i wateched him make risotto late last night, i have seen a few of his programs and have always wondered is it worth all that time and effort.
is he not just a short, bald, over considered tosser ( may be a bit harsh but you get my point)

it will take you two weeks and cost you £43 in ingredients Pud

Kathyate6mincepies · 14/12/2007 11:02

(because I never get to play with my blowtorch. I started a thread once about what else I could do with it and all I got were facetious or obscene suggestions )

EricScrooge · 14/12/2007 11:10

I agree. Some of these Chefs forget who they are meant to be talking to.

Just us normal heathen folk in kitchens with equipment like a cooker and microwave - not the latest in food technology.

Some of the ingredients they use are laughable.

But, on the other hand, i very rarely try to make anything i see off the telly - so i guess i should just view it as entertainment and not some jumped-up tosser who has disappeared up his own arsehole in a cloud of pomegranate mousse jus many years ago.

MyEye · 14/12/2007 11:11

Oh, I can't bear this show. I'm sure he's a nice enough chap and one of the finest chefs in the known universe, but he's dire on telly, not a natural communicator. If the show was less selfconscious and a bit more OU-ish, I'd probably love it. As it is, with all the groovy graphics/international jetsettery/swivelling egg chairs, you just think, 'Oh get a life you sad little man'.
I heard him on r2 the other day and he seemed a bit... boring and dull. I bet he says things like, 'I'm mad, me!' and wears jokey bowties at Christmas.

SantasSmartArse · 14/12/2007 11:19

Bloody hell, Lapin, not only are you Santa disguised as a bunny, but you can also cook! Your recipes sound AMAZING! (I thought I was quite a good cook, but I'm feeling a tad inferior now ).

I like Heston Bloomers - I want to stroke his bald head!

TenLordsaLapin · 14/12/2007 11:47

shuuudddddup, these are not complicated things at all. You could do them no sweat.

I am, however, rubbish at cooking rice. I have no idea why, I do exactly what DH does, but his always comes out perfect and mine clumps. Rice hates me.

Kathyate6mincepies · 14/12/2007 11:49

Same in our house. Perhaps it is female hormones. We should get Heston to test.

pud1 · 14/12/2007 11:51

see he is an over considered little prick ( or at least MyEye agrees). he did say that using 3 rices in a risotto was radical. dont like the music on the show either

( getting brave as some people are agreeing with me)

I heart Hesty.

We have both his books and dh has made quite a lot of the recipes, all really really good. I couldn't be arsed, like to make things quickly, but they really are fab. Have also eaten at his restaurant which was v. memorable.

I like the fact he's obviously barking passionate.

Kathyate6mincepies · 14/12/2007 12:12

Mumblechum has your dp actually made stuff from the Perfection books? Do tell us more!!!

Elffriend · 14/12/2007 12:30

I don't think WTF is an unreasonable response as such -I did watch the risotto programme and thought, "you are barking mate". BUT, I think it is really refreshing to see someone with a very different approach and who is clearly so passionate about trying to understand WHY food works and what would enhance it etc. etc. I agree completely that Jamie Oliver's recipe is waaaay easier (like anyone else would ever do risotto the Hesty way) and it is delicious- but then Jamie doesn't have a zillion michelin stars either. You need people on the edge of stuff otherwise we will constantly stuck with the same old same old. Think of him as modern art! Besides - his food DOES taste amazing. So not unreasonable - but I don't agree!

Kathyate6mincepies · 14/12/2007 12:35

I agree Elffriend. I love him but I also think WTF.

In fact, I think Heston fans and haters alike can all unite in a chorus of WTFs.

upallnightagain · 14/12/2007 12:48

I agree with the above about Hestons tv show...but I dislike any cooking programmes !! However I was lucky enough to go his restuarant ( fat duck ) about 2 yrs ago and it was amazing !! The food was gorgeous , although obviously unconventional and the service was also fabulous. Very expensive but worth it ....!

mumblechum · 14/12/2007 12:49

Katy, he's made the pizzas which were the best I've ever tasted, inc. lots in Italy. Has also made the burgers (we cheated & used bought ciabatta buns), and frequently does the roast chicken & spuds which are dead easy.

For Xmas, dh is making the peking duck & some sort of pud from the latest Hesty book.

Kathyate6mincepies · 14/12/2007 12:53

yum yum yum!

Did he do the thing where you get the fibres of the meat lying in the right direction?

mumblechum · 14/12/2007 13:05

Oh yes. He has a "Be Like Hesty " Kenwood Major and bought the mincing attachment specially. It'll now sit in a cupboard for the next 10 years.

Kathyate6mincepies · 14/12/2007 13:06

Ah well there are worse gadgets to spend money on

Xywhisty · 14/12/2007 13:14

I've watched the Peking Duck and Chilli con carne episode with DS 12yrs.
It is interesting and really don't think we are supposed to repeat the same at home, although DS wanted me to have ago at the chilli the next day!

Oblomov · 14/12/2007 14:54

mumblechum's dh IS Hesty.
Ooooohhh what a lovely thought.
AND he has all the attachments !!!!!!
