To want to pay cleaner by bank transfer not cash.

360 replies

Starryskiesinthesky · 18/11/2021 07:41

Cleaner wants paid in cash but I never have cash so would prefer to pay by bank transfer. Fact she wants cash makes me think she’s not declaring it. What do others do and do you care if they are not declaring it? £15 per hour if it makes a difference. Thanks.

We take out a couple of hundred at a time and keep it in the car - cash is sometimes handy to have. You don't need to take out cash every week, just every couple of months. Not a big deal, surely?

Completely not the point but you keep a couple of hundred quid in the car? Confused
It definitely wouldn't be there very long where I live!
People seem to get into peoples cars (on their drive) on a regular basis here.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 18/11/2021 08:42

We pay in cash - have for 10+ years not too challenging.

SunShinesBrightly · 18/11/2021 08:42

@icedcoffees

One issue with bank transfer is having to chase people who forget to actually pay you Hmm

Bank transfer is fine if the client pays beforehand or on the day but it gets really tiresome having to chase people to pay you - it's almost demeaning, actually.

I suspect she's had bad experiences with people not paying so it's easier to insist on cash upfront, that way she can't be messed around.

This is also a real possibility! People forget to transfer the money. I owe our window cleaner for 3 visits. This thread has reminded me to pay up.
anon12345678901 · 18/11/2021 08:42

I would do a bank transfer but I rarely carry cash and wouldn't make a special trip just for it. If you don't want to pay cash then say, and if she won't accept bank transfer, look for someone else. I prefer to do all things through the bank when possible so there's a trail.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 18/11/2021 08:44

For £15 she is cleaning up your dead skin cells and other crap, so pay her how she wants!

theleafandnotthetree · 18/11/2021 08:48

@LadyCampanulaTottington

We pay our cleaner in cash. We go to the bank once a month to get her month's pay and change notes to coins so that we have everything ready.

It's not that hard.

I guess it is if you have the attitude to some on here, God forbid you might put yourself out to faciliate paying someone. I mean sge's just a cleaner right, interchangeable, bit like a household appliance. Also, do people really live in a totally cashless way? Multiple times per week I use cash - to give the kids a few quid to go to the shop, to bring into school for something or other, to pay for activities for them.....
Hoppinggreen · 18/11/2021 08:49

Depends whether you want to keep her happy
I have had some awful cleaners so didn’t have one for a long time. I have just got a new one recommended by a friend and she’s great so I will pay her however she prefers, which is cash. Bank transfer would be easier for me but I want to keep her happy so I pay cash
He tax arrangements are none of my business

Offmyfence · 18/11/2021 08:50

@Starryskiesinthesky

You are all right that the 2 issues are unrelated.

For me it is the faff of getting cash that is the problem.

I get what folk have said about overdrafts and it getting swallowed up tho so will see if I can be more organised and have cash ready.

I have already used up my sons savings ton with £330 in it! I will pay him it back tho (he is 18 so will make sure I do!).

Thanks 😊

How is it a faff getting cash out, so many places have cash points and cash back facilities.

Her relationship with HMRC are no concern of yours.

FrDamo · 18/11/2021 08:51

Over the years we started by paying our cleaner in cash, this moved onto cheque and finally bank transfer as her bank stopped taking cheques. I don't remember why we went from cash to cheque but I preferred cheque as I found getting the cash a faff and worse when you needed coins as well because it wasn't a round number.

Needless to say this was all my mental load to take care of.

TractorAndHeadphones · 18/11/2021 08:51

@QuiteQuaint

Except it is if you are never near one.

Never? You don’t go to the supermarket? Don’t ever go near a bank? A petrol station?

I guess you’ll have to find a new cleaner if they only want cash and you really don’t go to any of those places. Unless you don’t leave the house, it’s hard to believe though.

And if that’s the issue, why bring up the declaring it issue?

