Would you live in a house where there had been a murder?

Just that really… DP and I looking at buying a second property to rent out. It’s underpriced and chain free… because 18 months ago the husband murdered his wife in one of the bedrooms. It’s put me off a good amount but DP is still keen to go ahead with the sale and says there will be lots of people that won’t want t rent it but it won’t put EVERYONE off. Would it put you off?

No- unless it was in a generally violent area; or unless the murderer was likely to be still at large. However, if it's for renting out, you would have to bear in mind that some people would be put off, and others might be ghoulish types for whom it would make the house interesting, and they might not be the sort of people whom you want to rent to.

DukeofEarlGrey · 16/11/2021 21:44

Definitely not for me. I admire those that could.

StoneofDestiny · 16/11/2021 22:57

The energy of the event stays in the house

The energy of the event 🙄 - what form does this 'energy' take? Air, liquid, solid? Given many of us are living above the remains of early Britons, Celtic, Roman, Viking .........thousands of years of history with all its gruesome goings on - we will have so much 'energy' in our homes we could add it to the National Grid!

georgarina · 16/11/2021 23:12

I wouldn't be able to. I'm a superstitious/easily spooked person anyway and wouldn't be able to get over that.

shinynewapple21 · 16/11/2021 23:34

I wouldn't want to live there .

But it maybe different if you are letting it out as people may be less fussed if their plan is to rent short term.

5foot5 · 17/11/2021 00:09

Wouldn't bother me. Mind you I used to rent a room in a house where a fairly well known person committed suicide. At various points I slept in every room in that house so almost certainly the actual room.

Have to admit I didn't actually know that when I moved there. I believe since then it has become more common for fans to turn up outside and there was a move to have a blue plaque which came to nothing. Would have found that a bit exasperating if I was still there.

RedskyThisNight · 17/11/2021 07:47

This thread has been a real eye opener in to how many people in the 21st century are still superstitious. About 50/50 I'd say - so 50% of people still disbelieve science?

CatonMat · 17/11/2021 07:57

I'm not supersticious, I don't believe in ghosts.
I would just find my mind drifting into wondering about the misery/fear, and who would choose to have those thoughts if they didnt have to?

God no!!

@Handsoffstrikesagain

redsky I’d say the % is even higher. I think we Brits are very superstitious, even subconsciously. We clip ravens wings to prevent the downfall of the monarchy for goodness sake Hmm I have to say I too am intrigued re the energy comment. That must mean there’s lots of negative energy pretty much everywhere.
I’d agree. I’m always surprised at the level of superstition and credulousness as regards the ‘supernatural’ on here.
NeedWineNow · 17/11/2021 09:05

Not a hope in hell. My mind would go completely into overdrive, in the same way as I couldn't live in a converted church/chapel.

Helpimfalling · 17/11/2021 09:21

@Swimminginmud

My sister was killed in her flat and not found for 2 weeks along with her killer who also died. It was rented out again 6 months later. I’m not sure if they had to inform the new tenants but I would be very upset if that information was withheld from me.
I'm sorry Thanks

I quite like them. Our old house was built in a convent. When I worked for the cofe I had keys to a few old churches and loved going in by myself when I needed to sort things out - nice vibes.
UndertonesOfCake · 17/11/2021 09:27

If you're renting it out, and are willing to accept a dog owner, then to be perfectly honest I couldn't afford to be that fussy.

yikesanotherbooboo · 17/11/2021 10:00

My parents lived in a house where there had been a recent murder.My mother hated it but my father didn't mind.

Ostagazuzulum · 17/11/2021 17:26

It'd put me off. Illogical I suppose but that's how I feel.

Beautybunny · 17/11/2021 17:34

I owned a house where there had found a skeleton. Couldn't sell it for four years then made a £250k loss.

Whyyyyyyyohhhhhwhyyyyyy · 17/11/2021 17:35

It's a hard no from me, I am fascinated by paranormal stuff/crime stuff but I can categorically say I will not live in a house that someone was murdered in. The house would always have a malicious 'feel' to it.

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 17/11/2021 17:39

How does anyone know they don’t live in a house where there’s been a murder, and how would you check? 🤔 I might do, I’ve know idea.

OVienna · 17/11/2021 17:41

@HeartsAndClubs

Nope, no idea why it would put anyone off.

If it was e.g. 25 Cromwell street and was likely to attract tourists I probably wouldn’t go there, but nothing actually happened there while you were there. You weren’t witness to anything, and the person who was murdered there isn’t there and neither is the murderer.

If you buy a house that’s more than about 50 years old odds are someone has died there even if they haven’t been murdered. And lots of houses are built on historical sights where many battles and murders took place.

Yes, I think this is a key thing: Is it a sort of situation where it would likely attract tourists? Exactly how much press etc did it get?

Think of all the carbon offsetting we could do.
NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 17/11/2021 17:42

Put it like this
I’m sure there’s a few of us who live in a house where someone has been murdered or at least dies and we are none the wiser

Morgysmum · 17/11/2021 17:43

Not at all, I am a bit weird like that. It's not like someone is going to come around for victim number 2. You might have to rent it out about cheaper, if the neighbours keep going on about it, as potential tenants might not want to live there.

OVienna · 17/11/2021 17:47

@SirSidneyRuffDiamond

A friend rented a house where there had been a murder - she had been out of the UK for 2 years and was unaware when she signed the lease. She found out because people would randomly leave bouquets on the doorstep. That was not ideal, but not too horrendous. Then one day she came home to find the family and friends of the murder victim holding a remembrance/vigil in the back garden. That was one step too far for her and she moved out ASAP.
