To think fake Marmites just aren't as nice?

I've tried the other yeast extracts... They're fine. But Marmite is better by far!

It's one of my few "only this exact one will do" things in life!

I actually now prefer the Aldi copy - it's much easier to spread on toast, tastes great and is a lot cheaper!

ApplesinmyPocket · 11/11/2021 18:41

Even though I grew up eating little else than marmite sandwiches (fussy - am not now!) I find actual Marmite a bit 'sharp' these days. The Tesco copy is mellower.

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/11/2021 18:41

YABVU indeed. During the great marmite shortage of 2020 I swapped to Morrison’s home brew and loved it. I can’t believe how much money we wasted on it for decades. I’ve now tried the Aldi and Asda ones and they’re all as good as each other.

clarkkentsglasses · 11/11/2021 18:45

Ah but do they do a dynamite version?

vampirethriller · 11/11/2021 18:45

Morrison's or Aldi is nicer! And easier to spread.

Iamanicepersonreally · 11/11/2021 18:47

I love Marmite. I tried the Sainsbury's own version once. Not a patch on the real thing.

topcat2014 · 11/11/2021 18:50

I prefer Aldi too as it is more spreadable!

ISpyCobraKai · 11/11/2021 18:50

Oh no, you need Marmite.
My Australian family say Vegemite is better, they are wrong Grin

FictionalCharacter · 11/11/2021 18:50

I didn’t even know there were own brands! Might try for dh, he eats loads and has no taste buds anyway

PicsInRed · 11/11/2021 18:52

I believe New Zealand has a renditions team for this sort of crime.

fixlet · 11/11/2021 18:54

I love the supermarket-own lower salt versions, especially Morrison's. As others have said, it's much easier to use, tastes good and is much cheaper. I have a spoonful in my scrambled eggs in the morning, and real Marmite is so hard to spoon in!

NotMyCat · 11/11/2021 18:57

The XO version is my absolute fave, I'm stocked up as my dad bought me 10 jars when there was a shortage BlushGrin

JennyDune · 11/11/2021 18:59

Imo, marmite is a fake sour version of bovril

Looubylou · 11/11/2021 19:04

I have had bad ones, but Asda own is very nice and easier to spread.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/11/2021 19:10

Absolutely.

I also tried the low salt one, just ended up using twice as much.

The Sainsburys one is much milder - OK to dollop into sauces, but just doesn’t work on toast.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 11/11/2021 19:13

Didn’t know there were own brand versions, there is only one Marmite, why risk it?!?

MintJulia · 11/11/2021 19:17

When I was redundant last year, we did some blind taste comparisons as a bit of fun (and to help cut costs).

We couldn't tell the difference with Marmite, strawberry jam, tomato ketchup, branded breakfast cereals, butter, .

it's not often I'd agree with the Aussies, but this time they're right. Vegemite is the best.
Chattercino · 11/11/2021 19:44

@Annonnimoouse42

We once ordered Marmite and got Vegemite substitute and it's now the firm favourite

willstarttomorrow · 11/11/2021 19:45

I have no loyalty and have happily eaten Aldi versions of things for years. But thank you for reminding me to buy marmite/copy to spread on some crumpets. Winter breakfast sent by the gods.

Annonnimoouse42 · 11/11/2021 19:47

Vegemite on toast, with butter is my comfort food. I scarred a French friend for life by giving her the tiniest bit, it's been 30 yrs and she still has flashbacks

Maverickess · 11/11/2021 19:49

I prefer the Sainsbury's own one, find real marmite a bit 'tangy' and Sainsbury's is cheaper (about half the price) and easier to wrangle onto a bit of toast 😁

dubious if the marmite tasted like strawberry jam AND tomato ketchup 🤣

The marmite "love it or hate it" thing - I'm neither, I get a craving for it around every three to five years - so next time I have a craving I'll look out for own brand marmite.

I've just googled what it's good for - B12 - the occasional cravings may have been when I was anaemic, had never checked out the logic of it before.

JennyDune · 11/11/2021 19:59

Marmite....yuck

Bovril...yum

Oh no ..that's the one I have right now. Its okaaaay, bit not as "sharp" as Marmite.
