To wonder why some people are twats towards cyclists

I’ve lost count of the number of times a car has driven past me and people (usually grown men) have screamed/shrieked at me out of their window, shouted obscenities etc.
Beeped at and then they drive on laughing
Today I had a teenage boy deliberately try and jump in front of my path on a road, this isn’t the first time someone has done that.
I had another teenager try to intimidate me by pulling out in front of me on his own bike, forcing me to quickly swerve

It’s putting me off cycling really, there are some absolute pricks out there.

Also, the number of people who have to comment on how small the bike is. It’s not one of the mini fold up bikes or a children’s one, it’s a bit smaller than average but suits me fine, but people have to comment on it constantly which is weird.

Anyone else had this when cycling? I’m responsible, use lights and wear a high vis and go slowly

@trappedsincesundaymorn

There appears to be a theme here

Drivers complaining about cyclists holding them up = ignorance on driver's part

Pedestrians holding up cyclists = ignorance on pedestrians part.

It's never the cyclist's fault is it?

There's been plenty of explanation as to why no the cyclist is behaving perfectly legally and within the Highway Code. So if a car has to wait to overtake, then they will just have to do that, as they would behind a horse, tractor etc. No pedestrians should not be walking in the cycle lanes, stepping out in front of bikes etc. Cyclists shouldn't be riding on pavements, jumping red lights. But most of the time people moan about cyclists doing things that is completely reasonable legal and safe.
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 16/11/2021 19:07

But what if 10 or 15 cars are waiting to overtake a cycling club all bunched up together? Who don’t pull over? And the amount of cars keeps going up.

LittleDandelionClock · 16/11/2021 19:15

@MintyGreenDream

Cyclists should be identifiable just like car users. I always get shot down when I suggest they should have number plates but I still stand by that it's a good idea.

100% this.

@ZeroFuchsGiven

I don't shout abuse but will happily admit I can not abide cyclists, I live rurally and they are an absolute pain in the arse.

No problems with Horses or tractors.

ALSO THIS! ^ Exactly how I feel. I live rurally, and I have all the time in the world for horses and tractors, and big heavy slow moving lorries with heavy cargo, and horseboxes etc. But cyclists (the lycra-clad c*nts in their groups who live and breathe cycling, not ordinary folk off for a wee bike ride,) really boil my piss.

Also want to add, that although I think there IS misogyny in a lot of things in society, this isn't one of those instances. (IME anyway.) My DH and many men I know loathe male cyclists way more than female ones. And more male drivers too.

3scape · 16/11/2021 19:21

It'd be great to identify cyclists as much as video cam footage I take identifies car drivers and I do, funnily enough there are incidents demonstrating shit driving on every bike ride and far less frequently from my car. It's probably only once a week a car seems to properly know how to overtake me on my bike. Far more frequently done correctly when I'm in a car.
Most cyclists would be happy with more footage and accountability.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 16/11/2021 19:22

And me! I don’t care about cyclists using them for transport or families. It’s the hoards and mobs of Lycra clad twats who totally take over the roads and do whatever they want. They totally disregard other road users. But somehow it always seems to be the other road users fault😐

CMZ2018 · 16/11/2021 19:23

Because they’re generally bell ends, especially in groups on country lanes.

3scape · 16/11/2021 19:24

Sorry you don't like cyclists. I will be sure not to give two fucks about what some twat on a country road thinks of my cycling along to school. It's a journey. Cars don't have any greater rights to journeys than any other road user ffs.

3scape · 16/11/2021 19:26

Do you stop to interview each and every road user on the validity of their journey or is this just something you feel entitled to since Covid?

dementedma · 16/11/2021 19:28

Because a lot of cyclists are twats too

ColinTheKoala · 16/11/2021 19:29

@Pennguin

I don't think it's because you're a cyclist. It's because you're a woman. It's misogyny.
I think being a woman is a big part of it, but people do hate cyclists because they don't like being held up by them or having to get out of the way for them. It's all down to a lack of patience.

It would really help if we had more segregated infrastructure of a decent quality.

