Ridiculous Road Rage Incident

ALittleBitWorrriedNow · 10/11/2021 19:27

I just want to vent really 😒

I’ve just been road-raged by a young man and his partner who then went on to call me a “f*#%ing spastic”. I mean, who the hell uses language like that these days?!

It was totally my right of way as I was turning right into my road (side road) from the main road but he obviously thought it was ok to pull out first which would have meant I’d have to then wait for another gap in the traffic and hold up everyone behind me.

He was totally in the wrong yet behaved so angrily - flippin bully 😤

I’m sorry this happened to you and agree guy was a cockwomble.

Although it’s your right of way, would you not usually let the other driver out first as a courtesy though?

AdditionalCharacter · 10/11/2021 20:54

@ALittleBitWorrriedNow

AdditionalCharacter sorry you’re absolutely right, I should have blanked it out. It’s such a horrible term and I’m so shocked that people still think it’s even vaguely ok to use it.
Thank you for acknowledging that. It's an awful word and as a parent of a child with SN it's a bit of a trigger.

I can see why it would upset you as a driver as well.

1forAll74 · 10/11/2021 21:12

It happens a lot, some people who cause accidents,or near accidents on the road, always blame the other person, and use foul language and various hand gestures etc, and its usually the male species who do this.
Kings of the road, with no brains or sense.

foxy86 · 10/11/2021 21:13

There is a roundabout near me where the left lane is for left and straight on and right for straight on and right and there are signs that say this. However as the left turn has 2 lanes some drivers think they can come from the right lane and go left which doesn’t work well when someone in left lane is going straight on. Had this happen a few times but I tend to have a feeling about it when it will happen and slow down. Nearly got hit by a van though so that was fun.
Also had a woman yell aggressively for me to fucking shift when I was at a red light and she wanted to go left. Like where should I have gone.

KrispyKremeDream · 10/11/2021 21:25

@PintOfCoffeePlease

Same today. I was merging left into a gap in slow moving traffic, everyone was politely going one by one as you do. I indicated and started to move left and this ridiculous woman in a giant car behind put her foot down to shoot past me and stop me merging - only there wasn’t room so she ended up partially on the pavement almost hitting a lamppost. She then swerved violently back toward me and almost hit me, and gave me the most aggressive middle finger I’ve ever seen (actual teeth bared, never seen anything like it). I just moved back and let her past but it’s been pissing me off since it happened. Thanks for the rant OP - no YANBU and neither was I!
To be fair, it sounds like it was her right of way. She may well have just been an idiot, but it also sounds like she may have been letting these cars merge one by one as you say, and they just wouldn’t stop merging so she had to close the gap.

One of my pet hates when driving the 32 tonner at work is when there’s an obstruction on the other side and I flash somebody to come through, ever so slightly slowing down, to then find loads of people nip in behind them so that you eventually end up stopped stationary with a line of traffic driving around the obstruction when it’s actually them that should be waiting for a gap.

I had it happen twice today and it’s annoying as the truck takes so long to get moving again. Second time I just kept going and one bloke had to swerve back into his lane as he realised I wasn’t having it. He shouted something angry at me and I mouthed FO.

3scape · 10/11/2021 21:30

Ah yes. The cockwombles are very keen on not understanding right of way here or how to overtake a bike. I was copped and forced off the road last week by a car who of course failed to stop. Funnily enough it's the same road where a car hit my parked car (I was sat in it) and failed to stop too. Oh how sad they all must get when I do report to the police with footage.

Dash/ body cams are the way forward with so many irresponsible drivers.

3scape · 10/11/2021 21:31

Are you aware the zip is recommended practice for merging traffic?

Nope - letting people out is only a reasonable course of action if it will logically improve the flow of the roads. People who do it indiscriminately often cause more confusion and slow everything down.
ALittleBitWorrriedNow · 10/11/2021 21:42

Cuck00soup - Although it’s your right of way, would you not usually let the other driver out first as a courtesy though?

Yes if I was going straight on then I would have been happy to let him out. However, he had nowhere to go as the traffic on the main road was queuing and because I was turning right he would have basically blocked me from turning and I then would have been left waiting for a gap in the traffic. It was clear for me to go but not for him. Very entitled driving tbh.

Of course. You can’t be crap at merging when driving a wagon in rush hour city traffic. In the example above I was wondering if the ‘angry woman’ was getting annoyed at multiple cars merging consecutively without letting her in. This would normally be the logical explanation for somebody closing the gap angrily.

Bahhhhhumbug · 10/11/2021 21:45

KrispyKremeDream do you mean like on a motorway slip road when people trying come onto the inside lane but you can't move across to middle lane because no one will let you out so you slow down instead.
Really annoys me to as well as being dangerous and the drivers coming on the motorway always seem think they have a right to pull onto the m/way whether there's room or not. Surely those already on the motorway have right of way and yes should let people on when possible but if its not, it's not

KrispyKremeDream · 10/11/2021 21:47

@ILoveAllRainbowsx

But it isn't just courtesy. It is much harder to turn right from a side road so I always let them go first
I do too, but OP is saying that their path was blocked because there was a slow moving line of traffic, so they would’ve ended up blocking her while waiting for the line to move forwards. At least that’s what it sounded like to me.
malmi · 10/11/2021 21:48

It's often dangerous to randomly decide to flip the priorities the way some posters are advocating. For example when there's another car behind you which undertakes you whilst you're letting someone out. You flash them to pull out and they drive into the undertaking car. Better to just follow the highway code.

No, I was replying to the poster that was merging into a lane on her left and said the woman in that lane tried to close the gap and ended up almost crashing. I think the woman probably got annoyed with people taking the piss and tried to close the gap but the poster moved over anyway.
TravisFountain · 10/11/2021 21:50

@VeniVidiWeeWee

What made you sure it was your right of way?
Highway Code?

Well, it’s their fault if they don’t look left while pulling out.
KrispyKremeDream · 10/11/2021 21:54

Highway Code doesn’t actually give right of way. It’s more advising on best practice.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 10/11/2021 21:57

You really aren't supposed to flash people to let them out, or give any other signal of that type either. There are lots of situations where letting people out is counterproductive or even dangerous - it really shouldn't be something you're doing "all the time".

KrispyKremeDream · 10/11/2021 21:59

The rules in The Highway Code do not give you the right of way in any circumstance, but they advise you when you should give way to others. Always give way if it can help to avoid an incident.

I’m noticed an incredible in really poor driving and attitudes lately. I’m teaching my DD to drive and it’s very scary. From sooooo many not using indicators to those overtaking us dangerously because she has L plates on even though we are doing the speed limit and she is competent and nearing her test.

Benjispruce5 · 10/11/2021 22:03

Increase not incredible

Driving to the letter of the Highway Code doesn’t really work either. For example, how am I supposed to let an arctic know their trailer has cleared me and it’s safe to pull back over if I can’t flash him? When moving back into the slow lane after overtaking it can be hard to judge the distance accurately given how far behind the other vehicle is and how small it appears in the left mirror, which is about six feet from where you’re sitting. In the dark and rain with lots of ambient glare it can be really hard to judge.
SunshineCake1 · 10/11/2021 22:05

Some people are just awful. I got yelled at today as I wouldn't let someone in. They weren't indicating and if I had have let them in it would have left me in the way of someone else who had the green light. This way only the driver who didn't use the indicator was inconvenienced instead of two others. The stupid thing is they carried on in the original lane then cut across the far left lane and over the zigzags to completely leave the road and if I had let them in they would have been in the wrong lane anyway!
