Soaping the dishes instead of sponge

For years, I always wondered why the dish sponge in our kitchen often never had washing up liquid imbued in it / leftover. Usually you would expect always a little bit left over from prior wash/s.

I just found out today, that my partner (for 15 years) was been putting the liquid on the dishes instead of the sponge!

Firstly, im annoyed that I never spotted this. But more importantly, surely this is weird? Only a mad man would soap the dishes instead of the sponge?

For example, before I have a bath, I make sure I have a quick shower first

There's absolutely no need for this and if you google how soap works you'll see why.

NotMyCat · 11/11/2021 14:41

I do what @Greyeverywhere said, no bowl. Everything scrubbed with soap then rinsed under the tap
I'm a low water user, costs me about £19pm on a meter

Are you the same woman who didn’t want to neuter her cat?? You sound v similar...

AnCailleachOiche · 11/11/2021 14:56

As long as it gets the dishes clean it really doesn't matter.

vodkaredbullgirl · 11/11/2021 15:00

What's the obsession on how you do the washing up Smile

Flakes of skin, loose hair/s, fluff floating in the same water as me...no thanks!

@knittingaddict

I was taught how to wash up at school in the 70's, so I must be right.

Washing up bowl of hot water with washing up liquid in. Scrap off food. You then wash things in order, from cleanest to dirtiest:

Glasses.
Cutlery.
Plates and dishes.
Pots and pans.

No rinsing.

There's a special place in hell for those washing up in luke warm water.

Yep. Just how I was taught it in the Brownies in the late 70s.
lovescaca · 11/11/2021 15:07

I put it on the sponge

vodkaredbullgirl · 11/11/2021 15:10

Hmm Get a dishwasher problem solved.

Well sort of.

Seriously Hmm

You need to get your OCD under control.

BaconMassive · 11/11/2021 15:11

After every meal just throw the plates away and buy new ones.

Problem solved.

JennyDune · 11/11/2021 15:12

Using a washing up bowl..okay..but why not at least quick rinse afterwards? (This seems like a good balance/compromise)

Even better, paper plates Grin

But then again, the planet.

Jokes aside, at University halls, I actually did use paper plates for 1 year as the sink was always full and I couldnt be bothered to wash up.

It's your skin and hair that was previously on your body. It'll probably be barely visible. What do you think I'd going to happen to you?

JennyDune · 11/11/2021 15:14

@vodkaredbullgirl haha, i just saw your post right after posting my last message.

@Brusca

What?

You're both wrong.

The washing up liquid goes in the washing up water in the bowl/sink.

Yes!!!
inmyslippers · 11/11/2021 15:23

Soap in water, soapy sponge. Clean dishes and rinse off soapy water.

vodkaredbullgirl · 11/11/2021 15:23

I'm off to do last nights dishes, could have done it last night or this morning.

It makes me sad that someone who has children isn't thinking more about the environment that we are leaving for them...

Using water isnt the biggest environmental issue.

Tbf, with desalination plants powered by renewable energy, you can get unlimited clean water.

@madisonbridges

Washing dishes under running water is very wasteful. It's like leaving the water running whilst brushing your teeth.
Agree
Proudboomer · 11/11/2021 15:47

desalination Is not environmentally friendly. It takes a lot of energy to do so plus the brine removed changes salinity alkalinity and the temperature averages of the seawater and can cause change on marine habitat.

So I both purpose we funk up our oceans so you can’t have a shower before a bath and waste water running taps without need to cope with your weird germ fetish.

In (eg) Huddersfield? In 2021? Prob not.

Flakes of skin, loose hair/s, fluff floating in the same water as me...no thanks! Tomorrow's flakes of skin and loose hair will be in the bath with you, so what's the problem with having today's in there too?
