Waited in hospital since 10pm to see out of hours gp. It's now 2am. Do I give up and go home?

There's 5 people ahead of me in the queue. Receptionist has no idea how long they will all take.

Do I go home and plead my GP for an appointment tomorrow?

Feel so stupid to have waited so long and to go home. But I ache so much. I need to go to bed

Understandable @Floundery, but I would argue that casting no vote isn’t the way to achieve what you’ve clearly put some thought into. Sometimes it means voting for the least bad option in front of you but I consider it a small step in the right direction if your ideals aren’t being represented by candidates available.

All the parties market themselves to the voters that attend the polls, not using that voice means that you’re ignored and those with large majorities are considered the starting point for policies to attract voters.

From a personal perspective I don’t feel any allegiance to one political party and really struggled with the last GE but did know who I absolutely did not want to vote for and ended up voting tactically against one particular party rather than for anyone. Given the state of this countries politics I think that sometimes that’s the best you can hope for and it’s better to target rejection at specific groups rather than the entire concept of voting.

Careful what you wish for eh?! WinkGrin

BoredZelda · 18/11/2021 14:51

what relevance does it have how rare it is? As rare as it is, it's happened to me several times. And I'm as average as they come

The relevance is, as a complication of tonsillitis it is very rare so dragging your arse to A&E with tonsillitis for most people will be a complete waste of time.

Anyone desperately struggling to eat or drink for any reason should seek medical advice.

Yeah it would be. Good thing that’s not what the OP did then. She went to a pre booked appointment at the out of hours GP, which happens to be based at the hospital.

Like seat belts and smear tests.

I'm so sorry to read this.
My 6 year old had to go to a&e yesterday by ambulance and once he had his obs done dh brought him home (with their blessing) despite him not seeing a doctor.
Simply because they'd got the at 9.30 and at 1.30 they were saying he was unlikely to see a doctor until 8am.
He brought him home and we got a gp appointment at 8.50am thankfully.
I'm so glad it wasn't more serious in the end (he has suspected covid and breathing was really awful for a good 5 hours but improved while in a&e)

Anyone going to hospital A&E or out of hours nightnservices with a sore throat is going to be triaged waaayy down the bottom as people with actual Life threatening injuries or conditions
Need to be seen first.
Doesn’t matter if it’s a private hospital or the NHS you can’t queue jump for minor ailments or needing a bloody prescription.
A good friend is the GP at a hospital nights Trying to keep people out of A&E and at this time of year she says it’s all people with earache and sore throats and run of the mill
stuff that doesn’t need urgent care, and it drives her mad that people
Don’t seem to understand that hospitals are full of people who genuinely need help
Immediately.
So no, you aren’t going to be triaged to the top for tonsillitis or a sprained ankle or a migraine.

She wasn’t at A&E with a sore throat. She was at an out of hours GP service with a pre booked appointment, with severe tonsillitis.

Good news! She didn’t!

Lougle · 18/11/2021 15:37

"So no, you aren’t going to be triaged to the top for tonsillitis or a sprained ankle or a migraine."

I was. I had a migraine and passed out, then regained consciousness. I called 111, went to OOH Dr within the hospital. Passed out again - Dr called code. Round to A&E and seen immediately until they were sure I wasn't having a brain bleed.

The point is, tonsillitis can be life threatening, a migraine can be a symptom of a brain bleed, etc. It's really dangerous to tell people they 'shouldn't go to A&E' when you have no idea what's wrong with them. People use the language they have. If they have a subarachnoid haemorrhage, but often get migraines, they'll describe it as "the worst migraine of my life!" It takes skill to work through the symptoms and realise that actually, it's something more serious.

Someone with quinsy might say "I've got really bad tonsillitis". It takes skill to work out that actually, they can't swallow their own saliva, or their breathing is affected, etc.

GrinGrinGrin sorry but I snorted at that Grin

Our hospital has a&e reception and OOH
111 will make you an appointment at OOH, that's what it's there for
Life threatening is a&e which is where the OP didn't go

GreenLunchBox · 18/11/2021 15:44

People on this thread are so thick, it's honestly embarrassing

Glad you've got your meds, OP

smilingontheinside · 18/11/2021 16:19

I can sympathise op having an ac that suffered with acute tonsillitis on a regular basis. So bad one time we had to call 111 whilst on holiday as could not breath. Was told to rush to nearest hospital, seen by Dr and admitted. Spent rest of weeks hols (6 of 7 days) going back and forth visiting. Had quinsies and had to have tonsils drained a second time. Once home saw own Dr and wSas rushed in for a tonsillectomy within a couple weeks. I've only had it severely once and that was enough. Hope you are feeling better now 🤞

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 18/11/2021 16:34

I was triaged to the top with stomach ache. It was a good job really as I actually had pancreatitis.

GrrrlPwr · 18/11/2021 16:35

On new meds now. Let's hope they do something. Still feel like am being run over.

NHS is screwed. I have had enough of it. Can be excellent for really serious stuff, transplants, cardiac problems etc. Basic GP level care abysmal. Won't be the Holy Cow of British life in 10 years time of this continues.

enjoyitwhileitlasts · 18/11/2021 17:42

@Malibuismysecrethome
A cynic might even think they are trying to deny access to healthcare.

I was thinking the same as you. The Conservative government has wanted to privatise NHS for years. It is being run into the ground. I am not a conspiracy theorist or a Labour Voter.
