Waited in hospital since 10pm to see out of hours gp. It's now 2am. Do I give up and go home?

There's 5 people ahead of me in the queue. Receptionist has no idea how long they will all take.

Do I go home and plead my GP for an appointment tomorrow?

Feel so stupid to have waited so long and to go home. But I ache so much. I need to go to bed

Get well soon, hope you feel better. I hope they take the blasted tonsils out, you really are better off without them xx

I would not wait in hospital with tonsilitis… I am sure it’s horrible but not an emergency. If you have a GP you can fill out an online form and they should call you back.

She’s not taking an A&E appointment, she’s was waiting to be seen by the out of hours GP, as her own GP has no appointments.
Well no, they won't have appointments available in the middle of the night, but they might have some available tomorrow. It's sound advice to at least try on the phone or econsult.**

If she could see her own GP, she wouldn’t need an out of hours GP appointment Hmm

Lots of surgeries don’t offer econsults appointments also.

I’m glad you’ve got some treatment OP and hopefully your on the mend ASAP.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 20/11/2021 09:50

@Carriecakes80 I'm so sorry for your loss Thanks The same happened to me and this was before Covid. I do think better and quicker care needs to be given during a miscarriage. It's heartbreaking enough as it is without having to sit for hours and hours in A&E heavily bleeding and in lots of pain. The whole thing for me just felt so surreal. Once I was finally taken to the outpatient ward I had an even longer wait and then just had a curtain and a plastic screen between me the guy next to me and the person opposite me whilst the gynaecologist scraped clots and tissue out of my cervix. I'd had 3 miscarriages prior to that, that I was thankfully able to manage at home and one earlier this year that I was also thankfully able to manage at home

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 20/11/2021 14:20

Really feel for you, op - it’s grim suffering to that extent and I had a week in hospital with a quinsy - it frightened me to be honest. I hope that you bounce back quickly.

PearlyShamps · 20/11/2021 19:09

I'm so sorry you're now in hospital. That's awful. Bacterial tonsilitis is just the pits. I've had it on a few occasions, and ended up at the local A&E to see out-of-hours GP. It can (rarely) lead to sepsis if not treated.
I suspect the people being unsympathetic have only ever had viral tonsilitis, which is a VERY different illness, and essentially is just a sore throat. The kind you have just takes over your whole body.
I really hope you have a full and speedy recovery, OP.

MarieVanGoethem · 20/11/2021 19:10

@GrrrlPwr
So sorry you’ve ended up in hospital: hope that IV antibiotics (& anything else they do) make the crucial difference & you’re soon well (& back at work).

Fluffmum · 20/11/2021 19:23

Stick it out. You just dunno when you can get an appointment nowadays

ragged · 20/11/2021 19:34

When did you get admitted to hospital, @GrrrlPwr -- how sick are you now (I 100% believe you are very ill, just wondering how bad it has got now, for you to be admitted).

X fingers you won't have to stay in long.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/11/2021 19:37

Hope you're feeling better very soon OPFlowers

pickingdaisies · 20/11/2021 19:44

Hi OP so sorry to hear you've been admitted. Hope the treatment is working for you and you start to feel better soon x

Lougle · 20/11/2021 20:02

Glad you're in the right place. Get better soon.

nolongersurprised · 20/11/2021 20:03

tonsillectomies are not really done nowadays, particularly with adults, but hey ready to be proved wrong

They are in Australia. My DH had his out a few years - he has been much better for it. He was having bouts of bad tonsillitis that were actually making him seem bacteraemic - shaky, hot, vomiting etc. It wasn’t difficult at all to access.

Children still to as well, though not as often as a generation ago. If it’s just loud snoring it’s usually just adenoids but if severe obstruction proven with sleep study both are still removed. They’re removed for recurrent, severe tonsillitis as well. Some tonsils are just problematic

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/11/2021 20:05

They aren't down routinely like they used to be ,they just used to whip them out almost as a preventative measure but of course they remove them in severe cases.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 20/11/2021 20:12

I thought it could end up like this! A colleague of mine had tonsillitis and couldn't eat or drink because of it. The pus made her start throwing up and 111 recommended she went to A and E. She didn't want to but was persuaded by me and her husband. Within a few hours she was on a ward and on a drip as she threw up the antibiotics they tried to give her. Two days in hospital then she started to feel better and so was allowed home. She was off work for two weeks. We really shouldn't judge what other people are going through if we are not experiencing it ourselves.

StarCourt · 20/11/2021 21:29

DD12 gets tonsillitis a lot. Her last bout was an ambulance to hospital and being on a drip for a 2 night stay. All in all it took 5 different types of antibiotics to get it under control.

Eastridingclub · 20/11/2021 21:34

Get well soon op.

I suffered greatly with this. Had them out and never looked back. If they give you the option, take it

I hope all the idiots on this thread berating OP for daring to seek medical attention feel ashamed of themselves now. Anyone with half a brain could tell she was really poorly.

Notenoughchocolateomg · 20/11/2021 22:10

How are you doing OP? You have my great sympathy, I have had it many many times and it absolutely floors me. People who haven't had it definitely dint appreciate how unwell it makes you feel.

lorisparkle · 20/11/2021 22:35

Hope you are doing OK - I was lucky enough to see GP for severe tonsillitis and was sent straight away to A&E and then admitted onto a ward after having the tonsil abscess drained. Those people who say that severe tonsillitis is not serious enough need to read more. The GP insisted I went straight to hospital as if not treated I could have suffocated or had sepsis. It actually was quite scary.

At least you are in the right place - I felt pretty awful for a couple of weeks but luckily no reoccurrence.

Sirecho · 21/11/2021 01:23

ENT ward nurse here. A quinsy is a horrible to have. Our quinsy patients are often a lot sicker than our severe tonsillitis patients. On a positive note, certainly at our Trust, if you are admitted with a severe quinsy you automatically get put on the waiting list for a tonsillectomy. Hope you feel better soon.

how online could anyone tell how the op was @GreenLunchBox
ThePoisonousMushroom · 21/11/2021 08:21

how online could anyone tell how the op was @GreenLunchBox**

That’s irrelevant really. Despite not knowing how ill she was, people were telling her that tonsillitis isn’t serious, that she was ridiculous to see someone out of hours etc. That’s quite frankly dangerous, precisely because they didn’t know how ill she was.
There is always a chance that a bacterial infection can be serious. The best person to judge that is a medical professional, which is who the OP was trying to see.
