I really hate it when people do AIBU when it’s not really, but I’m at the end of my tether with them and need help!

My cat is always itchy as she has a skin condition but fleas just seem to be ongoing no matter what I do.

I do the vacuuming and throwing the bag out immediately. I treat her monthly with spot on from the vet, have got rid of all but 1 carpet (and the stairs). I’ve used bicarbonate of soda, flea powder, all sorts!

Please help - what worked for you?

Frontline works a treat.

LittleMissTeacup · 19/11/2021 15:04

Send the cat elsewhere for a few weeks - family or friend or friendly neighbour?
Then indorex - lots of indorex!

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 19/11/2021 15:08

Indorex.

pollypaula · 19/11/2021 15:25

Our 2 cats had terrible fleas. No amount of spot on helped. The vet gave me advantage and they were gone pretty much overnight. I also sprayed all the carpets.

PurpleNebula84 · 19/11/2021 15:43

What spot on are you using? Frontline's effectiveness is known to be reducing - I certainly found it didn't work on my cat. Don't use drops you can buy in the supermarket - they're crap.
I use Advantage drops and indorex spray for the house and never had a problem since. I buy them online from VetUk and they have quick delivery too.
I use a Seresto collar for my dog and it's brilliant - they do them for cats too, but I couldn't bring myself to fork out for one for the cat as he is known to lose collars.

Thankyou so much everyone!

Been to the vet and got bravecto and indorex. Now begins the war!

Indorex, flea drops, flea comb and flea flogger in combination.

The Indorex is a must.

AwkwardPaws27 · 19/11/2021 19:07

Indorex is fab but follow the directions closely.
For best results, hoover first, spray, and then hoover daily for a week. The vibrations and heat encourage the fleas to hatch so the stuff can more effectively kill them.

Willowkins · 19/11/2021 19:07

It's been a while but putting down shallow bowls of water with a drop of washing up liquid helped to get the last ones out of the carpets. The fleas literally jump in and drown.

Obviously don't let the cats in those rooms while it's working.

nancybotwinbloom · 19/11/2021 19:08

Monthly flea treatments and indoctex when I treat the pets.

The guy in Costco told me if you treat your pets and house st the same time each month the pets treatment kills the fleas and any that jump off the house treatment kills and vice Versa.

It's worked so far since we've had pets.

Two cats and a dog.

TheRealMrsMorningstar · 19/11/2021 19:13

RIP the house once every 12 months (slightly overdue this year). And bravecto (I think) three monthly on Moggy! Both bought from the vet.

Purplesunflowers · 19/11/2021 21:01

Another vote for Indorex! I was at my wits end last summer, so I empathise. Indorex works wonders x

Romemarie · 19/11/2021 21:37

Make a flea trap... shallow bowl water and a drop of washing up liquid... it truly works.
Put one in every room on the floor.

Laiste · 19/11/2021 21:41

Yes to Indorex and a prescription treatment from the vet used exactly as instructions say.

ALSO - when your cat is treated let it go into all the rooms of the house.

I know it feels counterintuitive when you are trying to rid a house of fleas, but the cat itself is a walking flea killer when freshly treated as any fleas which jump onto the cat and bite it will die.

ALSO - salt. Ordinary fine salt (cheap by the bag in supermarket). Where there's carpet sprinkle it around the edges of all the walls and up against the backs of the stair treads and around furniture legs. This is where flea eggs can lay dormant for months.

The odd one or two which you miss with the indorex could literally jump into life next spring and if it co-insides with your cats coming towards the end of their monthly treatment or you're a bit late - bang, you could be off again! But salt desiccates or dries up and kills flea eggs when in contact with them and is a non poisonous thing to leave down.

Pay for the council to come out and spray the house. We got two full house sprays for £80 a month apart. That and Johnson's spot on solved the problem. Indorex didn't touch it. The council used Ficam W but I think it's been taken off the market now, it even killed spiders. Can't hoover for weeks though. This even saved a shaggy rug and carpets that were infested.

DDivaStar · 19/11/2021 21:56

After we treated w
Ith chemicals we would use flea traps incase the odd one was missed.

Take a shallow plate or container (tuperware) put in some water and a couple of drops of washing up liquid mixed in. In the middle put a tealight (we use battery) on an upturned egg cup. Leavr in the dark room overnight. The fleas are attracted to the light but drown in the water.

Canunot · 19/11/2021 22:20

We had an infestation this summer and it took ages to get rid of.

We spent about £150 on various spot in and sprays for the house from supermarkets and pets at home and none of them worked.

We ended up getting a spot on and spray from the vet which was over £60 and combing our cat daily. Also hoovering daily.

LoveFall · 19/11/2021 22:53

Bravecto. Works on ticks also.

Kajjjer93 · 21/11/2021 10:04

The only thing that worked for us in the end was getting the pest control man out. Best £270 I ever spent.

I love my cats but the fleas were horrendous. I’m genuinely considering never getting anymore pets ever again.
