To think this is dangerous?

Guy I know on SM and his wife are into extreme sports. They have a 6 month old baby.

They post a lot of content of them doing said sports and are keen to get the baby involved. Recent posts have included throwing the baby 6ft up in the air on a beach and riding a skateboard in a half pipe with the baby in his arms.

Aibu to think this is a bit risky?

Obviously none of my business really I'm just curious to see people's opinions!

Seems unnecessarily risky to me, especially if they are only doing it to create images for social media. Let social services know, forward them copies of the offending images, that way they can decide whether the parents are being dangerously irresponsible or not.

girlmom21 · 18/11/2021 11:08

Surely throwing a baby 6ft in the air is abusive/neglectful. You don't throw babies ffs.

SleighBells21 · 18/11/2021 11:09

Yeah that would make me feel very uneasy tbh.

Thecathouse · 18/11/2021 11:10

I was expecting you to say they were into mountain hiking and scrambling and were taking baby in sling (perfectly fine) but what they are doing is downright dangerous, the adult should be wearing a helmet, baby can't wear a helmet so shouldn't be doing it, simple as, a fall on babies head could very well kill it.

I too would be getting on to social services, it's ridiculous behaviour

Bunce1 · 18/11/2021 11:11

Yeah the throwing sounds off. Shaken baby syndrome?

They sound like they are including the baby for the “likes” which is shady AF

FOJN · 18/11/2021 11:13

A bit risky?

Absolutely reckless IMO.

shouldistop · 18/11/2021 11:16

Are you sure the photos aren't photoshopped to get people frothing about it?

WheelieBinPrincess · 18/11/2021 11:18

Oh no it’s fine. The baby probably loves it. They really enjoy a bit of risk taking at that age and it’s great for the development. Can’t wait to take mine for his first surfing lesson at six months, and we have a sky dive booked in for his first birthday.

troobleflooble · 18/11/2021 11:27

@shouldistop these ones were videos so although it's possible I think unlikely. I think they also knew there might be people unhappy about it because they put a comment in the title about the baby enjoying it so it's ok. The dad was actually standing on rocks covered in seaweed so to my mind a lot of potential to slip and fall. Really dangerous.

charabanctrip · 18/11/2021 11:31

Of course it's risky, but people are also stupid and don't think it'll ever happen to them or their offspring. Until it's too late.

Theyellowflamingo · 18/11/2021 11:37

If I said I took my baby unsecured in a car but it’s ok they liked it, I’d be prosecuted. Ditto if I took them to go play chicken on the motorway or said they could stick things in sockets because they thought their hair standing on end was hilarious. I’d say throwing a baby that high or stunt skateboarding holding a baby is equally risky and I’d probably alert social services. One tiny mistake and fall and that baby could be dead or severely disabled for life.

HyacynthBucket · 18/11/2021 11:40

Of course its your business OP, its all ofour business if we see a child put at risk or mistreated. Contact social services. They can't expose the child to risks just because they enjoy taking risks.

Platax · 18/11/2021 11:48

Was the baby wearing the same sort of protective clothing for skateboarding as his/her father? if not, it really is spectacularly hypocritical.

And yes, I'd be concerned about potential brain damage in throwing the baby high up into the air and catching them. I'd have thought there's a serious risk when the child's body stops moving downwards but the brain carries on and hits the skull, especially if the father only catches the baby via their body rather than their head.

FangsForTheMemory · 18/11/2021 11:50

I don't know why you're asking randoms on here instead of reporting them to social services.

troobleflooble · 18/11/2021 11:54

@Platax the dad was not wearing any protective stuff so in that sense the baby was wearing the same - obviously that's still not good!

I am concerned that they feel this is ok but having had my own horrific experience with SS I am a bit reluctant to report unless it seems that they genuinely don't care for the baby's safety. Also I don't know anything about these people other than their names.

OP posts:
HelplesslyHoping · 18/11/2021 11:59

People have contacted SS about concerns of celebrity/youtuber/instagrammers kids, it happens. I'm not sure how the reporting process works with people you don't know but I'd be looking into it. If there's nothing wrong, no harm will be done.

lisophil · 18/11/2021 12:01

This is shocking the risks are countless

Suspiciousmind20 · 18/11/2021 12:05

I would feel a responsibility to report this.

TeaWithTwoCubes2 · 18/11/2021 12:08

Please report them anonymously to your local children's Social care. If an adult wants to risk their own lives and they have the capacity to do so then fine. But this sounds like they are putting the welfare of this child at risk. Report anonymously. They need a talk on children's rights namely the right to be safe.

Sparklfairy · 18/11/2021 12:11

Its attention seeking. The next step will be the baby gets hurt or worse and a gofundme gets started. Its disgusting and I would report.

BrunoJenkins · 18/11/2021 12:13

throwing the baby 6ft up in the air

Do you mean the baby was 6ft from the ground (so at the height of the parent))? Or thrown 6ft above his head (so 12ft above the ground)?

Very different scenarios.

riding a skateboard in a half pipe with the baby in his arms

If he's an experienced skateboarder then I can see how the risk of this could be comparable to eg. running for a bus while holding a baby.

Or was the baby in a carrier? If so then I wouldn't be very concerned at all.

Ileflottante · 18/11/2021 12:16

I’m as casual a parent as they come and even I think dropping into a half pipe carrying a six month old is shit, attention-seeking ‘parenting’.

DrManhattan · 18/11/2021 12:16

They just sound like massive dickheads

SnoopsCaliforniaRoll · 18/11/2021 12:50

Definitely attention seeking, and probably with the aim to cultivate their own little celebrity adrenaline junkie (like a baby Sky Brown!).

Aprilx · 18/11/2021 12:56

How do you throw a baby six feet in the air? 😳
