To think The Queen should retire?

ThinWomansBrain · 14/11/2021 21:09

I am not a monarchist - but given that we have a Royal Family....
Given her age, understandably failing health, and the recent widowhood, is it be reasonable to think the Queen should step down and retire gracefully?
OK, maybe stay in post until the Jubillee next year, but then hand over.

@EdithWeston

To abdicate is the same as retiring, so she can retire (abdicate)

It's not quite.

Abdication means ceasing to be monarch . Retiring does not have to mean that, as the installation of a Regent would achieve the same purpose. There is good precent for that - George III's reign was known as the Regency because it was happening then as he was unfit to carry out the role on medical grounds, but was still king.

Not the whole of George III's reign. He acceded in 1760, but the Regency didn't start till 1811.
Pixxie7 · 15/11/2021 03:08

Prince Charles birthright is to become king why should he give that up.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 15/11/2021 03:20

She’s not going to retire.

She’s not going to abdicate.

People can think she should all they want.

But she won’t.

Make your peace with it.

1forAll74 · 15/11/2021 03:28

she has probably bought all her Christmas presents now, and wrapped them all up, and decorated all the rooms at Windsor, Stop writing her off,, she likes Christmas.. I did read,that she was riding a pony a couple of weeks ago, and not her usual larger horse,

SomeFineDay · 15/11/2021 03:31

@UndertheCedartree

Queens don’t “retire” though. Even if she retires from all appearances and duties from now on she won’t have retired from the position of being Queen. That’s abdication. William and Kate and Charles will just do more stuff.

ilovesooty · 15/11/2021 03:33

@Gingerkittykat

I can't imagine Charles really wants to start being king at the age of 73. He probably just wants to retire to potter round his gardens. The throne should pass directly to William if anyone has any sense

Yup, because we really need an adulterer with a geography degree as our head of state.

It's time to abolish the monarchy completely.

His degree is in History.

A geography degree ? I'm not sure that you need a degree to be the monarch . You know that the Queen never went to school at all ? And somehow she has managed to do a sterling job for 70 years .

And as for the adultery of PC, I'm pretty sure that many of our previous monarchs were in that category and still did a good job. One doesn't preclude the other.

Snoozer11 · 15/11/2021 04:15

@ilovesooty @starrynight21 I think they were accusing William of adultery there...

@Marcipex

Of course it’s a sombre event, but I agree that the royals did look very grim on the whole. Kate was very pinched and pale, Sophie looked deeply unhappy. Even Anne, such a stalwart, seemed crushed. They are all obviously very worried.
Perhaps they were cold?

And has anyone ever seen Princess Anne smiling? My DH's gran has a picture of the two of them arguing with each other at some ribbon-cutting; it's pride of place in her hallway 😂

Werehamster · 15/11/2021 04:46

To be fair, the Royal family did all look ashen-faced. It's a somber event, but they all looked very upset. I don't know if they were just worried about the Queen or if it's something else, but you can see it looking at the photos.

Nat6999 · 15/11/2021 04:52

I did wonder if she was dying after seeing Prince Charles at the Cenotaph & Kate on the balcony, both looked tired & tearful, like you would when a loved one is dying.

garlictwist · 15/11/2021 05:01

What would "they" have to gain by hushing up her death? They just wouldn't.

PurBal · 15/11/2021 05:06

She has been anointed monarch and she takes her coronation vows seriously. You can’t step down from something like that.

coodawoodashooda · 15/11/2021 05:11

@monkeysox

I think she has died and they haven't told us. They didn't tell us she'd been in hospital....
I think that too.
MsPorridge · 15/11/2021 05:47

I'm not from the UK so I know very little about the RF. I have just seen the pictures some of you are referring to and they are indeed crying. Does this happen every year that they appear tearful? Is this unusual?

No, usually they are solemn and dignified. Yesterday they were dignified and distraught. We watched it live and were struck by it.

FWIW I think the Queen is very ill and they are not announcing it yet. Whatever it is, I do hope she is resting and having a good gin and tonic.

Hebditch · 15/11/2021 06:03

The devastation the abdication of Edward VIII caused is exactly why she will never abdicate. The Queen pledged, on her 21st birthday, in a radio broadcast, that her entire life “be it long or short” would be dedicated to the service of the nation. She is a truly remarkable woman.

User5632986 · 15/11/2021 06:12

She is probably quite ill apart from the back injury so should pass on her duties to other appropriate family members and just do the occasional Zoom call

No, it's not unusual.

There's a considerable amount of confirmation bias going on.

Also, as the monarchy is more important than the monarch, there is n way news of a death would be suppressed. There will be a short interval, whilst those who need to be informed directly are informed, then the pre-prepared messages to the wider 'need to know' community are sent (which includes major broadcasters) with an embargo time - that time being the one of the public announcement.

It'll be a few hours only

The British have never gone in for the concealing the death, or keeping a deceased leader on ice. It's not going to start now.

MsPorridge · 15/11/2021 06:14

@WinterFirTree Thanks. I also thought appearing so distraught had to be something a lot more personal and closer to them.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/11/2021 06:23

First Remembrance Sunday without Prince Philip. HMQ unable to attend, which is very unusual. Even if she does just have a back sprain, it's natural the rest of the family would be upset by their loss this year and the thought of what will eventually come.

At her age she can decide for herself. She doesn't want to though. Plus she's not going to live for many years so just let her be.
romatheroamer · 15/11/2021 06:40

I agree with pps that the family members did look particularly strained and tearful at the ceremony so wondering if they know something about her health that hasn't been announced yet.

TasteTheMeatNotTheHeat · 15/11/2021 06:42

I voted YABU because it's up to her. If she didn't want the job anymore, and wanted to relax for however long she has left, she would be perfectly able to do so. She chooses to continue.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 15/11/2021 06:45

The comments re speculation over the death of a 95 year old are ridiculous. This isn’t great Granny Susan from across the road; it’s the Queen! Her death will cause huge changes in everyone’s lives. Of course it’s reasonable to speculate about it. It’s not like everyone is rubbing their hands together! I am a massive royalist and I agree with @DuchessOfDisaster , I do think there’s a chance she has died. We won’t find out immediately; I read somewhere it will be days before we do due to the enormous amounts of planning that go into the aftermath.