Haventhadaneggsinceeaster · 16/11/2021 19:47

@TuftyMarmoset

This needs to be displayed in every car until people stop moaning about cyclists cycling side by side
This only works on roads that are wide enough to have a lane in both directions. Most of the roads I use do not have a lane in both directions and either have passing places which cars, tractors and horse riders use readily but which cyclists seem to think they are above using or only have enough room to squeeze 2 cars past each other very slowly and so have a whole queue of cars behind them whereas single file would allow enough room for a car to pass
Offmyfence · 16/11/2021 19:49

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

So is everyone with a carsupposed to plan their Sunday afternoon out to accommodate the huge amount of cycling clubs?🤔
Well yes, the same as you would when travelling in rush hour?

I know it's busy this time of day, so the journey will be 20 mins instead of 10!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 16/11/2021 19:52

Except there wouldn’t be a problem with traffic if it wasn’t for the clubs.

And it’s clubs l hate not lone cyclists or families.

Fomofo · 16/11/2021 19:52

Littledandelionclock, if your piss is so easily boiled, should you really be behind the wheel of a car?

Offmyfence · 16/11/2021 19:54

@XelaM

I HATE cyclists!!! Why do they think the rules of the road don't apply to them?!? Almost 100% of the cyclists I see don't care about traffic lights! They should be fined just like drivers
Well that's dispelled the misogyny theory and proved the ridiculous hatred theory!
Fomofo · 16/11/2021 19:55

I thought the rural life was meant to be relaxing!

TomPinch · 16/11/2021 19:58

I dislike veganism. I have a knee-jerk reaction against all vegan stuff.

I would be tempted to throw all kinds of slurs their way, except I know exactly why I'd do this: because I'm afraid they might just be right in their reasons for being vegans, meaning I should be one too.

Same with cycling. It reduces pollution, assists with health, reduces congestion on the road, and is safer to other road users. It is morally superior to motoring on every measure, and a person who chooses to cycle rather than drive chooses a morally superior act.

This is why cyclists get so much hate. It's the inner child of the average motorist coming out. It manifests itself with remarks that draw an equivalence between twatty cyclists and twatty motorists. This is no more rational than drawing an equivalence between a psycho with a gun and a psycho with a supersoaker.

Fomofo · 16/11/2021 19:58

So a paediatrician, for example, cycling to work, deserves less respect than a tractor driver?

FrenchBoule · 16/11/2021 19:58

These horrible polluters in their metal boxes,how dare they use the roads 😡

I live in rural area with horses.
There’s no problem with them,all riders wearing hi-vis clothing and everybody will give them wide berth.
The horse riders will step off the road sometimes to let the cars pass.

Cyclists though…

Dusk/down, bikes with NO lights,dark clothing without any high-vis gear.
If they want to be treated as equal road users their vehicle should be equipped to go on it.
Vulnerable road user? Make sure you’re visible to the other road users as it gives them more time to react.

Bending the rules- they can go through red light,can’t they? Not to mention the twat holding the car mirror to stable himself then giving a car a forceful pat before moving off.

New and shiny wide cycle/pedestrian lane- no,cyclist decides to go on the road. This is apparently because there’s a speed limit for cyclists on shared lane. So what?
Drives have to abide the speed limits but it doesn’t apply to cyclists?

Rural single track road, coming out of a corner I had to do emergency stop(was driving about 30mph) as was met with 4 men cycling abreast. Where the fuck they expected me to go I don’t know. I had 2 kids in the car. I got filthy looks because I didn’t moved off the road(nowhere to go) to let them pass.

I’m a cyclist as well.

I dislike SOME cyclists on the road as they are selfish and inconsiderate.
Let the traffic flow, give way, let the car out, give the cyclist space and BE CONSIDERATE. This applies to everybody,not just drivers.

Car drivers don’t own the road but neither do cyclists.

French boule - angry drivers are more dangerous than angry cyclists

GoldenOmber · 16/11/2021 20:01

If they’re going too fast for a shared path, they’re not going to be slowing you down too much on the road. Which they’re as entitled to use on a bike as you are in a car, so 🤷‍♀️

Fomofo · 16/11/2021 20:02

Ooh traderJoe's, some nice murderous hate there

Offmyfence · 16/11/2021 20:03

@traderjoes

People are twats towards cyclists because cyclists are twats. Every last one of them, with special mention to the middle aged (usual bald) men in lycra who I’m not ashamed to say I would fucking love to flatten with my car.
Again dispels the misogyny theory and proves just plain hatred theory!
RantyAunty · 16/11/2021 20:06

Men are arseholes behind the wheel and on two wheels.
