Ive been sat scrolling through recipe videos on TikTok (( don't judge me)) and cant help but notice the amount of screechy hysteria in the comments section over ' unsesoned chicken'.

But to me it is seasoned, for example a normal roast chicken with salt and pepper rubbed into the skin.... Which is exactly what I do. I might rub some garlic butter under the skin and stick an onion or lemon up its backside but that's as good as it gets.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy peri peri chicken or whatever as much as anyone but it just doesnt always need it...... One poor woman was being mocked for not seasoning chicken in a heavy cream / garlic /cheesey potatoes dish. And again id argue it doesnt need it. The chicken should hold onto the other flavours.

My cack handed research has seen that most these comments seem to come from Americans..... Are there chickens less tasty? Or am I just Belinda from Blandtown?

So Yabu, and your food is shite and a waste of calories

Or yanbu. There's no need to empty the contents of your spice rack everytime you cook a damn chicken.

I thank you.

There is a woman on TikTok who gets literally millions of views for videos of her cooking salmon and two veg, minimal seasoning. It's a bit baffling. I think it's the asmr quality of her videos that must be the draw.

Smother the bugger in English mustard, crumbled chicken Oxo and freshly ground salt.

ponkydonkey · 20/11/2021 22:33

I'm white British and I always season meat before I cook it

For a roast chicken I always sprinkle a little cumin, as well as oil salt and pepper
On a base of onion carrot and celery, how else would you get a good gravy?? 🤣

SmellyOldOwls · 20/11/2021 22:37

Throwing a load of dry powdery spices into everything you eat is unappealing to me!

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 20/11/2021 22:42

yabu. just start a more interesting thread if you are bored on a saturday night Grin.

Exactly

I only buy free range and season with salt and pepper and maybe herbs or lemon/onion inside, butter and sometimes a bit of thyme/tarragon on the outside. I get great gravy just from the chicken juices! I think we have better quality meat than the US.

How strange. Hmm

Most of the time I season my chicken, however there are times it isn't required for example if it's going in a creamy pasta sauce that's got shitloads of herbs and garlic in, and cheese and cream- all the good flavourful stuff, I'd just be overpowering the dish otherwise.
Salt, pepper and lemon is perfectly fine. Not too adventurous, but perfectly acceptable?

VladmirsPoutine · 20/11/2021 23:25

I guess for me it's cultural. Unseasoned chicken is frowned upon and I wouldn't make it for myself or others unseasoned. I'm not even that into cooking but seasoning chicken is a must. As is also washing it too.

kittenkipper · 20/11/2021 23:35

Washing chicken is unhygienic and many health campaigns have tried to send that message . Seasoning chicken is essential.

Bobsyer · 20/11/2021 23:46

Americans (in particular) have the sheer audacity to say brits serve up shit unseasoned food and then call dumping several tins of food and read made sauces into a dish and calling it a meal.

I’m only half kidding.

Tee20x · 20/11/2021 23:47

Washing chicken is only unhygienic if it splatters all around the sides and onto other surfaces etc etc. Most people I know simply put the meat in a bowl of water and lemon juice/vinegar and then pour off the water without having to splash it about round the place.

The amount of cloudy bits and bobs that come off the meat is horrid to look at and the thought of eating it without washing it makes me cringe. But again that's a cultural thing as others have said.

As for the seasoning issue. Again it's cultural - while salt and pepper are both technically seasonings, I personally wouldn't describe meat as seasoned if it just had salt and pepper on it and it would be bland to me.

Bobsyer · 20/11/2021 23:51

No one says the French cook shit food, and their meals are more similar to ours than the others quoted here. Simple flavours that work together can be all that’s needed - some meals only need salt and pepper. No one says that pasta aglio e olio is shit when that uses just garlic, parsley and Parmesan. Not everything requires a heavy battering of spices.

MrsToothyBitch · 20/11/2021 23:53

How else would you get a good gravy??

Use gravy salts. The only way to make nice gravy.

Depends what I'm cooking as to whether or not I season chicken and how strongly. I've never seasoned a Sunday roast- I like it with red cabbage and loads of gravy made with meat juice and gravy salts. Otherwise I do cook with some seasoning.

Appalonia · 20/11/2021 23:56

What are gravy salts please?

TheSmallAssassin · 20/11/2021 23:58

Just buy a decent chicken and it will just need salt and pepper and won't taste bland. Sheesh.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 21/11/2021 00:00

Off to Google gravy salts!

Coffeepants · 21/11/2021 00:00

Agree, cannot imagine the thought of putting something in my mouth that’s been unwashed. It’s very much the norm in my culture and no one I know would not wash it before cooking.

Coffeepants · 21/11/2021 00:01

Disagree. I come from a country that has far better quality of meat than the Uk and still the chicken needs to be seasoned. Salt and pepper won’t cut it. But appreciate that if you’ve not grown up eating food that way, it might taste perfectly good seasoned with salt and pepper.

claymodels · 21/11/2021 00:09

The idea that a chicken tastes bland without seasoning is alien to me. It tastes like a chicken. If you add salt/pepper/other stuff it tastes like chicken with salt/pepper/other stuff. I like mine just to taste of chicken.

CheeseMmmm · 21/11/2021 00:10

I just do salt and pepper.

Love the salty crispy skin!

I'm in the school of if you have good quality meat then simple is best. Same for everything really. Nice tasty fresh ingredients let the natural flavour... Um. I can only think 'shine'. That is so twattish sorry!

Note-
Yes I enjoy good which has more added in terms of herbs, spices, chilli, sauce etc.
Yes we get ready meals, takeaways, oven cook frozen stuff etc!

This isn't about right or wrong it's about upbringing, what you're used to, personal preference.

With a roast though the gravy surely is a source of additional flavour (seasoning) and any condiments? And they can be added individually to taste.

(I mash my roast spuds up in the gravy!).

I do accept that food here is bland to many from other cultures!

In fact there was a sketch about it I'll see if I can find it...

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 21/11/2021 00:14

Always stick salt & pepper on it but nothing else unless I am following a specific recipe.

CheeseMmmm · 21/11/2021 00:21

This is awesome.. Depending on age you may remember it!

Goodness gracious me- going out for an 'english- bland food Grin

All those who find food bland here this is a must watch- and everyone else cos just funny!
