I really hate it when people do AIBU when it’s not really, but I’m at the end of my tether with them and need help!

My cat is always itchy as she has a skin condition but fleas just seem to be ongoing no matter what I do.

I do the vacuuming and throwing the bag out immediately. I treat her monthly with spot on from the vet, have got rid of all but 1 carpet (and the stairs). I’ve used bicarbonate of soda, flea powder, all sorts!

Please help - what worked for you?

Advantage spot-on treatment. Have found that fleas seem to be immune to others like Frontline. Also, another shout for Indorex spray. Great stuff!

SapphireEyes88 · 19/11/2021 13:28

I had this some years ago when a (human) visitor brought fleas in. Unfortunately I had to resort to a bug bomb and take myself and cat to a friends place whilst doing it.
I now have 4 cats, a dog and 5 reptiles so bombing would be impossible! For the cats I use the flea collars from poundland as herbal and supplement with advocate about every 3 months. They are outdoor cats who hunt and eat goodness knows what but never a flea in sight! I hope you can get it under control, f.eas are a total nightmare!

HoseMeDownWithHolyWater · 19/11/2021 13:29

Prescription flea medicine from the vet.

We were spending £40 a month a pipettes, foggers and collars for two cats. Nothing worked. Then we spoke to the vet who said they stuff you can buy off the shelf stopped being effective a few years ago so we are wasting our money.

I've not even seen a single flea in about two years now. It's about £10 a month.

WellLarDeDar · 19/11/2021 13:31

Wash everything on a hot cycle, spray everything with Indorex spray every few days - like everything, carpet, skirting boards, bed, pet bed, sofa, everything! Every pet gets a flea bath with the appropriate pet shampoo then use frontline plus once a week for a month. And spray more Indorex everywhere. My friend brought her flea bitten dogs to my house who infested my dogs and cats and I had the worst infestation I'd ever know, we woke up and could see the fleas crawling on the bedsheets it was horrific! I ended up sleeping in on the sofa wrapped in some ancient mattress cover that had lived in the airing cupboard all it's life. I was so mad at her, she openly admitted it afterwards as well! Indorex was the only thing that worked for us.

AramintaLee · 19/11/2021 13:32

Another vote for Indorex. I always make sure I'm stocked up. It's expensive but it really works.

Spot on never works for my cats so the vet gave me tablets to use on my kitten. He has to take them once a month and apparently they taste like Dreamies (how the vet would know this, I don't know... but to be fair, my kitten does just eat them like a treat) They're called Credelio.

idontlikealdi · 19/11/2021 13:32

Depends where are you are to what treatment will be best. The fuckers are resistant to different treatments in different areas and it's getting worse. My dog now has a tablet not a spot on.

Fl0w3ry · 19/11/2021 13:39

I steam cleaned all soft furnishings and floors (nothing was damaged by the steam cleaning) every night. And used flea powders and flea sprays in the day. When the cat was in the house I had him sleep in a crate (this was the ONLY period of time he used the crate and happily slept in it in the kitchen with his litter tray, bed and water, before I get trolled!) where there were less soft surfaces for the fleas and treated him with spot-on treatments. I also washed all of his bedding at 90 degrees. I didn’t allow him to roam the house until we stopped being bit by fleas and stopped seeing them for a few days.

CSIblonde · 19/11/2021 13:43

Indorex. Dont forget to spray under beds, spray all furniture & where walls meet floor & any cracks & between & under appliances . Monthly Advantage for cat.

Cherrysoup · 19/11/2021 13:47

Bravecto kills fleas that bite the animal, so breaking the cycle. Spray individual rooms with RIP Fleas/Indorex, including along skirting boards/soft furnishings, close room, hoover, repeat. Took me forever to get rid last year.

qwerty222 · 19/11/2021 13:48

Giving him a bath really helped as well as regular brushing, spot on and spraying furniture

Indecisivelurcher · 19/11/2021 13:49

Indorex spray for the house, wash everything you can, vacuum everything else daily and respray a week later. And serresto collars for the pets. Much better than spot on and last 8 months.

Mrbay · 19/11/2021 13:49

Once I got rid of the little nasties, I stopped fleeing my animals monthly, not had fleas in months/years!

Indecisivelurcher · 19/11/2021 13:50

Threw out all the pet beds too.

Justcallmebebes · 19/11/2021 13:51

Also, put a flea collar in drum/bag of your vacuum cleaner otherwise they hide in tubing etc and just crawl out again. Collar kills them when they're hoovered up

SherryJane · 19/11/2021 13:51

Talk to your vet. We used to use frontline but the fleas became immune. We use maxiclear now and that works well.
If the carpet is infested you may need a pest control person to sort you out.

Happynow · 19/11/2021 13:54

Another vote for Indorex!

Theluggage15 · 19/11/2021 13:55

Another vote for Bravecto and Indorex spray.

Pixiedust1234 · 19/11/2021 13:56

Indorex for me too. Make sure you spray around skirting boards and any small cracks. Do the sides of stair carpets thoroughly. Spray under furniture such as sofas and wardrobes. Follow the instructions carefully. Also ask the vet for a different spot on, some fleas have become resistant to certain ones. Wash all fabrics(bedding, cushion covers, pet blankets) at 40 degrees minimum. I have never had to throw any bedding out (human or pet) doing the above. Good luck!

IGotHam · 19/11/2021 14:03

Another one saying Indorex! Magic stuff, you have to hoover really thoroughly first and then spray everywhere. I hot washed bedding that the cat had sat on. Get proper flea treatment from the vet, loads don't seem to work.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 19/11/2021 14:06

Coconut oil works on my dogs. Spoonful in their food every day. Haven't had a flea in years and we don't use any other flea deterrents or treatments.

You'd have to check if its safe for cats though.

Flump9 · 19/11/2021 14:08

Stronghold spot on for definite. I've always found it kills ones in the house as well as on the cat cos they will bite the cat at some point. I get bitten to death when there are fleas around so I know it works.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 19/11/2021 14:15

Massive flea infestation in our house this summer 5 cats. Cat3 has dermatitis and allergic to flea saliva.

Used spot on monthly, Beaphar or frontline. Changed cat food to royal canine skin and hair to help cat3 grow her fur back. Put 4 low tubs of warm water with washing up liquid around house for months. The fleas sense the warmth, jump in and drown. This was a life saver. We had one in bathroom, one in kitchen, one in lounge under radiator and another under a desk. Anywhere where if you stood long enough and the bastards jumped on your legs. It massively helped.

Hoovered once then again like 30 minutes later. Into all cracks. Put all bedding, blankets and cushion cases on hot washes.

Used a flea spray on surfaces after the first hoover.

Frymetothemoon · 19/11/2021 14:16

You're killing them on the cat, but the house is recontaminating the cat (eggs hatching in the carpet, etc).

So de-flea the cat and treat the house simultaneously with a fogger. You'll need to leave the house for a few hours but it's really effective.

Then, as long as you keep your flea treatments for the cat up to date, it should be the end of it

DerektheGoose · 19/11/2021 14:23

Indorex and flea traps available on Amazon worked a treat for us a couple of years ago. No fleas since and all 3 cats regularly go outside.

CommonDen · 19/11/2021 14:24

You've got to combine the treatments with combing - whenever you notice flea f
dirt or round tiny eggs. You can buy them for 99p online. Little dinky things. Mine haven't had fleas for years - apart from one occasion where I just did a thorough comb straight away along with the spot on treatments (then every 3 months, bought from vets).
