AIBU to think being desperate to smoke & vape is a bit sad?

I mean the numerous bus drivers and tram drivers who can't wait to get off and light up in all weathers, dragging them out of their pockets while walking off the vehicle. People hanging around in the rain huddled about puffing away. I feel sorry for anyone as addicted as that and think it looks sad.

Oooh, no. It's wonderful to have a smoke when you've been desperate for one for a while. Like any other similar pleasure - a drink of cold water when you're parched on a hot day; your favourite food when you haven't eaten all day - only with added tingliness and loveliness, like an orgasm afterglow.

Don't feel sorry for people who are enjoying themselves.

Agree 100%

@ClawedButler

But what you are seeing is the strength and power of addiction. The 4Cs of addiction are: Compulsion - an overpowering urge to partake in the addiction Craving - a physical sensation when withdrawn from the addiction Consequences - persisting with the addiction even when there are negative consequences Control - losing the ability to control when/if you partake in the addiction

If you've never suffered with any sort of addiction, then marvellous, lucky you. But they're not doing it because they're pathetic.

The reasons you've listed are exactly why I quit. I didn't want to be addicted to smoking anymore. It's absolutely filthy.

@Jarnss

I mean if we are going to throw insults, then I feel sorry for fat people buying food, how sad they eat theirselves into ill health.

As for Vaper's being better, I don't think it's been around long enough to say that. I know when I'm behind someone who is sucking on a vape my chest goes tight and yes it stinks.

As for it not costing society, that has yet to be seen. You can't really think you can inhale crap and not have your lungs suffer.

I knew a woman who only ever smoked weed, without tobacco. She got lung cancer in her late 40s, had half her lung removed.

People kid theirselves all the time over their habits. Does not matter if it's cigs, vapes, food or drink.

Vaping is also used to replace cigs. It's not giving up really is it. Again people kidding themselves. The sheer amount of vape 'smoke' from one drag is ridiculous.

The NHS say vaping is 95% better for health than smoking. For those who would really struggle to go from cigarettes to nothing (lots of people in psych hospitals or with serious mental illness in the community) vaping is an excellent alternative to continuing smoking.

Are you serious? 🤣

Nicotine is not a legitimate need like water

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 17/11/2021 17:54

@MrsTerryPratchett

People vape because they are giving up, or have given up smoking cigarettes.

Unfortunately this isn't true. Primary addictions to vaping with no prior smoking are pretty common, especially in young people. And there are health implications to vaping as well.

Yes. There are two entirely separate strands to vaping.

Smoking cessation. It has lots of benefits, less harmful to health, being cheaper, etc. For this it should be accpeted instead of all the often ludicrous "but it smells" complaints. It doesn't smell as much as smoking does and often not as much as the perfume of the complainer - which might share some of the components of the vape juice

A first step. Needs to be more controlled, more information available at source for those beginning their vaping.

Currently the government is asking for any vape manufacturer to submit information about its medical apporopriateness with a view to its being part of the NHS Smoking Cessation programme - available on prescription. This won't happen because it costs a fortune to get that certification and manufacturers won't pay to explore the realities of the products. Why would they?

boaronthefloar · 17/11/2021 17:56

I had smokers staying with us last weekend. Pisses me right off that first thing in the morning the back door is opened which lets in a massive draft, and then the inevitable stench starts. Then they walk back in the room and stink that out too.

Worst habit

EmeraldShamrock · 17/11/2021 17:56

Check out ZYN sales, nicotine addiction is very much profitable with teenagers even if smoking is outdated.
Lots of teenagers vaping too.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 17/11/2021 17:58

Nicotine is not a legitimate need like water

Where did I say it was a legitimate need? The word I used was pleasure.

It shouldn't be news that smoking is pleasurable - why do you think people do it?

