Rather than those that wrap over the phone?

To make the phones look nicer I suppose. I also have a wee popper or ring that sticks on the back of the case to make it easier to hold esp when taking photos/selfies.

Flavabobble · 15/11/2021 08:52

They protect the edging and corners when you drop it, yet you can use it more conveniently

onlychildhamster · 15/11/2021 08:52

I wanted a pink phone but couldn't find one so I bought a pink phone case for my Xiaomi phone. I don't like the leather ones that wrap around the phone, my DH's one is really manky.

I am not too precious about my phone which cost me £139.

HeddaGarbled · 15/11/2021 08:53

There’s a bumper round the front edges which provides some level of protection to the screen if you drop it. I have one. It’s easier to use the phone and it’s easier to fit in small pockets.

audweb · 15/11/2021 08:55

Mine protects it if it falls as it lands on the edges and not on the screen itself, and is far easier to use that one that has a cover. I have dropped my phone many times as it’s fine.

PuppyMonkey · 15/11/2021 08:57

I hate the leather ones that wrap around, having to open the cover up like a book. Naffola imho.Grin

Gandalf456 · 15/11/2021 08:57

How good are screen protectors in comparison to a case?

OP posts:
NoSquirrels · 15/11/2021 08:57

If you want to use your phone as it was designed - easy access to screen, non-bulky - but you also want a level of protection if dropped, then they’re ideal, obviously.

ThinWomansBrain · 15/11/2021 08:58

they offer a degree of protection without getting in the way of answering phone? Use mine in conjunction with a glass screen protector.

Also covers up gaudy colour of phone
Still in love with the original motorola razr though - such an excellent design.

Sirzy · 15/11/2021 08:59

It protects the back and makes it much less likely that the corners will be hit which is where a lot of smashes come from.

I have a case and screen protector and touch wood it does the job well

Bagelsandbrie · 15/11/2021 09:01

Screen protectors are a waste of time. People think they work because if you drop your phone they smash and the phone stays okay but the glass on an iPhone is much, much stronger than a screen protector will ever be so chances are the screen wouldn’t have broken anyway, even without the protector. It’s just a thing to keep people buying them!

If you get a decent case with higher sides / good impact protection that’s the best you can do.

StrawberrySquash · 15/11/2021 09:03

Mine does a pretty good job of protecting mine. Not smashed yet - although my last phone but one did eventually crack. But then I drop my phone a lot. Yes, it doesn't stop the screen getting scratched, but I'm good about not putting it in my pocket with keys or whatever and my screen is in decent nick. I have used screen protectors in the past, but am not a huge fan. It's about balancing risks for me vs bulky case.

I have a clear cover for the back of my phone and a screen protector. I've just removed the tempered glass screen protector to replace it because it was so cracked. The phone screen underneath was in perfect condition. I would say that screen protectors are very good.
HoardingSamphireSaurus · 15/11/2021 09:08

I need the addition of the screen protector. It isn't about it smashing, its about scratches. I use mine for work, as in I run my business on it, and that means taking lots of pictures. I have to see the screen. So I use screen protectors. I change them once or twice a year. I've seen unprotected screens and whilst they are OK for calls they'd be useless to me. My job also includes lots of keys and sometimes I run out of hands and pockets!

So I use a rubbery bumper case and a good screen protector. Ugly but easy to use!

I did wonder if this was true too, but I drop my phone a lot and the screen protector makes me feel better.

I destroyed the screen on a kindle paperwhite once despite the cover, so I'm wary of screens breaking.

Only if you think books are naff. Which Hmm
Chersfrozenface · 15/11/2021 09:18

I usually have mine in a fake leather case for more protection. However, if I'm using a smaller shoulder bag that case is too bulky, so I swap it for a plastic back-and-edge one which takes up less space and gives at least some protection.

girlmom21 · 15/11/2021 09:19

All of the newer iPhones (I don't know about other brands) have glass backs that are like £500 to repair.

MsRedhook · 15/11/2021 09:20

I always get OtterBox Defend covers. They look fairly sleek and wrap around the whole phone. They give very good protection. There's no flip cover, it's just a casing.

EileenGC · 15/11/2021 09:23

I’ve never broken my phone with a back cover only, as opposed to adding a screen protector and/or full cover.

I drop it ALL the time (3 times already this morning, twice on the hard pavement) and I don’t know why, but it never smashes with the cover I have. The last time I put a screen protector on it, it didn’t last over two weeks before a corner was completely destroyed.

I’m not tempting fate Grin

Rollercoaster1920 · 15/11/2021 09:31

Phones are almost designed to be slippery, so the silicone covers add impact resistance and also more grip.

I'd be happy for high end phone specs in a plastic case. Would save costs because I'm only going to put it in a silicon gel cover anyway.

Tragicroundabout · 15/11/2021 10:27

I have a case that protects the back and sides and also fit a tempered glass screen protector. I've replaced a few of the protectors when they've been damaged or cracked and the screen underneath is completely unmarked.

ImNotCrazyIWasTested · 15/11/2021 10:42

I have this 1 which doesn't look like the standard full case but offers great protection

After my last phone died (got murdered by my clumsiness, I broke the front and back glass paid £350 to get them repaired only to miss my pocket outside the shop and shattered both again) I knew I had to make sure this 1 was bomb proof as so far it is!

RandomLondoner · 15/11/2021 10:50

I choose phone cases for their grip. In the past I've gone for ones with a rubberised coating, current one is hard plastic but with texture.

They do protect corners and back as well. (Why the fuck did any maker think it was a good ideal to give phones glass backs?)

I'm amazed to see people on this thread thinking screen protectors help you if you drop your phone. They are there to prevent scratches when your phone is in a bag with other hard objects. I suppose they could prevent a scratch if the phone skids along the pavement after being dropped, but it sounds like some people think they will stop the glass from cracking.

Same here, they were recommended to me. Dropped my phone onto the pavement from waist height and no damage at all. Expensive but worth it.
