A DPD driver will give me the money? Really?!

ItsAllAboutTheLighting · 08/11/2021 16:08

I'm just trying to sell a full sized keyboard.

Someone is keen, she said she will send a DPD driver tomorrow, he will give me the money and I don't need to package it.

Is that real? Can that really happen? I've not heard of this before?

How can she sue you? On what grounds?

SirGawain · 08/04/2022 22:01

@tallduckandhandsome

Hmm it’s a tricky one. On one hand at least the cash will be handed to you. On the other, what is she says you never gave her the item?

I know eBay has a service where courier companies can bid to delivery the parcel, but it’s all done via eBay so you would have had proof that tye item was collected/delivered.

What is the selling platform?

The only tricky thing is the scammer. This is a well known scam often highlighted on Mumsnet.
Georgeskitchen · 08/04/2022 22:03

This type of scam is prolific on Gum tree. My son pointed it out and warned us not to touch it with a bargepole

maddening · 08/04/2022 22:09

I have had a courier come with cash, however the scam ones are where they say a courier will come with cash but you need to cover the insurance upfront online, but not to worry they will pay you back, obviously there is no courier coming with cash.

But my transaction was literally a courier arriving with instructions to give me the cash in return for the goods - I did not have to do anything or pay anything.

Gardeninspring · 08/04/2022 22:16

I had this back in December when trying to sell a kids bike on FB MP. Definitely a scam.

GremlinDolphin4 · 08/04/2022 22:41

I’ve had this scam tried on me recently for items £75.

IntricateRhyme · 24/04/2022 12:22

I nearly fell for this scam yesterday. So cross with myself for believing it was genuine. I put a couple of items up for sale on FB marketplace and had two enquiries yesterday. One turned out to be completely genuine, lived locally, collected item & paid for it. Other one said was sending DPD courier and money to collect. Was quite persistent, sent link to "DPD" website, said I had to click link and pay "insurance" and would be refunded on collection. Alarm bells started ringing. I deleted & blocked. Had never heard of this scam before but will be on lookout in future. Feel so stupid for nearly falling for it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/04/2022 12:28

I know this is an old thread thatg keeps coming up again, but I thought this particular scam had died a death

It was all over the place some years ago, but I didn't realise it had done a Lazarus Hmm

wonkygorgeous · 24/04/2022 12:44

I know this is a known scam but surely if you are aware then it's ok?

You can get pens to check cash is genuine. If I were to accept cash I'd be checking it very carefully and not entering into other forms of cash transfer.

I'd also be counting it out in front of them and carefully checking it in front of them before handing over any goods.

We sold an iPad a year ago and the chap only had cash. I bought a UV light and checker pen to verify the notes as genuine. They were.

I counted in in front of the person.

Then I showed them all the functions advertised on the iPad including flaws.

But I didn't send it off via courier, it was collected by the buyer. If I'd have sent it off it would be on my courier account with someone I trust and insurance.

So if put in this situation again and faced with the situation the OP is in I'd probably do it.
But on my terms only. I would make it clear that it's cash only, and no further transactions under any circumstances.

If it is a scam most would not turn up to deliver cash. If they turn up with dubious cash it's returned at the point it fails the uv test.
If at any point they say 'this has happened can you now do this' I'd block and forget them.

I'm usually quite sharp with being duped.

SmudgeButt · 24/04/2022 12:51

I'm obviously missing something here...

OP has something to sell and will be exchanging it with an individual for cash.

Why is that a scam?

Sounds like what happens when I offer something on gumtree or FB market and agree a price and someone come to pay and collect the item. If they show up and have a cheque instead I say no, come back with cash.

IntricateRhyme · 24/04/2022 13:11

www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/p0ye7i/has_anyone_seen_this_as_a_scam_on_facebook/

This is the scam explained. There are other places when I searched FB MP DPD scam, as well.

JennyJumpup · 24/04/2022 13:20

I still don't understand why the fake DPD driver is needed.
As this person is in on the scam why can't they just be the "buyer" in the first place?
They show up and give you the counterfeit money for your item.

