I have five sons. Me and DH are happy with our boys and have never wished for a girl etc.

MIL turned round to my youngest DS today and said "if only you was a girl..." referring to something girly she saw.

AIBU to be annoyed? My poor DS didn't know what to say back.

It is an awful thing to say under normal circumstances given your update it was more than awful, absolutely disgusting comments from Granny.
I'd have ask the DC to wait outside and ate her for breakfast.
I'm so sorry for your losses. Flowers

My husband has an older brother and his parents always talk about how they wanted a girl, in fact they were told he was a girl at their scan so the were disappointedwhen he was born. We now have two boys and if we ever talk about having a third child my husband sees it in terms of how badly do we want to try for a girl. I've explained you can't see it like that, if we have a third it's 50 50 and it's not like you can hand it back if it's a boy!

People are strange basically. But no she shouldn't have said that.

For the OP to correct her MIL's grammar would have been a perfectly appropriate response to a dimwit, insensitive comment -- I mean, engaging with the actual intent behind the comment would be just depressing.

But for all we know it could have been OPs grammar that was ‘wrong’ instead of or as well as the MILs ....posters are aware of that and pretending they’re not. 🙄

She shouldn't have said that to him..poor boy

Exactly. OP has explained it’s a regional accent so she probably says ‘you was’ too.

And yes, people here are pretending they haven’t seen that so they can keep indirectly sneering at OP.

But the OP's grammar, from what I remember, was perfectly standard apart from the quotation from her MIL, so I assumed it was a deliberate reportage of her MIL's remark. Which was incredibly unpleasant anyway, regardless of its phraseology.