UndertheCedartree · 17/11/2021 18:01
@Jarnss it has been. I started vaping in 2013 when I first tried to quit
It's 95% safer than smoking and should be treated differently as the guidance says. There are numerous studies on it

Yes I'm vocal about it! People who smoke will start vaping and get "it's just as bad. It stinks. May as well smoke" and they think fuck it, I might as well go back to smoking. Harming themselves AND others around them
When they could vape which is so so much safer for everyone, anti smokers NEED to support it or you push people back to smoking

"Local authorities should continue to fund and provide stop smoking services and all stop smoking services should have a consistent approach to using vaping products"

"There is no published scientific evidence of harm to bystanders from exposure to e- cigarette vapour and the available evidence indicates that any risk of harm is extremely low, especially when compared with tobacco smoke"

"Finally, if e-cigarettes are to do their job of making smoking less of a social norm, they must be clearly positioned as products that help adult smokers to quit. In this way, vaping becomes synomyous with the rejection of smoking"
Completely agree! And yes, I'm vocal about it too. I ran a smoking cessation group at my psych hospital and vaping is such a help. But yes it needs to be seen as what it is 95% healthier than cigarettes, with vape that dissipates quickly into the air. It is an achievement for someone to move from cigarette smoking to vaping. If they are still treated as a pariah, told it is like still smoking and bad for their health then it will not seem worth making the switch. And if we do that we are having such a detrimental effect on many vulnerable people.

@iwouldcastrateyouandmarryyou - it feels as essential as water when you are burning for a smoke.

The majority of cigarettes people smoke are not enjoyable. They're just satisfying their addiction.

Sad!

Satisfying an addiction is by definition enjoyable - otherwise you wouldn't feel the desire to do it, and the pleasure when it's done.

EvenRosesHaveThorns · 17/11/2021 18:13

Aren't you condescending. Nicotine is a very powerful, addictive drug that is amazingly still legalised and was very seductively advertised in recent years in living memory. I have seen people around me struggle with it since childhood. No one 'wants' to smoke, but it is incredibly difficult to stop and no need to sneer at them.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 17/11/2021 18:16

I do. I enjoy it very much.

Loads of people quit. It can be done.
UltimateBugKilla · 17/11/2021 18:32

Never experienced addiction have you!!

ParkheadParadise · 17/11/2021 18:33

I'm a non-smoker now BUT
the first fag in the morning and the one after my dinner at night were the best ever
I still miss smoking sometimes.

boaronthefloar · 17/11/2021 18:35

@UltimateBugKilla

Never experienced addiction have you!!
Yes, I smoked from age 16ish to 26ish. I'm 35 now
boaronthefloar · 17/11/2021 18:36

I will concede that smoking while downing pints on a warm summer's day is in fact enjoyable.

The 6:30am fags in the snow - less so

FlickerBeat · 17/11/2021 18:38

I suppose they don't really care about your fake pity.

WorraLiberty · 17/11/2021 18:39

What a strange thread to start and not bother returning to Confused

"I feel sorry for addicts"

Errrr yeah, lots of us do.

EmeraldShamrock · 17/11/2021 18:40

I do. I enjoy it very much.
An old friend enjoys heroin very much she'll sell her body, her DC are in care, but she enjoys heroin too much.
It's her first thought in the morning, plunging the needle is euphoric.
Crazy she claims to love the feeling.
Alcoholics love Alcohol.
You're addicted.

I've never tried heroin, so I can't comment on what it feels like.

No interest in heroin as -

A. heroin is illegal and I'm a law-abiding type; b. heroin is much more expensive than tobacco. It only costs me about £20 a week to smoke (I roll my own). And C. No one ever dropped dead from an accidental tobacco overdose or smoking an impure cigarette.

If I want to enjoy my perfectly legal addiction, then I shall.

OhGiveUp · 17/11/2021 18:55

I don't think they care one way or the other about your emotions OP.
I don't smoke and never have but if someone else wants to, it's up to them, I don't care one way or the other.