I don’t do any of those things - we get everything delivered 😂 the only time I go out is for drinks etc and I’m not walking around the town centre with loads of cash then for someone to steal! Nearest cash point is 10 mins drive 40 mins by public transport and we don’t have a car yet…
NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 18/11/2021 08:53

I wouldn't care about the declaring it/not aspect, but it is a faff - I used to pay a childminder in cash and it was inconvenient (especially as the weekly total ended in £5, so usually also involved having to go into a shop afterwards to break a £10). Wasn't a big enough problem to be a deal-breaker (my threshold here would be lower for a cleaner than a cm though), but I'm a bit Hmm at the 'is it really such a big deal' posts. Given 'get a cleaner' is so often proffered as a MN solution to mothers who are utterly overwhelmed, I imagine quite a lot of cleaner-employers absolutely are people for whom every bloody minute counts. (I don't have time or money, so I just have a messier home than I'd like!)

Your circumstances are not common but you’d just have to accept this cleaner wasn’t for you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

TractorAndHeadphones · 18/11/2021 08:53

Also why can’t people transfer money on the spot? Takes me 30 seconds to open my app and transfer the money while she’s cleaning 😎

KurtWilde · 18/11/2021 08:57

Absolutely this. You might not want the 'faff' of having to draw money out every few weeks to pay her, she probably doesn't want the 'faff' of having to chase clients for money she earned.

And instead of jumping to tax avoidance ( and someone mentioned money laundering Confused) maybe consider she's overdrawn and wants some control over her income rather than it getting eating up instantly by the bank. Low income, normal people stuff.

saleorbouy · 18/11/2021 08:57

Are there no local businesses that do cash back, the pub, local shop or garage?
If not just take out enough cash at the start of the month to pay her.
We have a jar of cash to pay for this type of thing and school and after school activities that just fits topped up when we're near an ATM.
Could she set up a Revolute or similar for you to transfer to. She could use it in the shops the same as cash...

How do you know that my circumstances are not common? Most of my friends do the same. A lot of cash machines have also been closed as pp have mentioned.

So contrary to what people are saying it is a big deal. If you’re lucky enough to have easy access to plenty of cash machines while you’re living your life great, but that’s not the case for everybody.

@LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus

£15 per hour, not £15 per session

OP, YABU. I'm similar in that I never have cash. Its a pain. But you need to go with her wishes or find someone else

Oftenithinkaboutit · 18/11/2021 08:59

I pay cash
Doesn’t suit me but…. I try to accommodate where I can

Do you never go in to a town? Surely take out cash then

JustLyra · 18/11/2021 09:00

Our cleaner only accepts cash because of the number of people who forget to pay her, or who think it’s ok to pay in a day or two because they were busy.

Good cleaners are hard to find so he can set his terms how he wants because he knows he’ll easily fill a slot if someone can’t be arsed being organised.

Why can’t people transfer the cash while he’s cleaning? It takes the same amount of time to transfer money with banking apps as it does waiting for someone to dig out cash
nordica · 18/11/2021 09:03

I wouldn't like having to pay in cash either because I hate using the local cash points - there's regular tampering going on so it never feels safe to use my card there and trust it won't get cloned. The nearest branch of my own bank is really far as well and out of my way (I don't drive so it would mean a train or bus journey specifically).

RobinPenguins · 18/11/2021 09:05

I do bank transfer, cash is a faff.

Starryskiesinthesky · 18/11/2021 09:05

I have decided having a cleaner is more hassle than it’s worth so I am going to go back to doing my own!

lobsteroll · 18/11/2021 09:06

Just go once a month to the cash point and get out what you'll need for the month. Once you get into the routine it's fine.

And I agree, I couldn't care less if my cleaner doesn't declare it. I'd rather Amazon paid their taxes than my lovely cleaner.

happinesscherries · 18/11/2021 09:06
  1. you can get cashback in most supermarkets, so don't bullshit
  2. she doesn't even need to declare it if it's under £1k.

You're not her accountant. Stop being judgey.
