To wonder why some people are twats towards cyclists

I’ve lost count of the number of times a car has driven past me and people (usually grown men) have screamed/shrieked at me out of their window, shouted obscenities etc.
Beeped at and then they drive on laughing
Today I had a teenage boy deliberately try and jump in front of my path on a road, this isn’t the first time someone has done that.
I had another teenager try to intimidate me by pulling out in front of me on his own bike, forcing me to quickly swerve

It’s putting me off cycling really, there are some absolute pricks out there.

Also, the number of people who have to comment on how small the bike is. It’s not one of the mini fold up bikes or a children’s one, it’s a bit smaller than average but suits me fine, but people have to comment on it constantly which is weird.

Anyone else had this when cycling? I’m responsible, use lights and wear a high vis and go slowly

@RantyAunty

Men are arseholes behind the wheel and on two wheels.
None of them nice? Not one? 100% arseholes, all of them?

Misandry at its best'

DownWhichOfLate · 16/11/2021 20:08

A lot of the hate is probably from desperately unhealthy and unfit car drivers. Jealousy.

Rantyaunty, try saying that to the wives, mothers and children of men killed on their bikes, mostly through no fault of their own

nocoolnamesleft · 16/11/2021 20:14

As a driver, I endeavour to drive sensibly, safely, and courteously. Especially around cyclists, as they are vulnerable. However, I have previously been knocked over by a cyclist who was riding on the pavement, and then blamed me for not leaping out of the way. As I use a walking aid, my disability is not invisible. And earlier this week I was signalling to turn right off a major road into a minor one when a particularly suicidal cyclist thought it was a good idea to overtake me. Thank fuck I saw the fuckwit. Some cyclists are absolutely fucking selfish pillocks.

@Fomofo

So a paediatrician, for example, cycling to work, deserves less respect than a tractor driver?
No. A paediatrician does a morally superior act by cycling to work than if that same paediatrician chooses to drive.

I am of course assuming that the paediatrician is physically capable of cycling but, face it, most people are capable of riding a bike

This is obvious, isn't it?

Fomofo · 16/11/2021 20:16

Nocool, yep and drivers

Fomofo · 16/11/2021 20:21

Tompinch, well I only say paediatrician, as this one was killed recently, but hey all cyclists are twats and a waste of space.

Sorry I HRFT, but I agree with @DreadingChristmasAlready, we are really rural and some cyclists just obviously haven't passed their proficiency tests. Winding lanes and no high vis etc. my mum also got run over by a cyclist, right up the back of her legs (on a pavement) and over her back in the 70's, we laugh now but she was cut to ribbons with gravel rash 😂

This. I remember having the following conversation while I was filtering through traffic in Auckland.

Get off the road!!
No, I'm allowed to ride on it.
Then get a driver's licence.
I've got one.
Why aren't you driving then?
Traffic.

Off I went, but I've often felt since that I should have told him that cycling would do him some good

MinnieJackson · 16/11/2021 20:24

Wait...just seen the last PP, are you talking about maniac paeadtricians, or pedestrians?

Ah, I think we're talking at cross-purposes. I thought you were responding to me.

I agree. Cyclists need to have their rights on the road enforced and motorists simply need to stop moaning. They have no more credibility than tobacco companies.

Fomofo · 16/11/2021 20:27

Traderjoes, and what part was the over weight driver playing in that scenario?

I know. How dare I not simply ignore him. He should have been entitled to say what he liked to me without having to be burdened with any reply.
Fomofo · 16/11/2021 20:28

Tompinch, ah yes, I was responding to the poster who said tractor drivers were doing an actual job so didn't mind being held up by them

Want to explain why @traderjoes? He made a comment, she replied.
traderjoes · 16/11/2021 20:32

She thought she was better than him because he’s overweight and she’s a dainty little thing on her dainty little bike? Pathetic attitude.

TomPinch · 16/11/2021 20:33

@traderjoes

He weight has literally nothing to do with anything, spiteful little brat.
I don't think he'd have had the right to have his sensitivities respected on that point. Nor do you.
lemonlimon · 16/11/2021 20:33

I live in the countryside. Cyclists are extremely annoying here. I've never abused any and am respectful but when you're stuck on a single lane behind one and they don't pull over it's ridiculous. Tractors do pull over if they create huge queues. Cyclists have never done this.
I do think though that there should be more infrastructure for cyclists though.

Fomofo · 16/11/2021 20:37

I'm a driver and a cyclist, and a pedestrian. Cyclists don't annoy me cos I don't drive like a dick and if they do something dodgy I just make sure I don't hurt them with the big fat tonne of metal that cars are made of. As a pedestrian I'm kinda happy to share the space.

TomPinch · 16/11/2021 20:38

Whoa there, that comment is really, really telling. Is it the daintyness that offends you?

I was a bloke on a mountain bike.

ShipwreckSunset · 16/11/2021 20:39

Really disappointed to read some of the comments on here. Whilst I agree that some cyclists act like twats, it certainly isn’t all and there are so many negative comments on here.

Someone always comes out witht the road tax crap, despite roads being paid from general taxation and not ‘owned’ by car drivers. Cyclists round here are generally car drivers as well, I don’t think many people exclusively ride a bike outside of cities anyway.

I also think car drivers see lone cyclists as easy targets, esp women. You don’t see them hooting their horn and yelling abuse out their windows at boy racers or people speeding, but it is much less intimidating to pick on a more vulnerable road user.
