Ive been sat scrolling through recipe videos on TikTok (( don't judge me)) and cant help but notice the amount of screechy hysteria in the comments section over ' unsesoned chicken'.

But to me it is seasoned, for example a normal roast chicken with salt and pepper rubbed into the skin.... Which is exactly what I do. I might rub some garlic butter under the skin and stick an onion or lemon up its backside but that's as good as it gets.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy peri peri chicken or whatever as much as anyone but it just doesnt always need it...... One poor woman was being mocked for not seasoning chicken in a heavy cream / garlic /cheesey potatoes dish. And again id argue it doesnt need it. The chicken should hold onto the other flavours.

My cack handed research has seen that most these comments seem to come from Americans..... Are there chickens less tasty? Or am I just Belinda from Blandtown?

So Yabu, and your food is shite and a waste of calories

Or yanbu. There's no need to empty the contents of your spice rack everytime you cook a damn chicken.

I thank you.

Salt and pepper is seasoning, decent meat/fish/veg doesn’t need a load of spice and flavourings on every outing. Doesn’t it get very samey? A lot of the premixed stuff is chuck full of sugar too.

VladmirsPoutine · 21/11/2021 20:35

@Slippy78

I also cut the fat and yucky bits off of the chicken that I don't want to eat But that's where the flavour comes from.
The flavour from your chicken comes from the slimey bits which you are hitherto aghast at washing off.

You see children, this is why you cannot just be eating at anyone's house!

Coffeepants · 21/11/2021 20:36

Exactly this! You’d rinse off an apple and wash lettuce before you ate it presumably. Also people saying salmonella all over your sink, I literally have bowls designated for the purpose of washing meat/chicken. Put in some water and vinegar/lemon. Cut off the gross bits, rinse and drain. It takes 2 mins to clean the sink with anti bac spray after…

Coffeepants · 21/11/2021 20:37

Ooh I’d love to try some Ghanian Jollof, sounds yum! Any good recipes?

videovixen · 21/11/2021 20:37

@Saysama Nigerians tend to LOVE spice so I'm not even surprised! I won't lie to you I'm such a wimp when it comes to spice😂 DP had a scotch bonnet the other day and I could have cried. I don't know how people can hack spice! When I go Nando's I get my chicken plain😂😂 don't judge me pls, everyone cusses me enough as it is!!

Hahaha no way, I prefer Nigerian Jollof you know (not too spicy ofc😂) and don't worry your secret is safe with me!

Honestly!! My grandma would be so concerned for my wellbeing bless her heart. We couldn't even try that as a prank, probs get disowned temporarily!

NFLBingo · 21/11/2021 20:38

I once had a manager who just ate chicken and rice for dinner and tea, it was so bizarre are the chicken was just that, so salt, pepper, spices, lemon, zilch! It made me so sad to see him eat his boiled rice and what looked like boiled chicken, I just wanted to take it away and chuck it in the bin. Grin

SmellyOldOwls · 21/11/2021 20:40

'Personally I'm horrified to hear that people DON'T wash their meat. You're eating an animal that you don't know where it's been. It could have dropped on the floor once going into the packet, anything could have happened but you're just gonna pick it up and throw it into the pan/oven because the temperature will kill the bacteria?
Sounds crazy to me!'

I don't think you can really get that uppity when you're eating a dead animal tbh! Sure fruit and veg is grown in all sort of old shite. Best not to think too much about it all.

videovixen · 21/11/2021 20:40

Soz I'm not a fan of the fat🤷🏾‍♀️ flavour or not.
And when I say yucky bits I just mean the bits that tend to have a bit of blood on it or those little white things that stick out.
Call me picky🤷🏾‍♀️

ThinWomansBrain · 21/11/2021 20:41

US chicken - is the seasoning to cover the taste of chlorine? Hmm

If it's a whole chicken, not that bothered - the seasoning will be on the skin, which I don't eat; I might bung a lemon inside if I have one handy. Fillets/cubes of chicken - yes, I season those.

Very true but I hope people wash their fruit and veg at the very least?? A quick rinse at least?!
(Sorry OP not tryna take over your thread)

Only if I'm not going to cook them. Otherwise there's no point.

blueberrybabe · 21/11/2021 20:49

yes Always . I season everything from rice to eggs to vegetables

Slippy78 · 21/11/2021 20:50

I'm not saying you have to eat the fat, just leave it in when cooking for the extra flavour.

CrowBones · 21/11/2021 20:50

@videovixen I know, I suddenly realised how small my world is!

Maybe because I don't get involved in much meat cooking, all this is eye opening for me. My husband used to be a chef though and people generally love his cooking - if he were cooking lamb, he'd rub it with salt, pepper, garlic, stud with rosemary. Is that actually insufficient?! 😂

I think maybe we need to expand our repertoire a bit, thanks for the inspiration!

videovixen · 21/11/2021 20:52

I'm scared to ask this question...

But to the people that don't wash their meat and/or fruit and veg. Does that mean you don't wash your rice either?

videovixen · 21/11/2021 20:52

Glad to know I'm not the only one who seasons my eggs!

Yes, but only to get rid of the excess starch so that it cooks better. Any filth will be sterilised during the cooking process so it's not a concern.
videovixen · 21/11/2021 20:54

@Slippy78 mm might try it next time to see if it makes any difference at all.

@CrowBones yeah that's so true! If you're a vegetarian all of this wouldn't bother you at all tbf. To me, that's not enough but loads of people do like their lamb lightly seasoned and if people love his cooking then he must be doing something right!
Haha anytime:)

I always wash fruit, veg and rice just never meat. They grow mushrooms in poo
FestiveMayo · 21/11/2021 20:56

or those little white things that stick out. what white bits? Bones?

Phew okay thought you were gonna say no then😂

FestiveMayo · 21/11/2021 20:57

Washing rice gets rid of the arsenic I thought?

videovixen · 21/11/2021 20:58

@FestiveMayo

Had no clue what it was called so had to go on Google lol. This is what I meant
AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 21/11/2021 21:04

Interesting conversation.

I distinguish between seasoning (salt and pepper) and spicing. As a general rule, I don't like spiced food though I am fine with spicy food (Nando's hottest is pretty bland).

If I'm eating roast chicken, all that I want is seasoning - a lemon and / or onion in the cavity is fine as I want to taste chicken, not spices. I find that poor quality meat needs lots of spices to compensate for the quality and that good quality meat just needs seasoning.

And before anyone lumps me in the 'British people like bland, boring food' group, I'm from forrin and have lived all over the world. I just prefer good quality, simple food.

We don’t use the same seasoning on everything (or even the same things). And I’ve never bought a premixed seasoning in my life.

Doesn’t salt and pepper get a bit samey?
