AIBU to expect DH to be discreet about his bodily functions when we stay with friends?

Yes I toot in bed, so does DH, but when he’s in the bathroom at home or when we are staying away, he totally lets rip, adding in accompanying grunts to emphasize how much effort he is putting in. Everyone hears him. It’s unavoidable. Friends, felllow guests and family all comment, not always with a laugh. AIBU to expect him to exert a little discretion (no euphemism intended)?

It can be painful as fuck. The grunts can either be a result of straining or not being able to breathe for a few seconds and then doing it all in one go.

If he's otherwise decent, not an arsehole or going around embarrassing you on purpose it is what it is. He should go to his GP though to see if a change in medication or treatment would help for his own sake as well as his audience's.

Having read the update I think you are being very unreasonable, maybe he's in genuine pain and the noises can't be helped. If he doesn't do it in the bathroom where do you expect him to go.

Poor bloke

PingedPotato · 16/11/2021 12:44

Right so he has a long term condition causing this. In which case you are being unreasonable and should be supporting him not making him feel worse.

He has diverticulitis and you are complaining. That and dragging his problem into the public domain is awful. As someone who has no bowel and a stoma how do you think people like me feel? Oh, and when I was in hospital there were two people on my ward who were having sub total colectomys because of diverticulitis. 😡

What a lovely supportive wife you are

Is there any way of soundproofing the bathroom as it sounds like he may not be able to help it and TBH if you can't let rip in the privacy of your own bathroom, when can you? What about keeping a radio in there which he can turn on.

Failing that can you build him his own loo at the bottom of the garden where he can "trumpet" to his heart's content without bothering anyone.

On a more serious note I do wish the the U.K. housing stock was built with decent sound insulation and better room placement planning.

Feduptotheteeth · 16/11/2021 13:23

He doesn’t have a serious case of diverticulitis and I have it as well. Doesn’t affect me the same way but we’re all different. Given the latest posts I’ll put up and shut up when we’re staying with friends, same as I do at home…
