To ask if you know anyone who needed a ventilator due to covid?

A close family member is on a ventilator with covid. They are very sick, it's not looking good. Just looking for some hope really- if you had a friend/loved one who needed ventilation what was the outcome? How long were they on a ventilator for?

Husband of my cousin's friend was on a ventilator. This was not long after the initial lockdown last year. I think it was at least a couple of weeks, possibly a bit longer. He came home around 14 weeks after he first went into hospital. His health will never be what it was, but he's doing fine. It just took him some time to recover. No underlying health conditions.

Sh05 · 08/11/2021 21:29

I know a few people, different outcomes for all three. Two are doing relatively well after between 3 days and 3 weeks on the ventilator.

One sadly passed away after nearly two months on it. He was young and otherwise healthy, worked in the NHS and had a young family.

Pumpkinstace · 08/11/2021 21:32

April 2020 my 53 year old uncle went on a ventilator.

He died after 2 weeks. They couldn't do any more and withdrew the treatment.

So sorry you are going though this.

@ShitThisHurts hello

Hoping your loved one recovers soon. If you don't mind me asking how old this person is and was they vaccinated? Have they any health issues? I did read on here today a poster said a lady who was 93 with loads of health problems on a ventilator has recovered. I'm so
Scared of covid I have asthma and an eating disorder and live in fear from it. Xx

steppemum · 08/11/2021 21:32

14 year old girl with downs syndrome was on a ventilator.

She is now off and getting better

That is very sad. There is definitely a correlation between longer periods of ventilation and poor outcomes. My relative has been on it for 6 days now but nowhere near ready to come off it. Just praying each day for some improvement

71 year old CEV on ventilator for 8 days in Oct 2020. In hospital for a month. Fine now. Felt like a miracle. It got worse before it got better. Fingers crossed for you xx

ethelredonagoodday · 08/11/2021 21:35

My Dad is one one at the moment. CPAP type. Was admitted on Friday. He is doing ok, but very poorly. Has significant underlying health conditions as immunosuppressed and also has only recently completed a course of chemo. He's late 60s and otherwise I'm pretty good health. Full jabbed up. 😔😭

Awalkintime · 08/11/2021 21:35

Yes - 3 members of the same family for about 4 weeks. 2 of which needed intensive support at home from family afterwards (30 year old needing their arse wiping literally) both of those two have significant hair loss too now and are still struggling months later. All 3 had refused the vaccine.

1 person who died was ventilated less than a week - also mid 30s. This person was before the vaccine was out but worked in a place with no measures and which is now being investigated by the H & S exec due to boss saying covid isn't real and no measures will be necessary.

ethelredonagoodday · 08/11/2021 21:36

*in, not I'm.

Peeceandquite · 08/11/2021 21:38

I know 3, all survived. Longest was 3 weeks on a ventilator and many weeks after in hospital, but he's doing ok now

lljkk · 08/11/2021 21:38

Michael Rosen was on a ventilator a long spell, 6 weeks.

I won't lie, he's had a long road to recovery. But point is he has steadily recovered. X fingers for your loved one.

thetittifer · 08/11/2021 21:40

Yep, he was in a coma for 8 weeks, he had a stroke but they're not sure when, he has a long road to recovery but to be honest everyone thought he was going to die. He slowly regained his speech and some movement but i think he'll be in hospital or some type of rehabilitation centre for at least a year.

Jumpingintochristmas · 08/11/2021 21:43

Family friend was on and off CPAP for six days at the peak of the pandemic. Not placed in a ventilator as they deemed him unlikely to survive and others needed it more. He passed away three weeks after contracting covid.

wombatspoopcubes · 08/11/2021 21:48

My dad. He survived (miraculously, even one of the doctors said he wouldn't make it). He's recovering but will never get his old fitness back, we have to see how far his recovery will go.

I don't remember how long he was ventilated. More than a week, less than 3. He did have another health problem at the same time which made him so much more vulnerable and also that's why he'll never completely recover. Plus being 70+.

But he did survive.

comfortablyfrumpy · 08/11/2021 22:05

A friend of mine was on a ventilator for 2 weeks I think... she was in ICU for over 3 weeks.
She got through it all fine and is back at work - it was touch and go for a while though.
I hope you get good news soon x

GottaGoCYa · 08/11/2021 22:14

I know 4 people on a ventilator due to Covid. One sadly died (early 30s, no health problems), two took a few weeks but are now home and recovering slowly. 1 is still on it, he was weaned off but unfortunately had to go back into ICU.

Really hope your relative makes a quick recovery. The problem with Covid is the patient can start to recover but then suddenly deteriorate. It's a scary time.

Zeb81 · 08/11/2021 22:43

The sooner ventilation is no longer required the better outcome generally. I spoke to an ICU nurse recently and they indicated that outcomes recently are poor generally irrespective of vaccination or not and in that case I would always hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

If anyone you know gets covid, monitor o2 carefully and seek medication support at the earliest opportunity if required.

Monkeytennis97 · 08/11/2021 22:46

2 friends of mine. Both teachers in different schools. Males in their 50s. Thankfully both now ok and back at work after months and months off.

Hope your friend makes a good recovery. Thanks

Shitfuckcommaetc · 08/11/2021 22:49

My mum was on a vent for 11 weeks, in hospital for over 18 weeks in total. She hasn't made a full recovery, but is now able to get around the house easily enough.

There is hope. Never give up

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 08/11/2021 22:54

I know 3. Sadly, they all died but this was much earlier in the pandemic. I think treatment has changed a lot since then so hopefully the prognosis is more positive now. Sending love to you and your family. This really sucks.

Ofalltheginjoints · 08/11/2021 22:58

I know/ know of 3 people, Former work colleague of mine was on a ventilator for 5 weeks but is now fully recovered

Current work colleagues wife was on one for 3 says before she passed away (also had a pre- existing health condition)

Another work colleague's wife in her late 30's was on one for a week or so but has thankfully recovered.

Sending love and best wishes to your relative, where there is life there is hope

dontletthemugglesgetyoudownn · 08/11/2021 22:58

Yes. 17 weeks pregnant 25 years old colleague of mine. Her parents were told she was very very unwell, unvaccinated, they opted to put her on ecmo to give the baby a chance of living. Baby was born at 26 weeks and she died soon after. Obviously ecmo is last resort anyway but it was such a long time on it. Awful

hellywelly3 · 08/11/2021 23:20

My friends husband was. I think about 1 or 2 weeks. Was a Very fit and healthy guy early 50’s no underlying health problems. He’s ok now but don’t think he’ll ever get back to 100%. The doctors were extremely surprised how well he recovered, they said it was down to his wife monitoring his blood oxygen levels and getting help quickly when they dropped to 74%

hellywelly3 · 08/11/2021 23:21

Sorry should say calling an ambulance quickly