Norgie · 24/04/2022 13:21

Visions of all these delivery drivers with pockets bursting with cash to pay sellers with.
It's a wonder they haven't been knocked over the head and robbed yet 🙄

JennyJumpup · 24/04/2022 13:22

@IntricateRhyme Thank you! That makes sense now. So the "courier" never actually turns up.

IntricateRhyme · 24/04/2022 13:26

Because they're often overseas. I traced my fake buyer to Eastern Europe.

The DPD link they get you to click on and enter your bank details is a fake. They tell you this is to cover insurance for transport and you will be refunded the sum when "DPD" courier turns up. Except they don't turn up. They've got your name, address and bank details, and your £££ down, with your for sale item still unsold.

It's sickening how many scammers are out there and it makes us suspicious of the genuine buyers also.

ambereeree · 24/04/2022 14:32

I had this when I was selling a pushchair. I blocked the person as they kept messaging even after I said not interested. It even sounds bit ridiculous to be true.

Unsure33 · 24/04/2022 14:44

Me too had it twice yesterday for low value items .

could not work out what the scam was but my spidery senses were up anyway so I just deleted the conversation.

Graspthenettle · 13/07/2022 12:24

My advice, such as it is, is never agree to anything you're not 100% comfortable with

BUT

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, I copied this from the DPD website

COD
If you like to play it safe when it comes to payment processing, simply make use of our cash-on-delivery service. It's easy, quick and safe too. We will only deliver your parcel in return for immediate payment - with a maximum amount of 2,500 €. The C.O.D. amount will be transferred to you within three to five days. COD services enable fast, secure and transparent payment method. It is a much more reliable process, which is doubled checked at every level and offers additional financial reports. When using COD services the risk of insolvency is much lower, also the financial liquidity is improved. The money is transferred back to the consignee in three to five days. Also, we offer a special convenience for this type of service - online payment through a secure online credit card authorization system, WSPay.

C.O.D. service is available in Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary - condition: bank account in Hungary

Ses477 · 02/12/2022 20:11

I had my sewing machine up for sale, and this person from Bermingham (obviously first flag) said it’s a very secure system and was quite insistent that DPD deliver cash then pick up goods! I still said ‘PayPal only’ they’ve now given up, pleased I read your reports, thanks 🙏

CarPoor · 02/12/2022 20:32

I'm not really sure I understand this scam

If your going to give fake cash/a cheque that bounces you don't need to throw in the DPD driver. It's raising red flags, I'm more likely to accept fake cash from someone who seems like a normal person

And why would I need to buy insurance for their courier? What am I insuring? It's their courier, their money then their product.

I would say no, but it seems a bit of a stupid scam tbh

Andreachaverra · 14/02/2023 13:29

They are trying to buy a fridge from me on FB and they apparently will send DPD to pick up the appliance, they will send the money in an envelope but I apparently have to pay for the insurance.

If you do the research on DPDs website, the person that arranges the pick up is the one to pay the insurance to cover the full value of the item.

This persone then sent me screenshots of his supposed payment which looked nothing like what DPDs website or emails look like. They are trying to get me to pay it by saying that they will not be refunded for cancelling the service.

Now he Is threatening me to sue me for harassment and attempted extortion of funds!

There seems to be a lot of scammers on FB!!

billyt · 14/02/2023 13:49

And going by some of the comments on this thread you can see why the scamming bastards do it.

FFS, some people are stupid.

Jamalewing · 17/04/2023 12:43

Just received this:

Ok, I am from Plymouth, the price suits me, I will take it but I would like to come today or tomorrow but I am busy with work at the moment, I will send a DPD EXPRESS to your house to give you your cash and collect the item.

I said 'OK', then received this:

Ok, I explain, a DPD agent will come to your home to give you an envelope containing your money, and once you have verified your money, you will give the object to send it to me .

But what time are you available ?

If they give me cash, I can't see where the scam is, but smells so dodgy.

welshpolarbear · 17/04/2023 12:54

I think it's then about getting your bank details to cover insurance fees that they say they'll replace.

DPD have made it known they would never be involved in collections like this.

It absolutely is a scam.
