Soaping the dishes instead of sponge

JennyDune · 11/11/2021 00:27

For years, I always wondered why the dish sponge in our kitchen often never had washing up liquid imbued in it / leftover. Usually you would expect always a little bit left over from prior wash/s.

I just found out today, that my partner (for 15 years) was been putting the liquid on the dishes instead of the sponge!

Firstly, im annoyed that I never spotted this. But more importantly, surely this is weird? Only a mad man would soap the dishes instead of the sponge?

I'm also interested as to what people think goes in the water from a normal load of washing up?

I don't eat meat, I would be concerned about raw meat I suppose.

But other than that, what is the risk you perceive from your family's crockery and cutlery?

RacketeerRalph · 11/11/2021 08:00

Which is what we all do right...? Hmm

No.

dementedpixie · 11/11/2021 08:00

I don't rinse before washing. I scrape leftovers into the food bin

rrhuth · 11/11/2021 08:01

@bigbeachedwales yes quite but not just on MN, people like that are everywhere, they live in bubbles and don't know a wide range of people.

knittingaddict · 11/11/2021 08:01

@Brusca

What?

You're both wrong.

The washing up liquid goes in the washing up water in the bowl/sink.

This.

Very, very confused by the op. Shock

dementedpixie · 11/11/2021 08:02

@Helenahandbasketbing

You both have a really weird totally wrong method of washing up.

standing versus sitting to wipe your arse

Who the hell stands up to wipe their arse?! Surely the act of standing creates a clench situation? What if you have a clegnut (🤢) and it falls during movement??

I do. Well more of a raised squat I suppose
RaisinFlapjack · 11/11/2021 08:04

I appear to have been washing up incorrectly for my entire life...

No you are doing it perfectly correctly.

Running water only used if anything has lots of soapy suds after washing, or if anything needs a rinse prior to going in the bowl. For this reason you always need to use a washing up bowl OR have a double sink so there’s space to rinse water down the plug not into the bowl.

Change water as needed during the process, but by proceeding cleanest you dirtiest you minimise the need.

Metallicalover · 11/11/2021 08:08

@TirednWorried I'm another person who doesn't have a dishwasher and I don't want one.

knittingaddict · 11/11/2021 08:10

I was taught how to wash up at school in the 70's, so I must be right.

Washing up bowl of hot water with washing up liquid in. Scrap off food. You then wash things in order, from cleanest to dirtiest:

Glasses.
Cutlery.
Plates and dishes.
Pots and pans.

No rinsing.

There's a special place in hell for those washing up in luke warm water.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 11/11/2021 08:15

Wow this thread is mad! You fill a bowl of hot soapy water. Wash with a sponge. I always rinse my dishes first while the water heats up. Running water to wash dishes is disgustingly wasteful. I literally don't know of a single person who does this!

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 11/11/2021 08:17
@Bagelsandbrie a washable cloth. Mine gets changed daily. The sponge or cloth is proven to be an excellent germ breeding ground.
And yet my whole family (parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles and siblings on both mine and DPs side) of non dishwasher owners are all still alive and kicking

ThinWomansBrain · 11/11/2021 08:19

YABU you put the tablet in the dishwasher.

Lotusmonster · 11/11/2021 08:20

@XenoBitch

I have a dog. She does the prewash Grin
…mine does the final ‘shining’ before they go back in the cupboard! 😂
Horriblehalloween · 11/11/2021 08:21

Running warm water here too!

Lotusmonster · 11/11/2021 08:21

I’m trying….but I just can’t seem to get riled up over this issue today.

StrawberrySquash · 11/11/2021 08:26

Tap full on while you do a big load will obviously use a lot of water. But you can turn it to a trickle and turn it on and off as you wash and use a lot less. And it lets you rinse things that need it. Also it's more efficient than running a full sink if you only have a few things to do.

Greyeverywhere · 11/11/2021 08:45

@rrhuth they get rinsed under very hot water and they're not sat in grimy water. I dont get when peolel don't rinse the soap off the dishes it's disgusting

JennyDune · 11/11/2021 09:15

But by washing dishes in a bowl/sink of water, youre washing dishes in dirty/contaminated water, and not pure h2o!

Unless of course you give the dishes a subsequent quick rinse with fresh running water after the bowl wash?

(For example, before I have a bath, I make sure I have a quick shower first)

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 11/11/2021 09:26

How strange
I never shower before having a bath
I do rinse soapy water off my dishes after washing in the bowl

RaisinFlapjack · 11/11/2021 09:28

But by washing dishes in a bowl/sink of water, youre washing dishes in dirty/contaminated water, and not pure h2o!

Do you think all the (normal) people who wash their dishes in a bowl of “contaminated” water are constantly getting sick from dirty plates?

This is what I never get about threads like this. There will always be people who declare totally normal ways of doing things gross and unhygienic, but what do you think the impact is? We don’t exist in sterile environments. It just doesn’t matter if you don’t change your towels daily or wash your dishes in water that’s already had other dishes in it.

RampantIvy · 11/11/2021 09:34

I think you are being overly fastidious. I never shower before a bath, but I am never filthy before getting in the bath. Your extreme aversion to "dirt" isn't healthy.

And my washing up water is not dirty or contaminated. How do you do your laundry? Do you wash each item individually in a fresh bowl of soapy water? Putting a washing load of mixed clothes together is pretty much the same as having a bath without having a shower first, or using a bowl of water for washing up.

You must have a very high water bill.

NotMyCat · 11/11/2021 09:39

I put liquid on the sponge, wash the dishes then rinse

HappySantasaurus · 11/11/2021 09:40

Who has time to shower and bath?! Surely this isn't something people really do?

HarrietsChariot · 11/11/2021 09:41

I always leave the tap running while brushing my teeth but it genuinely never occurred to me that doing the washing up under a running tap rather than in a bowl of water was an actual option - it just seems nonsensically wasteful even when I'm on "climate strike" in protest against climate change protestors blocking roads. Might give it a go if the IB idiots start disrupting my life again.

wasthataburp · 11/11/2021 09:42
