Is £80-£90 a week grocery shopping tomuch?

Newmumlake · 09/11/2021 20:05

My partner has recently had a go at me that our weekly shop is far to expensive.

I usually shop at Asda using the click and collect service.

I will spend £80-£90 on groceries for 7 days. This includes 7 lunches, 7 dinners, snacks, cleaning products, baby produces, and dog food.

Is this too much?

Tell him to do it and to stop complaining

Fwiw I have to self isolate with Dd3 for 3 days from tomorrow and I went to tescos and spent 168 - that's everything for about 5 days for 2 adults, 2 dogs and one dd (15). It includes 2 very nice bottles of wine.

Hortonhearsadoctorwho · 09/11/2021 20:22

Apparently ‘The average spend on food per person is £40.30 per week’
So you’re well within that, especially with baby and dog as well.

Why not give him £30 a week and tell him to do the grocery. See how well he does.

WalkingOnSonshine · 09/11/2021 20:22

I spend £60-70 per week for 2 adults and a baby who eats the same as us, but doesn’t have formula etc.

I buy nappies, wipes and pet food separately to that in bulk. That together maybe works out as an extra £5-7 per week.

kowari · 09/11/2021 20:22

Mine was without the cats, £40 for two adult sized people and £10 for the cats.

StrongerOrWeaker · 09/11/2021 20:23

When did he last shop?I remember spending 20 quid a week as a student 15-20 years ago!

frogsbreath · 09/11/2021 20:24

I spent that for two adults and one ds and we still have at least one takeaway a week so I think it's very average. I suspect your DH would go off his tits if you halved that cost but he never had a packet of crisps or non see through toilet roll again. Stuff costs money! I'm so over people who will criticise without experience of the actual task. Let him get "decent" meals and everything else for less than you.

TuftyMarmoset · 09/11/2021 20:27

Seems like a lot given Asda is a cheaper supermarket but nappies are expensive I guess. We spend about £30 a week for two adults in Lidl or £40 in Sainsburys.

ponkydonkey · 09/11/2021 20:28

Hmm only me a teen and a primary school aged child

I spend at least £90 and then top up shop £ 30/40 at the weekend

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 09/11/2021 20:28

Pre covid/brexit i spent £80 a week on shopping for 5 of us and that included nappies, cleaning products and toiletries. Now im lucky if i spend less than £150 for the same stuff and no nappies as youngest is now potty trained.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 09/11/2021 20:29

Perhaps he should do the food shop if he can do it cheaper?

BiddyPop · 09/11/2021 20:30

Wait until you get a teen - my bill is £250/week (2 adults, teen, dog).

TuftyMarmoset · 09/11/2021 20:30

According to the ONS the average spend for a household per week on food in 2020 was £56.60 per week and £2.50 per week on cleaning supplies.

User527294627 · 09/11/2021 20:31

I spend a little more than that on two adults, a baby and a cat. I think it's fine! Food is just so expensive at the moment.

Cosyblankets · 09/11/2021 20:32

Send him shopping

Newmumlake · 09/11/2021 20:35

I absolutely will!!

2 adults, one hungry teen & my order to be delivered tomorrow is £87.
Not even any cleaning stuff or toiletries on it and only 3 different meats.

Prices have gone up. A lot.

Quornflakegirl · 09/11/2021 20:38

I manage £100 a week for 2 adults and 2 dc (both 9) and a cat. That’s no alcohol, we don’t drink. It includes school lunches and I feel that week each good, healthy food as I cook from scratch and we eat little preprepared foods.

Tenfifteen · 09/11/2021 20:44

I spend a lot more than that. You’re doing really well so maybe he needs to be more specific about what he wants to stop doing or eating?

That said I’m horrified how much everything costs at the moment because of inflation. Not looking forward to interest rates rising either...

Grida · 09/11/2021 20:46

I spend quite a bit more than that for family of 4. I would ask him to do it for a month and see how he gets on.

OrangeBananaFish · 09/11/2021 20:48

We spend about £150 a week. That's on 2 adults, 3 DC (16, 13 and 10), a cat and a dog. I thought I was spending a lot and surprised to see that it really isn't.

Prices have really gone up recently though. I noticed that when Covid first came my weekly shop went up and now we are getting back to normal (obvs Im aware Covid is still around) it seems to have gone up again.

BoredZelda · 09/11/2021 20:48

Nah. We spend 100 quid every time we go to the supermarket. The fortnightly online shop was usually about 140 quid for 3 of us.

MilduraS · 09/11/2021 21:09

Yes but then you watch shows like Eat Well for Less and realise a lot of people don't have a clue what they spend on average.
spookysoul · 09/11/2021 21:13

That seems pretty standard to me. For me, DH, and DS, ours ranges from £60 a week to nearly £100 a week! Literally just depends on what meals we’ve decided to eat, if DS needs nappies/formula, if there’s any booze or extra treats, big packs of household items needed etc.

TuftyMarmoset · 09/11/2021 21:19

It’s funny you mention that @MilduraS because I was actually thinking that this thread reminded me of that where they all have no idea how much more than the average they are spending. Can’t remember which figures they quote but their figure for a family of three was definitely under £80.

PollyWobbles · 09/11/2021 21:19

I spend around £200 a week at least for 2 adults and one adult like appetite.
