How do you celebrate your birthday?

Do you go out with friends/make a big thing of it, or have a small thing with family or just a cake etc?

I always think every year to get friends together or do something big, but I always think ‘Nah’ and just have cake, maybe a meal out/weekend away with Dp and toddler.
I’m wondering if I should make more effort and at least do a lunch with mum friends etc? I suppose I don’t love the spotlight on me really, but then see posts with people out for huge nights out or weekends away with a big group.

What do you generally do?

Nothing. But that's what I enjoy :)

SarahBellam · 15/11/2021 20:52

Meal out with DP and kids. No way could I be arsed with the faff of organising a party or big meal then having to talk to people all night.

Obsessedwithbluey · 15/11/2021 20:53

@SarahBellam 😅

Usually meal out with family and something else with DH and DD. Not usually anything with friends these days.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 15/11/2021 20:57

Me and DP usually go away for the night somewhere, this year me, DP and DD were away for the week that tied in with my birthday. I never make a big fuss with family, couldn't be bothered with it

galacticpixels · 15/11/2021 20:58

If it's just me and DP, we usually both take the day of our birthdays off work. We might go somewhere nice for the day for a walk, then order a takeaway in the evening. And we'll have cake.

If I happened to be visiting home I would have a small get together with my mother/siblings/nieces - pizza and cake generally.

My 30th is next year. I'm not having a party; DP and I are using as an excuse for a big holiday abroad.

Shoxfordian · 15/11/2021 20:59

Going out for brunch and drinks with friends then dh taking me to a spa hotel a few weeks after for the weekend

thewhatsit · 15/11/2021 21:00

I always have a cake but nothing much more than that.

Thursa · 15/11/2021 21:02

Go out for dinner with dh and kids.

ParkheadParadise · 15/11/2021 21:04

I have a large family so there is always cards, balloons and presents and my siblings like to go out to celebrate. I hate my birthdays.
Usually have a meal out with DH but now dd likes to make a fuss with a cake and singing Happy Birthday.

Immunetypegoblin · 15/11/2021 21:05

I just had a big birthday and made a bit of a fuss - a few different social events over a few days Smile otherwise, just a dinner with friends or something.

mamatoTails · 15/11/2021 21:06

On the actual day I usually go out with my mum, shopping, coffee etc. Then in the evening we all go out to dinner, me, dp, dcs and my parents.
Me and DP usually go to lunch or dinner over the weekend afterwards.
And my friends and I go for brunch for birthdays, group of 4 of us.

FangsForTheMemory · 15/11/2021 21:11

Under normal circumstances, with a holiday abroad: Venice, Florence, Nice, Avignon, Nile cruise, Vienna, Paris have all featured. Hoping to resume next year.

mouse70 · 15/11/2021 21:11

Nothing

StoneofDestiny · 15/11/2021 21:15

Always
Day out somewhere nice after opening goodies
Restaurant meal in evening with DH
Hotel Beak with DH for a few days

LeviOsaNotLeviosAR · 15/11/2021 21:15

Usually a night out to the pub locally with friends/family on the weekend of my or my DH's birthdays. Takeaway or a meal out either together or with parents on the day.

Never bother with birthday cake as we usually have 1 slice each and the majority of the cake gets binned so feel its a waste.

YesIamTHATmum · 15/11/2021 21:15

I don't. I am now of the age where I really don't want to have a birthday,

Doublechins · 15/11/2021 21:18

This year I'm working so I won't see family or friends on the day (well except for DH when I get home but that will be bout 9.30. DC will be in bed)

Usually go for a meal with family on the day and a night out with friends on the weekend.

Justcannotbearsed · 15/11/2021 21:27

We don’t have kids. This birthday going out with DH and a friend and her partner. Her birthday last weekend I went round to her house with couple of girlfriends for pizza as her partner was working the weekend.

I have also been away for weekends somewhere warm with friends.

Sometimes just a meal with dh.

But always something out.

tsmainsqueeze · 15/11/2021 21:27

I go out for a meal with my best friend a day or so before , always book day off if it falls on a work day .
I have no expectations at all so i am not disappointed , it is very near bonfire night so usually a fire involved with family ,and even though at i don't care much about my own birthday anymore i usually end up enjoying the day .

Notdoingthis · 15/11/2021 21:29

Usually I do nothing as it is January. This time I am taking my 8yo and 6yo to see a musical!

MondeoFan · 15/11/2021 21:30

Normally a meal out or takeaway with DH and kids.
Don't ask friends as don't think anyone would come
I have a big birthday next year - hoping to go abroad for it

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 15/11/2021 21:31

It depends really, some years I seem to do loads and others not so much, it being in lockdown last year didn't bother me.

It's actually my birthday this weekend and me and DP are going away on Friday night, then on Saturday it's the local Xmas light switch on and we might end up going and meeting up with friends then going for a drink after but will see what time we are home from the night away, then on Sunday we are going for lunch with my parents.

notacooldad · 15/11/2021 21:32

I usually have a night out with my friends. We go out for a meal.
I also have a night out with both son's and their girlfriends and Dh.
I also go out for lunch and do a different activity each year with a friend.

UnsuitableHat · 15/11/2021 21:33

Enjoy my birthday and milk it for what it's worth. I like to use it as an opportunity to get people together & normally try to arrange a few things. Had a big birthday last year when the 'rule of 6' was in place so managed to draw it out with lots of little gatherings.
