Waited in hospital since 10pm to see out of hours gp. It's now 2am. Do I give up and go home?

There's 5 people ahead of me in the queue. Receptionist has no idea how long they will all take.

Do I go home and plead my GP for an appointment tomorrow?

Feel so stupid to have waited so long and to go home. But I ache so much. I need to go to bed

Go home and get emergency gp app tomorrow. Even over the phone they should give you anti biotics

GreenLunchBox · 17/11/2021 19:11

So many hard of thinking people on this thread. OP went to the out of hours GP which is based in a hospital. She didn't go to A+E FFS

gunnersgold · 17/11/2021 19:12

Is ringing 111 and getting an ooh appointment not a thing now ? I'm lucky we are hardly ever unwell but that's what I did last time I needed something and got a timed appointment at another surgery at a weekend .. I'm not sure I'd sit and wait at one of those places , sounds like hell !

Well hopefully she's not still there!
Mandyjack · 17/11/2021 19:15

I'm sure you can now get antibiotics in a chemist, try and get some Tyrozets too

I've called 111 before for an OOH appointment and got promised a call back. I never got a call back and ended up waiting until the Monday to call GP.

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

oh and your jumping to conclusions, yes unfortunately i have had it a few times and had to manage without running off to the hospital about it, in fact going to hospital wasnt even entering my head like many other people wouldnt do eitther,

Presumably that was when it was possible to see a doctor.

find a 24 hr pharmacy get some really good painkillers and go home! make appt to see your gp at the earliest time able that is the normal way of getting it treated

See your GP at the earliest opportunity?! Mine had a 2 week wait for telephone appointments!

@PinkSparklyPussyCat strangely enough i am speaking to my gp tomorrow afternoon, i made the appt on monday, so not too long to wait really for something much more involved and important and life threatening than toncilitus! and will no doubt be called into the surgery and see by tea time tomorrow night too!

oh yeah i also had an hospital appt made yesterday afternoon and was seen at 11 am today!

and plenty more would be able to have the same level of help if those that are taking the piss with minor ailments stopped turning up at a&e/urgent care needlessly and used their brains to treat themselves at home until they can see their gp

@Malibuismysecrethome

Lakielady I agree and I’m still apoplectic at the enormous waste for Nightingale hospitals that were fully equipped, never used, dismantled and then presumably the equipment sold off for peanuts. No one has ever asked where everything went.
They were used, stop reading propaganda

This is not something you should go to A&E with it is not an accident or an emergency, please use this as a wake up call keep a supply of medication at home for use till you can see either your doctor or a pharmacist, an antibacterial throat spray, dissolving paracetamol & codeine to gargle and swallow then some honey & lemon in hot water, it is people with minor complaints ( I appreciate you felt like shit) but a very sore throat is NOT something you should go to A&E with, you could have gone to a 24 hour pharmacy and been home with a hot water bottle in bed a lot earlier.

PeachyPeachTrees · 17/11/2021 19:26

She wasn't at A&E. RTFT

purplebunny2012 · 17/11/2021 19:27

@MrsLargeEmbodied

i would suggest 10 pm is a time to sleep, sleep is medicine
What the heck are you talking about? If you're in a lot of pain it's very difficult to sleep! If sleep was medicine we wouldn't need prescriptions. Besides, that's definitely too early for my bedtime

Or just the OP at least
Flyinggeese1234 · 17/11/2021 19:30

@Malibuismysecrethome where do you get that info from? Never used?!

Malibuismysecrethome · 17/11/2021 19:31

Why don’t we all just give up going to doctors and hospitals and have a good nights sleep instead. Don’t forget natural remedies like gargling with salt and drinking honey and lemon. You can obvs cure yourself and no need to trouble the NHS.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHaands · 17/11/2021 19:48

Hope OP is ok. No update

Are you serious?!
TomRaider · 17/11/2021 20:00

When our youngest was 11months old we spend an anxious few days in hospital with him.

We then waited from Friday to Monday to be discharged. Whilst incredibly frustrating and annoying to Mrs Raider. I took the view that I want to be the lowest priority, the least concerning to staff etc.

Turned out that over the weekend there had been a bad crash involving a minibus carrying children and the staff at the hosi were tied up with several complex surgery cases resulting all weekend. When we walked out on the Monday we felt very lucky despite spending a weekend sat in a children's hospital and spending £75 on parking.

Not sure I'd be going to hosi or out of hours go with tonsillitis, but then I walked around on a broken ankle for a week and spend 3days with a splinter in my eyeball beforw getting them looked at

Geogaddi · 17/11/2021 20:05

Are you sure they didn't mean scottish tablet? That's a sugary fudge like sweet. Just get them that instead. The 4 year old will love it.

Geogaddi · 17/11/2021 20:06

gah, completely wrong thread, apologies, ignore that last msg. x

IhatePandO · 17/11/2021 20:06

Where have all the GP appointments gone ?? No one can get one, they are missing in action. It's simple, there are only so many GPs in the country so where are they.......Push Doctor and Private GP offerings.

Not A&e and tonsillitis can make you extremely unwell v quickly. Last time I had a bad dose, I got sent to A&e and had a week in hospital with what had developed into a quinsy. I spent about four hours lying on the floor in A&e vomiting quietly whilst waiting and then had sharp implements jabbed into my throat everyday for a week.
ThePoisonousMushroom · 17/11/2021 20:19

You’re saying that although it’s a badge of honour, but actually it’s really very foolish. You could have lost your sight.

Miisty · 17/11/2021 20:23

Felt so sorry for you .Talk to your GP they will prescribe antibiotics over the phone .This happened to my daughter she ended up fainting in front of them one way of jumping the que

Cab65 · 17/11/2021 20:24

Last year I spent seven hours waiting in A&E with what was finally diagnosed as a ruptured appendix, the surgeon stayed on to operate and it was a very close call.
