Gym studio heating

A trivial AIBU, but as it’s happened at least once a week, for 5 years and came to a bit of a head this week, I thought I’d ask.

I go to a gym and do classes regularly there. There is a lady (let’s call her Pat), who also does classes. Pat will get there early and will turn the air con off and put the heating on. Pat feels the cold. For context Pat is in her 70s, so may feel it more. The age range of the classes is generally all ages though. Then the rest of us arrive and it’s warm, within 5 mins of exercise it’s horrible. We generally grin and bear this as Pat feels the cold. She does wear 3/4 leggings and 3/4 length top whilst the majority wear shorts and vest so is trying a little to insulate herself. It came to a head this week when a new instructor arrived and a couple of newer people also and were incredulous. Air con was cranked up, doors were opened. Pat was cold. At the end of the class many apologised to Pat and Pat was tearful as she was cold, won’t come to the classes if it’s like that. All very awkward.

What do you think?
YABU - Pat should have the monopoly on heating.
YANBU - The majority should rule and Pat should wear more layers.

Exercising in the heat is awful and can make you ill. I'd go with the option of no heating and if anyone is cold they can add more layers.

dementedpixie · 16/11/2021 15:34

It's horrible working out when it's hot and you can barely breathe.

A compromise maybe - somewhere in between hot and cold

Pizzapizzaz · 16/11/2021 15:51

I hate the heat also, I’ve kind of given up though! We have attempted compromise in the past, this is heating on and windows open Confused. Crazy.

If you're already in shorts and vests, you can't take more clothes off to get cooler. Okay she's in 3/4 lengths but she could put another layer on.

amusedbush · 16/11/2021 16:00

I'm struggling to see how anyone could be cold enough that it makes them cry while exercising! Surely exercise classes get your blood pumping and make you sweat?

I think Pat needs to buy a jumper and people should stop pandering to her.

Thehop · 16/11/2021 16:03

Pat is v unreasonable

LaurieFairyCake · 16/11/2021 16:04

Pats a twat

It should be cool to exercise, cool enough that you don't feel awful the second you get warm - maybe 16/17 degrees ?

Stellaris22 · 16/11/2021 16:05

Buy a jumper if she’s cold.

I hate it when it’s too hot in the gym. I like to do 3-5km on the treadmill before strength training. I struggle to do 1km when it’s too warm as I get dizzy and feel physically nauseous.

If you’re cold in the gym you clearly aren’t moving enough. Even when I’m doing weights I get warm quickly.

Starcaller · 16/11/2021 16:06

Pat is being a knob and then turning on the waterworks when people point it out. No one wants to exercise with the heating on. If she's cold, tell her to exercise harder Grin

mynameiscalypso · 16/11/2021 16:09

Aren't we supposed to ventilate everything these days because of Covid?

Stellaris22 · 16/11/2021 16:09

Are gym users allowed to change the heating and air con? If anyone did that at my gym they’d risk getting their membership cancelled, staff should be more on top of that and not letting anyone mess with the heating.

MintyGreenDream · 16/11/2021 16:11

I need the treadmill fan turned on when I'm in the gym and I'm a newbie! The thought of doing a class with heating on makes me feel nauseous just thinking about it.

Shortpoet · 16/11/2021 16:28

Pat should invest in a warm tracksuit with some thermal base layers underneath. Clearly 3/4 top snd leggings aren’t enough for her.

Pizzapizzaz · 16/11/2021 16:28

There are signs plastered everywhere saying not to adjust air con / heating. Pat ignores this and by getting there early the damage is done as it takes the heating so long to cool down again! Sometimes if windows have been opened she will go round mid class and close them, the instructor can’t stop her without halting the class and causing a drama.

Many years ago I suggested that Pat should work harder to warm up, she hasn’t spoken to me since 😂. She has been there since day dot, and the gym staff seem scared of her. She appears very frail which I think puts people off (me included) challenging her.

doadeer · 16/11/2021 16:31

Pat shouldn't be able to touch the settings.

If she is cold she wears an extra layer it's pretty obvious and selfish of her.

Stellaris22 · 16/11/2021 16:34

How secure is entry to the gym? Could they suspend her membership to stop her entering? I think other members need to start speaking up, it’s not healthy working out in that much heat. If people are getting dizzy from heat it’s not safe, especially for classes using weights.

Aquamarine1029 · 16/11/2021 16:36

Pat needs to find a new gym. Pat needs to be told the world doesn't revolve around Pat.

imnottoofussed · 16/11/2021 16:47

Pat is definitely in the wrong. The heating should not be on at all. Within about 30 seconds of working out the body should heat up anyway. I usually have a fan pointing straight at me when I'm working out at home, alongside having no heating on and sometimes the back door open.

KitchenFishCurry · 16/11/2021 16:57

I have raynard's disease my hands go numb if I get cold and it doesn't really need to be that cold for it to happen, air con at the gym is awful for me. Pre Covid when I went to classes I knew the best spot in each room to be furthest away from the air con blowers and I had plenty of layers on because it could easily take half an hour for me to warm up, however I didn't make a fuss or expect the heating to be on or the air con off. Now I'm that little bit older I go from freezing to nuclear reactor in about 5 minutes I still layer up its easy enough to remove anything.

Snoozer11 · 16/11/2021 17:16

There was a brief time when the air con in my gym broke.

The gym is huge and light and airy with high ceilings. It was during the summer months but the weather wasn't great, and they bought massive fans to try and compensate.

But my god, the heat was unbearable. I just do my own thing when I get there but after 5 minutes of weight training I'd be dripping in sweat and want to give up.

I can't imagine how awful it would be to have artificial heat in that setting. And to have a class on top of that?! I'm genuinely surprised anyone else goes when Pat is there.

Arsewangry · 16/11/2021 18:47

Can Pat not layer up a bit more if she's cold? A micro fleece and thick joggers / leg warmers ought to do the trick.

Pat is being daft!

I went to a class years ago and a fellow classee felt the cold, she spent the entire first 15 minutes of every class in one of those huge padded 3/4 length jackets Grin

Chenga · 16/11/2021 19:36

God, I could have written this. I do two classes a week with a “Pat”. Once instructor does as she says and keeps the place boiling, the other says no, it’s too warm, tells her to stand somewhere else other than near the fans/ air con. Once she started crying (fake, I think) because she said she was too cold. She was wearing a vest so if she feels the cold so much, why? She is a royal pain.

coogee · 16/11/2021 19:38

My gym doesn’t have air con. It’s fine.
