They're annoyed I've taken a covid test!!

Ok so I started feeling a bit of a tickle in my throat last Sunday.
I had a PCR test Saturday and that came back negative.
I did a lateral flow test when I started feeling unwell and that was negative. I have done a few this week just to be "certain" it was just a cold. They've all come back negative.
Last night I put Vickes on and couldn't smell it. I got up this morning and tried all sorts and cannot smell a thing so I booked a PCR test.
DH says I should have just waited until I went back to work tomorrow and done it there (I'm tested weekly), but the way I see it is IF it is covid I'd be taking it in and spreading it around vulnerable people. He's also pissed that he has to have an operation next week and he's worried if it's positive that it may be cancelled. I've tried explaining to him that even if I didn't have the test today that I'd have to be tested tomorrow at work so the results would be the same. And neither test stops me having a cold now and I'm staying away from him as much as possible as it is so he doesn't catch it.

Then I phoned work.... They say it's probably the cold everyone else has. But as I've gone for a test I can't go back in until it comes back negative....but if it comes back during the day I'm to go in straight away as they're short staffed.

I just feel like everyone is pissed at me for following the rules and getting tested when I have covid symptoms....and no wonder people aren't getting tested and are spreading it around.

You absolutely did the right thing.

How can people still not know that for one of the three key symptoms, you do a pcr and isolate?!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 19/11/2021 12:05

I followed test and trace's advice and got a pcr when I was a close contact. I didnt need to isolate to do it but to get it done asap I told my headteacher boss that I was going to leave after the kids had gone home at a certain time. He came tonmy classroom specifically to tell me it was only a suggestion and I didnt need to get one done.

Not a clue why. I think he felt it was tempting fate? We lft anyway twice weekly. And it was my lft that picked up covid when did catch it when it was ripping through my classroom.

KrisAkabusi · 19/11/2021 12:13

Your husband is the only one actually pissed off at you. I think your work are being reasonable.

CreateAName123 · 19/11/2021 12:27

It was more the tone of voice of management, but yeah probably not as pissed as DH. And there nothing I can do now to go back and not catch this cold (my daughter had it a week or so ago...she did lft and was negative too) and if it turns out to be covid then I cannot change that either.
The only thing it does change is that I know for certain before going back to work and giving it to a bunch of vulnerable people.

We lft twice weekly and PCR once weekly. So hopefully it hasn't slipped through the net.

I think we’re all pissed off with pcr testing. I wouldn’t take it personally. I assume my boss’ heart sinks when I call to say one of my dc needs a pcr as I can’t go in until we get the negative.

Pumperthepumper · 19/11/2021 12:34

You’ve done the right thing, but everyone is pissed off with the tests. We had to wait three days for one before we could chase it, it was inconclusive so had to repeat, then another two days for a negative result. It’s nobody’s fault but it is a pain in the arse.

Mrsjayy · 19/11/2021 12:34

Ì think everyone is pissed off with testing you did nothing wrong though you tested for your own piece of mind. Everybody around you just needs to deal with their own pissed offness . Hopefully you will get a negative.

JurgensCakeBaby · 19/11/2021 12:35

It does seem overkill, in a week you've already had a PCR and have been regularly LFT all negative, your daughter had the same a week ago and was also negative. If your nose is blocked or sinuses swollen it can also affect smell

Fl0w3ry · 19/11/2021 12:40

I think you did the right thing. I think with covid people have reached breaking point with it so they have a bit of denial about it. We all want it to disappear, but it is here to stay and it relies on people like you responsibly testing to ensure it doesn’t become unmanageable again. Stuff others opinions. At least your conscience can be clear when you are working with vulnerable people.

Couchbettato · 19/11/2021 13:15

XH had covid symptoms and did a pcr test and it was negative. A week later still no better. Did another pcr test and it came back positive so I absolutely do not think it's overkill at all.

Repeat testing is the only way to be accurate.

PurpleDaisies · 19/11/2021 13:19

Agreed. I did a pcr as a contact. Negative. Negative lfts until suddenly positive with no classic covid symptoms a few days later.
Sparklybanana · 19/11/2021 13:21

The only sign I had was no sense of smell and the lateral flow came out strong positive at that point. You have to be sensible so you're doing the right thing. It's just very inconvenient if it doesn't affect you but I'd rather that inconvenience than kill someone by passing it on.

Tulipomania · 19/11/2021 13:28

You had a PCR test because you had a blocked nose?

I'm all for being careful but I think that's an over reaction.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/11/2021 13:28

You’ve definitely done the right thing

There seems to be a lot of this “getting pissed off with people for testing” about

PonderingTotskeit · 19/11/2021 13:37

You’ve definitely done the right thing. If you hadn’t and had given them Covid you’d be even more in the wrong.

I’m glad you’ve been sensible and I hope the cold is not too bad.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 19/11/2021 13:41

You only have to look at the awful spike in cases we had in the SW after the false negatives scandal to see how important it is to keep testing. Our areas are still well above the national average when cases are falling elsewhere, and our hospitals are under real pressure.

Keep on doing the right thing, OP.

LolaSmiles · 19/11/2021 13:43

You're doing the right thing.

Your work are reasonable in wanting you to go into work if your negative result comes back during the day though.

Cornettoninja · 19/11/2021 13:47

I think you’ve absolutely done the right thing especially if you work with vulnerable people and your DH is due an operation.

It’s horribly inconvenient and I think most people dread a positive result and the isolation and upheaval that goes with that but I think it’s really unfair of your DH to force you into the position of adult by being all pissy about it. It is what it is and there’s not much you can do about it.

If it is covid then you would have tested positive at work anyway and it’s just as likely to still affect his surgery. Getting in a humph with you is pointless.

I’d write off your bosses reaction as stress from having to manage staffing and wouldn’t take it personally. I’m sure they wouldn’t want an outbreak on their hands either if you questioned them.

Madworld26 · 19/11/2021 13:50

Did you miss the bit where she can’t smell anything, one of the three symptoms that requires a test?
Pinkchocolate · 19/11/2021 13:50

You have definitely done the right thing. I agree the situation is annoying but we can’t change that, we can stop spreading it though and the only way to do that is to test and isolate.

Cornettoninja · 19/11/2021 13:50

There really is and it’s starting to annoy me tbh. No one wants to throw their plans into chaos and when one person decides to get all bratty over it (despite in theory agreeing with measures - I’m not talking about those who completely reject measures like this) it takes away the space for the one trying to do the right thing to be annoyed at the inconvenience iyswim.

Whataday21 · 19/11/2021 13:54

You've done the right thing, as it's one of the main 3 symptoms. Why are they all drunk though?? Grin

WeAllHaveWings · 19/11/2021 14:01

Your dh is being a twat so ignore him. He is probably worried about his op next week and projecting.

Your work hopefully isn't annoyed at you taking the test, they are annoyed they are short staffed which is different and unavoidable. They would probably have been equally annoyed if you had called in sick for another reason.

Exhausteddog · 19/11/2021 14:02

I work in a work space where nearly everyone is SE. At least 6 people have had coughs, colds etc and none have had any time off work, I'm guessing they didn't test but if they did i doubt they isolated awaiting results. A couple are anti vaxxers and very blase about covid, but I imagine all of them are worried about taking 10 days of work without pay.

Itsjustrenee · 19/11/2021 14:10

You did the right thing. The only Covid symptom I had was a tickle in my throat. It was positive. Hope you’re feeling better soon.
