is one hour revision a lot in a day for child in secondary 1 who has a science test next week? Child just spends all day joyously playing computer games. I just cant get child to commit to their work first, so I even said I am going to change the password for the wifi. Child usually tries to undercut commitment and said will do half an hour, I insist on 2 x 30 mins separated, or wifi goes off. Comments?

@Saoirse82 as I’ve said I didn’t see it was for a 11 year old but for a 16 year old yes it is needed for their GCSEs

Thevoiceofreason2021 · 11/11/2021 11:42

It’s way too much. As long as the results are reasonable I would leave them alone. There is more to life than exam results.

No wonder kids' mental health is shot these days if this is what the system requires.

For a bog standard class test? Yes, unreasonable

EekThreek · 11/11/2021 20:02

@titanimum

Secondary 1 high school, class science test on biology, 12 years old. so consensus is 1hour a day this week is too much?
It's too much, yes
Hbs21 · 11/11/2021 20:38

Sounds like a lot for first year of secondary. I understand you want your child to revise but this sounds a bit much. Maybe you could go over some key points with them a little bit each day leading up to the test. Otherwise I'd let them enjoy the last few years of school before the need to revise increases quite dramatically!

jcyclops · 12/11/2021 00:14

So child has only had about 8-9 weeks of teaching since starting secondary? I would doubt if there would be much to revise anyway. I would think a total of 2 hours would be plenty.

GreenLakes · 12/11/2021 13:47

@maofteens

It’s not too much at all in the week before important gcse mocks in year 11.

Clearly that level of work wouldn’t be sustainable for the whole year, but tbh year 11 students should not have a lot of free time during mock and exam periods. The vast majority of time during these few weeks should be spent revising, so that DC can be assured that they have worked as hard as they can.

DS2 is in year 11 and the expectation from his school is 3 hours of revision on school nights and 8 hours over the weekends throughout the year. During his mock period he’ll be doing at least 4 hours on school nights and 9 hours per day at weekends.

Poor kid! Why do people think this is a reasonable expectation for children?!

Chocolatewheatos · 12/11/2021 20:43

Don't need to revise until proper exams. GCSEs or your countries equivalent. Would not be expecting a 12yo to revise for a test daily. Maybe just a quick booster the day before.

Jesus that's ridiculous. It's not healthy at all. And it isn't good for results either, they'll be mentally exhausted. A full day's intensive school and then another 3hrs?! Is there even time for exercise, dinner, shower and a decent night's sleep? Never mind socialisation and relaxation.

Chocolatewheatos · 12/11/2021 20:50

@Lasair

Secondary teacher here. We have mocks next week I advised a student today to have this plan when they get home from school. 4pm science 5pm maths 6pm break 7pm history 8pm french

And so on this should be differ t each day so each subject is covered.

Dinner? Shower? Bed time?
izzylizard · 12/11/2021 20:54

I’m presuming this isn’t in the UK?

We don’t know how important these tests might be?

MilitantFawcett · 12/11/2021 21:07

In year 7? Yes very unreasonable. According to the GCSE session my son’s school did recently the evidence on revision is that short intense spells with a break is much better, even as adults our brains struggle to absorb much after 40 minutes.
