To think The Queen should retire?

ThinWomansBrain · 14/11/2021 21:09

I am not a monarchist - but given that we have a Royal Family....
Given her age, understandably failing health, and the recent widowhood, is it be reasonable to think the Queen should step down and retire gracefully?
OK, maybe stay in post until the Jubillee next year, but then hand over.

@Herani

It did cross my mind too that she may have died already but the family/her wishes wouldn’t be to upstage the remembrance celebrations today. The family seemed to look extremely sad and tearful today; I know it was a somber occasion but they looked much more strained than other years. However, I err on the side of thinking they know she’s unfortunately on her way out. I’m not a royalist, but she is an amazing woman.
I noticed that too. I saw photos on the Cambridges' instagram and Kate looked very pinched and sombre, like she had been crying.

To be fair, it's probably her sense of duty that's kept her going this long. My dad was the same. Kept going right up until the last moment. Had he retired at 60 and put his feet up, he would never have made it to 83.

HarrisonStickle · 14/11/2021 22:30

Bollocks. She was riding horse’s a few months ago, I think her health, for her age, is amazing. I’m no royalist and she is 95 but I don’t think she’s at deaths door yet.

Maybe. My father's about her age. Three months ago he had quite a full and active life. He's now a frail old man who sleeps in his chair all day, needs help getting in and out of bed, and uses sticks to get around.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 14/11/2021 22:31

My grandmother is the same age as the queen and recently came out of hospital after breaking her knee (came home a week ago) and I chatted to her for over an hour. She’s frail but mentally able and frustrated her body is letting her down. She doesn’t seem close to death. Just because a 95 year old has been in hospital and is unwell doesn’t mean death is imminent.

@AngelicaElizaAndPeggy

Is it possible to retire from active duties but still remain head of state though? So you don't abdicate, you just deactivate slightly but remain in place.
Deactivate slightly does sound like she is Robo-Queen!

@SerendipitousEmma

Did anyone else think that Charles looked really sad at the Remembrance ceremony today?
Do you know what Remembrance Day is for?
Viviennemary · 14/11/2021 22:33

She won't. She took her coronation vows to serve till death and thats what she is doing.

Yes, I thought he looked very teary. Probably remembering his dad.

It’s the first Remembrance Day after losing their father/grandfather who was in the forces.

Camilla probably forgot his birthday.

No, but I thought he needed a haircut

@HalfCakeHalfBiscuit

Youre pulling my leg right?

TannyFickler · 14/11/2021 22:43

I thought it was a bit of a brave move to produce all those new banknotes with her face. I would have hung on a bit…

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 14/11/2021 22:43

Of course she hasn’t died. I know she’s the Queen and I’m no monarchist but she’s still human with a family who love her so I think some of the posts are in poor taste. That said she is clearly becoming more frail and has recently lost a long term spouse which must have been devastating both mentally and physically. I don’t know what state I’d be in if I lost DH and I’m less than half her age.

On another note, Andrew must be very concerned as she’s one of the only things keeping him out of an American court.

TatianaBis · 14/11/2021 22:47

It’s up to her. She might get very bored watching daytime TV with her corgis.

BubbleCoffee · 14/11/2021 22:47

The tradition and expectation is that you don't abdicate. I think she will keep going.

SarahAndQuack · 14/11/2021 22:50

It never ceases to amaze me that people who are in support of the monarchy feel it's perfectly ok to comment or make statements on the health of a 90-something woman they've never met. Saying 'our lovely queen' doesn't make it ok.

I am not remotely interested in the monarchy continuing and I very much hope it doesn't, but I have enough basic human decency to think it's not ok to talk about whether or not an elderly person is dying, how they feel about their job, or anything else.

Just nasty.

Rewis · 14/11/2021 22:50

I don't think she should abdicate or retire. Im all for her distributing her a lot of her duties to Charles/Anne/Edward/William.

Obviously of she chooses to abdicate, I wouldn't hold it against her. But I think for her thia is a for life job.

UndertheCedartree · 14/11/2021 22:56

@Cocomarine - I've never watched the Crown. I think my idea of her sense of duty probably comes from things my parents and grandparents said in the past. I'm pretty sure that part of it was around the abdication of her uncle which was highly upsetting to her family.

TheFairyCaravan · 14/11/2021 22:56

How many times was Prince Phillip declared dead before he actually did die?

I think it’s horrible to speculate that a woman is dead. What would the Royal Family gain from that? People need to get a grip. The Queen is old, we all know that, but when the time comes we’ll find out.

BrilliantBetty · 14/11/2021 22:57

Hope she gets some peace and relaxation, time with family etc. And lets the younger ones do all the 'things'.
She should live the rest of her life away from the public if she wants to.

BelindaBumcrack · 14/11/2021 22:57

It has been reported many times that she won't abdicate and will serve as Queen until she dies, which she sees as her duty. No one can quote her as she doesn't give interviews though.

She's 95. She's allowed the odd day off sick to rest and recuperate.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2021 22:58

All this speculation is really nasty.

AdoptedBumpkin · 14/11/2021 23:00

I kind of agree due to her age and health, but she's too committed to the role to do so.

PieMistee · 14/11/2021 23:00

I blame Meghan.
