Gym studio heating

A trivial AIBU, but as it’s happened at least once a week, for 5 years and came to a bit of a head this week, I thought I’d ask.

I go to a gym and do classes regularly there. There is a lady (let’s call her Pat), who also does classes. Pat will get there early and will turn the air con off and put the heating on. Pat feels the cold. For context Pat is in her 70s, so may feel it more. The age range of the classes is generally all ages though. Then the rest of us arrive and it’s warm, within 5 mins of exercise it’s horrible. We generally grin and bear this as Pat feels the cold. She does wear 3/4 leggings and 3/4 length top whilst the majority wear shorts and vest so is trying a little to insulate herself. It came to a head this week when a new instructor arrived and a couple of newer people also and were incredulous. Air con was cranked up, doors were opened. Pat was cold. At the end of the class many apologised to Pat and Pat was tearful as she was cold, won’t come to the classes if it’s like that. All very awkward.

What do you think?
YABU - Pat should have the monopoly on heating.
YANBU - The majority should rule and Pat should wear more layers.

Pat isn’t the queen of the gym
Yanbu

Stellaris22 · 16/11/2021 19:45

Over the summer the air con/fans didn’t work in our gym, it made cycle classes a sweaty nightmare.

kowari · 16/11/2021 19:50

Why can't Pat just wear thermal leggings and a sweatshirt?

CactusFlowers · 16/11/2021 20:02

Pat should swap to hot yoga.

Graphista · 16/11/2021 20:06

I think pat needs to see her dr! That sounds like very poor circulation to me even considering she's in her 70's.

One person can't overrule the majority that's ridiculous

Also as said she could wear additional layers, no reason she couldn't also wear footless tights and sweater even warm socks, leg warmers and a hat

She could even wear a heat pad somewhere about her body (I use these for chronic pain they're fab)

VioletVesper · 16/11/2021 20:14

YANBU. I couldn’t cope with the heating on in a gym class. Surely it is driving other gym users away from the class so is bad for business?

TheOccupier · 16/11/2021 20:22

I will have to spend the rest of my life on a medication that keeps me alive but also makes me get hot very easily and tolerate heat worse than the average person. I have to have the AC on and/or stand by a fan for studio exercise classes (of which I do many), otherwise I feel ill and struggle to complete the class. Pat needs to invest in some thermals.

I'd be going to the front desk every time she messes with the heating/AC to ask if a staff member could come and reset it to default and remind her to leave it be.

ObnoxiousFeminist · 16/11/2021 20:50

Everyone needs to stop being fucking wimps and letting Pat make all of them feel uncomfortable. She needs to layer up. You could do the classes naked and still be too hot.

gabsdot45 · 16/11/2021 21:12

I voted YABU by accident
I do not think pat should have the monopoly of heating

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 16/11/2021 21:16

Pat needs to do hot yoga if she can't workout without heat, personally I can't bear classes that are too warm, also it's not very Covid proof. I feel your pain op.

gamerchick · 16/11/2021 21:27

She should have been stood up to years ago. You can't exercise with the heating on, she needs to wear appropriate clothing.

It's time to stick to guns here.

shouldistop · 16/11/2021 21:33

Pat sounds like a pain in the arse. If Pat is that cold then Pat should be wearing a fleece.

Momniscient · 16/11/2021 21:34

Surely for covid the windows need to be open anyway? I do a weekly yoga class with all the windows open and everyone's in long/thermal leggings, long sleeves and jumpers... and some bring blankets for the relaxation bit at the end! Grin The time is now. Pat needs to cop on.

Pizzapizzaz · 16/11/2021 23:06

The irony is I do actually suffer with raynauds too, but I make sure I stay warm before the class with many layers and then 1 min in to the class I’m sweating!

Thanks all, I’m going to raise it. I don’t think I’ll cross over with her till later in the week but I’ll report back. The gym staff for whatever reason want an easy life!

I overheated once when exercising in a far too-warm room, my heart went into a supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) rhythm and I felt absolutely monstrous. Genuinely thought I was going to die. I went to hospital and it eventually corrected itself but I was convinced they’d have to shock me for a while.

Tell Pat she’s being selfish and dangerous. She can wrap up, but expecting people to exert themselves with the heating on is mental.

mum11970 · 16/11/2021 23:24

I couldn’t workout in that kind of heat. I suffer from hyperhidrosis and get very hot very quickly when working out and sweat so much I have to bring a towel. Overheating is way more dangerous than being a bit cold. Not a chance I would put up with that. Pat needs to put more clothes on or try hot yoga.

StrawberrySquash · 16/11/2021 23:34

I don't understand people who complain they are cold when they are wearing minimal clothes. When it's cold I wear a fleece to run in. Pat needs to do the same.

Stellaris22 · 17/11/2021 06:58

How do you enter the gym? Do you need to enter a code or is it a manned reception?

If it’s code entry and the staff are scared of her, then could they suspend her membership to deny entry? Messing with the heating repeatedly surely should be a reason to not allow her to use the gym.

User4272946730203 · 17/11/2021 07:13

Pat can wear a jumper and stop being ridiculous.

hopeishere · 17/11/2021 07:16

She can't be that frail if she's going to the gym! She needs to layer up. Does the gym do a newsletter? They could add something in it about this?

Pizzapizzaz · 17/11/2021 15:53

@Stellaris22 no code, it’s an independent gym. You go in, swipe card at reception, and then main gym / one studio is upstairs, changing rooms, cafe other studio downstairs. Reception staff generally teenagers with no interest in getting involved. It’s all on the instructors to challenge.

OP posts:
Stellaris22 · 17/11/2021 16:12

Would it be possible to inactivate her card to suspend her membership? It does seem worthy of suspension (at the least). Any member causing unsafe conditions shouldn’t be allowed to use the gym.

I hope it gets resolved, I’d hate it and would seriously consider changing gyms, no member should make others feel that way.

AffableApple · 18/11/2021 15:13

Pat needs to see a doctor and/or buy some nice thermals and a fleece. And get tae. It's a gym not a sauna.

AffableApple · 18/11/2021 15:15

Does she always stand in the same place? Is she directly under a vent?
