To think fake Marmites just aren't as nice?

I've tried the other yeast extracts... They're fine. But Marmite is better by far!

It's one of my few "only this exact one will do" things in life!

@WowIlikereallyhateyou

Didn’t know there were own brand versions, there is only one Marmite, why risk it?!?
I thought (in a moment of madness) ... Oh maybe it will be nice? It's cheaper and it's just yeast extract, how bad can it be?

@JennyDune

Marmite....yuck

Bovril...yum

They're both good.

Vegemite all the way.

Marmite is... gloopy!

Longdistance · 11/11/2021 20:56

We buy Aldi’s own brand now, Marmite doesn’t get a look in. It has a Bovril consistency.
Vegemite is shite, hard like their TimTam biscuits.

...you're gloopy... They're completely different and can't be compared! (See also Bovril!) :p

I miss Marmite, had to give it up when I was diagnosed coeliac with a celery allergy

Now I’m stuck with a pricey alternative from the health food shop, it’s CJ ok but it’s not marmite

Jimmer253 · 11/11/2021 21:06

I am a complete marmite lover. On toast, in sandwiches, on crumpets. Love the crisps and the nuts etc …you get the gist.
Tried Aldi’s own version and have not looked back. It’s much easier to spread and has a slightly more mellow aftertaste, plus it’s cheaper! I won’t be going back to the original that’s for sure x

FatFredsFriedEgg · 11/11/2021 21:19

I think it may be an age thing. They changed the consistency of Marmite about 20--25(?) years ago.

The Marmite I was brought up on had a much more 'treacly' consistency than modern Marmite and a darker colour. The Asda and Tesco versions are much closer to what I had as a kid, although the Tesco one has seemed a bit too runny for the last year or so.

PooWillyNameChange · 11/11/2021 21:22

We bought Tesco's version when there was no marmite last year and are now hooked. It's easier to spread too.

00100001 · 11/11/2021 21:32

Well... who knew MN was full of heathens...

I prefer shop's own brand to Marmite. I like mine spread on toasted crumpets and melt cheese on top. Great in gravy too.

Longdistance · 11/11/2021 21:41

@FatFredsFriedEgg try Aldi’s own. My dh swears it’s like the ‘old Marmite’.

Old Marmite? Complete with my mum's manky butter lumps and toast crumbs then? Grin

I'd made a mental note to try Aldi's based on your previous post.

ZootSuit · 12/11/2021 22:27

@clarkkentsglasses the dynamite marmite is THE BEST!

Apparently, Tesco's and Aldi's yeast extracts are gluten free. Wouldn't bother with Sainsbury's, as that's reduced salt which is the whole point of the stuff.

Pity the local Tesco's only sells Marmite and I can't face going all the way to the big one on the offchance they've got it, especially as they've always been utter shite for stocking other GF stuff in that branch...I can't justify a whole online shop of things we can get round the corner just because I want this.

LakeFlyPie · 13/11/2021 20:09

Not so keen on Marmite but Vegemite is the business

CrowBones · 13/11/2021 20:36

Incorrect.

Marmite... yum

Bovril... yuck

Rosebel · 13/11/2021 21:05

I drive my husband mad because I insist on buying proper Marmite. It's the best. I also insist on Branston pickle.
Anything else I'm happy with the cheap version but I don't compromise on pickle or Marmite.

mrsbyers · 14/11/2021 23:17

Huge Aldi version fan here , doesn’t seize up in the way marmite can and tear my toast

Saracen · 15/11/2021 01:13

My teen likes all the ones she has tried. (I hate them all equally. Grin )

Since she isn't fussed, I doubt I'll buy Marmite again since discovering that the others are more spreadable. What a faff it was trying to distribute a nice small amount of Marmite properly over toast.

TuMeke · 15/11/2021 03:20

NZ Marmite (made by Sanitarium) is absolutely minging. It is confusing and upsetting in the mouth when you’re expecting it to taste like, you know, Marmite.
Vegemite is also available here, and is ok in an emergency. I keep a squeezy tube in my hiking kit in case of dehydration/muscle cramps. So more first aid than comestible, really.
Proper Marmite is the only truly acceptable option. We can only get the tiniest sized jars in the supermarkets here and it is horribly expensive, but I still insist on paying through the nose for the merest scrape of Marmite.

If anyone wants to send me one of the decent big jars, be my guest Grin

Ha. Came on to say the same! NZ Marmite is VILE. Proper UK Marmite is called 'mymate' for copyright purposes and comes in teeny jars for millions of $. Everyone is bemused by it here and believes it to be a fake/copy of the NZ version!

Heathens!

Last time I went to the UK I bought 6 MASSIVE jars of proper Marmite and brought them back. I had to declare them at biosecurity.

"Do you have any food?"
"Yes 6 kilos of Marmite"
She looked at me like Confused and sent me on my way.

PrincessNutella · 15/11/2021 05:19

Marmite tastes like something you'd scrape off the underside of a bench. How could it possibly get worse?

SpiceRat · 15/11/2021 05:22

Marmite hardly had any flavour compared to Aldi’s version. The proper chilli marmite was shite too, “dynamite” my arse i couldn’t even tell there was any heat in it.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 15/11/2021 05:23

£1 cheaper, easier to spread, tastes exactly the same, Aldi's all the way.
