To ask if you know anyone who needed a ventilator due to covid?

A close family member is on a ventilator with covid. They are very sick, it's not looking good. Just looking for some hope really- if you had a friend/loved one who needed ventilation what was the outcome? How long were they on a ventilator for?

Yes, my uncle. He is disabled and was on a ventilator for weeks. He made it through, surprising everyone. He’s in his late 60s. Not quite the same as he was fairly unwell before he caught CV anyway.

This was back at the beginning, so no vaccine.

Saoirse82 · 09/11/2021 00:47

Best friends cousin was on a ventilator, she is in her twenties with minor under lying health conditions (wasn't CEV). Not vaccinated. Spent 6 weeks in hospital, 3 ventilated and at one point family was told it looked as though she might not pull through but she's out of hospital now but still has a long way to go before she's fully recovered. I really hope your family member makes a good recovery. Flowers

I am sorry. I read the children’s author Michael Rosen, age 74, was on a ventilator for 47 days. He thankfully recovered.

FlipperStoleMyBall · 09/11/2021 03:49

A friend in his 40s, was on a ventilator, in a coma. Has thankfully recovered and is back to life as normal.
Sending all the best to your family member.

I know one, my friend's husband. Very sadly died after about 8 weeks being on a ventilator. He was 46 with no underlying health issues. So very sad, my friend is widowed and their 3yr old son has been left fatherless.

ShitThisHurts · 09/11/2021 05:43

Thanks for sharing your experiences. So sorry to those of you who've lost someone. Its a bloody horrible thing. I'm trying to be realistic but I am clinging to hope. Its likely to be 5-6 weeks so we've a while to go yet

@ShitThisHurts Dads best friend was on a vent for 1 week and sadly passed away. Had gone into hospital after suffering a severe asthma attack, caught covid in hospital and never came out unfortunately.
My 100 year old (😳😲) neighbour was on one for around 3/4 weeks - she made a full recovery and is now back happily in her own home with very little in the way of lasting effects!
Praying for a good outcome for your family OP.! It’s a horrible position to be in when you’re just waiting for news and feeling useless ❤️

SpecialchildSupermum · 09/11/2021 07:45

My best friends husband was on a ventilator for 3 weeks. He didn’t make it. He was 52. Was may last year, so unvaccinated. They know so much more about Covid now. So hold onto hope Flowers

MLMshouldbeillegal · 09/11/2021 07:46

No.

I don't know anyone who was ill enough to be in hospital with it, or even to seek medical attention with it.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 09/11/2021 07:48

But having said that the medical knowledge about how to treat this thing have hugely improved over the last 2 years with new drugs and processes. Trust the staff and hope you get positive news soon.

frumpety · 09/11/2021 08:28

Fortunately, I have only known people who have needed CPAP, they all recovered, they were all before the vaccination programme started.

FreedomFaith · 09/11/2021 10:09

I don't know anyone, but hope your relative pulls through. Flowers

Babdoc · 09/11/2021 10:17

One of the earliest studies, from April/May 2020, showed a 57% survival rate for ventilated Covid patients, OP.
However, they would all have been unvaccinated at that time, so the outcomes in vaccinated patients nowadays are likely to be a lot better.

SchoolForScoundrels · 09/11/2021 10:21

A friend in her 50s, asthmatic and obese, was for a week, but has now made a full recovery. She had had one jab at that point.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 09/11/2021 10:22

Yes. One was a friend who was on it for a few weeks and sadly died, the other is my unvaccinated SIL who was on it for a few days and is now at home.

ShitThisHurts · 09/11/2021 19:41

Some positive outcomes which is nice to read. Thanks for all the well wishes x

My friends husband was at the start of the year. He has fully recovered and once he was off the ventilator he made a remarkable recovery. Age 50 and fit and healthy pre covid.

Youngatheart00 · 10/11/2021 22:13

Yes, an uncle early on. He was in hospital for 3 weeks. Ventilator and ICU for a good part of that. He survived and is now well and active again.

All best wishes to you and your family

NoDecentHandlesLeft · 10/11/2021 22:54

I didn't know them very well, but a coworker in a different department to me. ITU for around 6 weeks, ventilated for some of it. Full recovery, although has suffered from long covid (fatigue and headaches, mostly)
Wishing your family the best.

PlanDeRaccordement · 10/11/2021 23:01

One friend was, but he passed. He actually went into hospital with a head injury and caught Covid there. Which is being investigated.

Another friend was told she probably would not make it so did goodbyes before she was put under and on the ventilator. But she beat the odds and was off it 6 weeks later. She’s now home and actually recently did a trip abroad to be dangled down a volcano!

Fruitbatdancer · 10/11/2021 23:03

Friends dad did 8 weeks on it and 2 heart attacks. Fit and well pre covid and mid 60’s. It was touch and go but he made it and is home and well, if a little frail.
Where there is life there is hope OP xxx

Entschuldigung · 11/11/2021 07:36

One friend: aged 49, overweight but no underlying health conditions.
Ventilated for nearly 3 weeks back in May.
Has made a really good recovery.

maddening · 11/11/2021 07:54

How old is your relative? What is their usual health like? Have they been vaccinated? Are they being treated with the antivirals? All these things will impact their outcome

Wishing you the best op x
