AIBU to want to buy a birthday card in November?

Because Tesco obviously think so. I'll admit I've left getting a card for DS's friends birthday til the last minute, but I do the weekly shop on a Sunday, so knew I'd get something in Tesco before it is required tomorrow. Except, half the card area now has individual Christmas cards in and the majority of the rest were for specific relations or ages. There were about 15, mainly alcohol related ones, in the generic section.
So, AIBU, or are Tesco BU?

If there were 15 birthday cards that's probably fair enough as long as a few were generic enough

InTheLabyrinth · 14/11/2021 13:25

There wasnt really anything suitable. Alcohol, flowers, jokes about getting older. Nothing for a teen.

I agree with you. It's very frustrating. There should be a separate stand for christmas cards.

JADS · 14/11/2021 13:28

Yanbu. We have loads of family birthdays at this time of year - no cards, no non Christmas wrapping paper. It's a real pain!

BluebellsGreenbells · 14/11/2021 13:28

Same for Feb birthdays due to Valentine’s Day.

I’ve given up trying.

FourEyesGood · 14/11/2021 13:29

I had a similar experience when trying to buy a birthday-appropriate gift bag (or box) in Card Factory yesterday. Apart from one aimed at toddlers and one that mentioned booze, they were all Christmas-related.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 14/11/2021 13:33

It’s the same at every major event of the year. DH has to buy my birthday card in January otherwise to buy it in February means that it’s just Valentine’s Day cards. Trying to buy for my dad, DH (both March) or my mum (early April) mean that I have to go through Mother’s Day cards. It’s why I’ve mostly moved to online cards now, I like the cards from thortful and can usually find something on there.

YANBU. A fair number of family birthdays occur in December. It's even worse then.....

PurpleParrotfish · 14/11/2021 14:05

I hear you. Exact same experience trying to buy a birthday card suitable for a teenager and half the space taken up by Christmas cards. And it wasn’t even halfway through October.

bigbluebus · 14/11/2021 14:11

I've been grumbling about this for years. I need 7 birthday cards for November birthdays (including my DS). The selection reduces drastically from October. If anything I think they're a little later removing the birthday cards to put out Christmas cards this year in many places.

Soubriquet · 14/11/2021 14:12

My birthday is the 17th December. I’ve had many birthmas cards…

Literally Christmas cards with the word christmas scribbled out and birthday added on Hmm

My DHs birthday is the end of November and I have to remember to buy his birthday card in about September - then remember where I've hidden it! It's a right pain!

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 14/11/2021 14:27

I have a card box - just a shoebox and whenever I see cards I like through the year I buy them to fill it up - then when I have a birthday or something I just have a riffle through and pick something, saves that last minute scrabbling around if I've forgotten an occasion.

Having said that, I've never been in a shop that didn't at least have a few blank cards that could be used for a birthday, even at Christmas!

peboh · 14/11/2021 14:29

Yanbu, however supermarkets tend to do this every year. I've definitely struggled in the past if I'm not near a card shop.

TheCanyon · 14/11/2021 14:30

Went to Sainsbury's for dds card on thursday, plenty in stock

SpangoDweller · 14/11/2021 14:32

YANBU, I had the same recently in a large Morrisons which I don’t usually go to. Basically one card for each relationship but no generic happy birthday cards.

CallmeHendricks · 14/11/2021 14:32

I've often thought this, despite not knowing anyone (who I would send a card to) with a birthday in the run up to Christmas.
I think if I did, I would try to be organised enough to buy one ahead of time.

Cherrysoup · 14/11/2021 14:35

Drives me nuts, there are multiple December birthdays on both sides of the family. I get a card in the year and stick it in a drawer if I see something suitable.

HeyFloof · 14/11/2021 14:48

I realised yesterday I hadn't got enough wrapping paper and birthday cards for DS1 who is end of November birthday. He doesn't want minions with a santa hat on or sprout comedy paper Grin

Londonnight · 14/11/2021 14:56

I am a November birthday and it has always been like this, probably worse when I was younger. My mum used to buy our [ mine and my siblings all have November birthdays ] birthday cards in September so that we got some. At least now you can find birthday cards online, no chance in the 60's/70's.
Son's birthday is beginning of January, same problem.
It does seem that birthday's between November and February get forgotten and that mostly Christmas cards are available.

GracefulDroid · 14/11/2021 15:02

Have you tried homesense? I know it isn't the usual go-to for cards but they usually have a big selection and their Christmas cards seem to be kept on a different aisle or shelf. I got some good ones in there for teens recently

SavoyCabbage · 14/11/2021 15:02

This happened to me yesterday also in Tesco. I wanted either a daughter card or an 18 card and there were neither. But there were seven for same sex marriage.

I'm going to Sainsburys tomorrow.

Hoptoit1 · 14/11/2021 15:03

It's not just tesco unfortunately. I have 4 family birthdays in December and I always buy their cards in September because otherwise your left with inappropriate ones.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/11/2021 15:05

The Christmas cards begin to emerge before DH's birthday... in the middle of the summer holidays Confused

pigsDOfly · 14/11/2021 15:10

I had exactly this conversation with a woman in Tesco on Saturday - we were both looking for birthday cards without a lot of success.

I needed two cards one for someone in their early 40s and for someone mid 30s. Absolutely nothing suitable.

Fortunately, I've got a couple of weeks before the actual birthdays so shall look elsewhere.

Even a lot of specialist card shops seem to stop stocking birthday cards around Christmas time.

Very annoying.
