is one hour revision a lot in a day for child in secondary 1 who has a science test next week? Child just spends all day joyously playing computer games. I just cant get child to commit to their work first, so I even said I am going to change the password for the wifi. Child usually tries to undercut commitment and said will do half an hour, I insist on 2 x 30 mins separated, or wifi goes off. Comments?

What is secondary 1? Is it big exam year?

Starcaller · 10/11/2021 13:31

Do you mean first year of secondary? An hour a day of study for an informal in-school test seems overkill to me. Is it just a class test thing? Or an actual qualification?

KeyLimeFly · 10/11/2021 13:32

Secondary 1? Year 7? Seems a bit overkill if it’s not directly contributing to GCSE/A Levels.

Waahingwashingwashing · 10/11/2021 13:32

So first year? It’s an in class test?

I’d be happy if they crammed the night before tbh

RedCarsGoFaster · 10/11/2021 13:42

An hour a day for a year 7(?)/age 11 class test? Too much.

But you having control of the WiFi is perfectly reasonable..

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 10/11/2021 13:46

Jeez in year 7 DS 14 did nowhere near as much revision. If it were GCSEs I'd see your point.

suspiria777 · 10/11/2021 13:52

Lol. in year seven I had, I think, 4 or 5 lessons of science a week -- so 3h or 3h45 a week.

Why would your child need to do 2 (or more) x the weekly class time in revision, plus all their usual homework, for one little test? Year 7 isn't even difficult stuff -- it shouldn't need going over every day for a hour. This is something of an exaggeration, but not really: would you expect a literate child to "revise" the alphabet for an hour a day?

Millie50 · 10/11/2021 13:58

Do you mean S1, so they're 11 or 12 years old? If yes, then YABU. They've got years of exams ahead of them, let them be a child while they can.
But YABU to limit gaming. Creative/outdoor hobbies too 😊

mumofmunchkin · 10/11/2021 14:00

I used to cram for the night or two before for in class tests at that age. Am now university educated with a professional job. Those in class tests on a single topic really don't require hours and hours of revision a week in advance.

End of year tests, or tests which contribute to qualifications, then yes, go for it.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/11/2021 14:10

If it's just a generic test in Y7 (so not GCSE mocks etc), then I'd ask them to do some spot revision/I'd test them on some stuff in the three days or so leading up to the test

InTheLabyrinth · 10/11/2021 16:44

For an 11 or 12 year old child? I'd be well chuffed if they did an hours revision total for a test in total.
My 12 yr old rarely does an hour, total, of homework each night. An hour on one subject each night seems excessive.

Lasair · 10/11/2021 18:48

Secondary teacher here. We have mocks next week I advised a student today to have this plan when they get home from school.
4pm science
5pm maths
6pm break
7pm history
8pm french

And so on this should be differ t each day so each subject is covered.

Throckmorton · 10/11/2021 19:17

4 hours homework a night?!

I think that's mad. I wouldn't be able to absorb anything going about it like that.
EekThreek · 10/11/2021 19:26

DD1 is in y7 and I would absolutely not expect her to do 7 hours of revision for a single test in her first term of secondary.

I would think it was nice if she did an hour in total, but not every day for a week. Also, if she spends an hour a day doing that revision, when would she do any of her other homework??

Mocks as in GCSE? Please don't tell me this is a revision plan for y7/S1???
Lasair · 11/11/2021 10:25

Ah didn’t see it was for a year 7! Yeah that’s for GCSE

maofteens · 11/11/2021 10:57

@Lasair that is a punishing schedule. My daughter did her GCSEs last year and she didn't get home from school until 5pm, and I'd expect her to take a break after 8 hours of school. I think two hours a (school) night tops then more on weekends for mocks. Kids tend to study for the tests they have first anyway - and it's not equal time for each subject as some they have better understanding of. .

titanimum · 11/11/2021 11:03

Secondary 1 high school, class science test on biology,
12 years old. so consensus is 1hour a day this week is too much?

Waaaay too much. I'm surprised you even know about the test.

I'd have laughed in my teachers faces if they'd suggested 4 hours of revision a night.

You're barmy.

The school are failing their students if that much additional work is required.

Lasair · 11/11/2021 11:22

@girlmom21

You really have no clue of the demands on students these days.

girlmom21 · 11/11/2021 11:24

@Lasair I've got 3 teacher relatives and 3 siblings who've all left school in the past 3 years.

You're putting unnecessary stress onto children.

yikerspipers · 11/11/2021 11:27

Way too much for a 12 year old. Would they do an hour a day for every other test too? That could be the whole day.

So basically a 12 hour day for an 11 year old. This is absolutely absurd even for an older child!
