I have a craft fair in 1 week so doing some last minute bits. I have never done one before. How much would you pay for this toy for a cat? It's a catnip teabag toy

Might just sell as a sachet of catnip instead Grin

I wouldn’t buy that catnip. The pieces are too big. My cat snorts, licks and eats the stuff, so she would get those large pieces stuck in her throat. I buy the really finely ground cat nip. I would buy it if it was ground with no twigs in it. But I wouldn’t buy the toy for same reasons as previous posters.

Overthebow · 14/11/2021 15:57

Looks dangerous I wouldn’t buy it. Could you make Christmas themed fabric kickers? They might sell better.

Whinge · 14/11/2021 15:59

Sorry OP I agree with the majority and wouldn't buy it. I would also be concerned about the risk to cats and the potential for an emergency vets visit.

I don't think you should sell them. Not as a toy, or as a sachet of catnip as you could be putting pet's lives at risk.

Coconutscrub · 14/11/2021 16:02

Yes sorry I don’t think you should be selling this or making any other cats toys until you’ve done some proper research.

1forAll74 · 14/11/2021 16:03

Nothing, I make my own cat toys for my three cats, I couldn't believe the vast array of rubbish cat toys, and the price of them, when seeing them on the shelves at a Pets at Home store. I just brought a thin long twig from a tree into the house, and one of my cats is playing with it, chucking it about and pawing it, and running after it if he flips it the air. One of the other cats will play with it too, when he comes in from outside.. They are all adult cats, not kittens.

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 14/11/2021 16:11

I will not be selling them based on the feedback. Thanks all so much I will use the "teabag" sashet inside a fluffy mouse toy instead.
I am doing Xmas kickers here is a normal one

Op - I used to make catnip bags with double layered calico and very strong thread. They lasted quite well. Put some cat safe stuffing in as well as catnip and they'll be very happy. Not pretty, but practical and strong.

10yearwarranty · 14/11/2021 16:16

I'm trying to work out what a kicker is...

Whinge · 14/11/2021 16:18

Sorry OP but plastic feathers on a toy are also a big no no for me.

I'm slighly worried you haven't done any basic research, your products could put pet's lives at risk.

icedcoffees · 14/11/2021 16:22

Eeek.

Sorry OP, but I wouldn't buy those either. Feathers are fine on flirt poles where the human is there to control the play and remove the toy after, but kickers are designed for the cats to "entertain themselves" with as such and the plastic feathers aren't really safe.

You've posted a lot of these threads asking bout cat collars and other goods you've made, but you don't seem to have done a huge amount of research into the safety of what you're making, which worries me.

I hope you have good insurance - both product and public liability.

I'm trying to work out what a kicker is...
Cats "hold" it in their front paws and use their back legs to kick it :)
LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 14/11/2021 16:26

This is the first and only one I've made up. Its easy enough to not add the Feathers. I really do think I need to research more, this is also a good form of research i belive and do appreciate all posts and replies.

LaLaLaOh · 14/11/2021 16:26

I wouldn’t buy the first one at all. My cat eat and chews everything. She’d rip that bag open in seconds and then I’d be worried about her eating the rope attached to the bag and choking. She’d probably have a good go at eating the chewed open bag too. I can’t leave anything around her.

I think I paid around £4 for my last kicker from Pets at Home. I hate to say it but I agree with other posters that I wouldn’t buy that one either. My cat grooms feathers and everything fluffy until they become bitty and get stuck in her mouth.

icedcoffees · 14/11/2021 16:33

Personally I don't buy things like this at random craft fairs because I don't know anything about the quality or safety of the goods.

Whereas if I buy from a local pet shop (or even PaH) I know I can return a collar or harness if it breaks, doesn't know what it's supposed to do, or causes an injury or issue with my pet.

OP what other products have you made and do you have insurance?
Mymilk · 14/11/2021 16:34

Yeah sorry but I wouldn't consider that a "toy" - it's a (very minimal) bag of catnip that any ordinary cat would destroy in seconds. You could sell it as just a bag of catnip but you'd need to price it incredibly low, as other posters say you can buy much bigger bags of catnip for a fairly low price.

Aprilx · 14/11/2021 16:38

£0.

I also think it looks dangerous, the catnip is supposed to be well hidden within a toy, not in a flimsy bag like that.

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 14/11/2021 16:43

Yes I do have insurance both product and liability. I make dog collars and leads, and jumpers also dog and cat beds. I buy in cat collars with safety release buckles and will be clear that I have not made them. Here are some of the cat beds/mats some are for a windowsill.

I would absolutely not buy that organza bag, or the kicker with plastic feathers for my cat. I would be very reluctant to consider knitted/crochet things for a cat, as they'd get claws stuck and potentially could fall off a windowsill whilst tangled up.

OP, while you clearly have some skills with sewing/knitting etc, I think you need to do some proper research about what is suitable for cats if you're going to sell cat things. If you can knit/crochet, why don't you just knit scarves/cushions/blankets/coasters that don't have these concerns?

PussyCatEatingPigsInBlankets · 14/11/2021 16:51

@LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer In the nicest possible way, I really think you should stick to making stuff for dogs. You can test drive them yourself then.
The window beds/mats wouldn't stay in the window...I've tried with a fleecy blanket and you need something with non-slip bobbly fabric to give it some grip.

ShinyMe · 14/11/2021 16:52

Another down point for crochet things for cats is that they're not generally easily washable, and they will get clogged up with cat hair.

LaLaLaOh · 14/11/2021 16:53

I think the first two window things are okay, although not something I would personally buy for my cat as we have a window bed for her that sticks on the window.

The knitted things I wouldn’t buy. Anything to lie on/that is soft my cat kneads and has her claws out to do this. I think knitted fabric would be ruined within a week. Not to mention the possibility of her getting her claws stuck in it.

icedcoffees · 14/11/2021 16:54

How will any of those beds stay in place when the cats jump up onto them?
