Neighbours cooking us alive ….

We live in a freezing but lovely townhouse/tenement /high ceiling, bay but single glazed flat.
It’s been freezing since Before Time
Heating is rubbish and often wear layers to keep warm/survive

About 3 months ago : we got new downstairs neighbours

They did a lot of building work and at first , we thought by the heat and the noise- that they were drying plaster or similar with industrial heaters of some sort ?
Turns out no: they are just from a much warmer country and have their heating on 24/7 !?

My eyeballs are drying out. It’s like a Sahara now
I’ve windows open constantly , but at least my washing dries quickly …

Is it even SAFE to have heating on 24/7? What kind of heating rattles a whole room? My cats are just lying in pools on the floor!

AIBU - you’ll age by dehydration, your cats will eventually jump out of the wide open windows , the noise will drive you mad , it’s bad for the environment
YABU- enjoy the heat ,for once - make a cocktail chillax, throw away your onesies as you won’t need them this winter.

This is when I really love MN:

OP complains that neighbours have their flat too hot > accidentally uncovers cannabis farm.

Not bad for a Monday!

Jijithecat · 08/11/2021 11:30

If it was a cannabis farm you would be able to smell all the moth balls that they use as it's overwhelming.

fournonblondes · 08/11/2021 11:31

I hope that dick goes into oblivion alone with the stupid Kardashians and Kenner’s.

fournonblondes · 08/11/2021 11:31

Sorry wrong threat 🤣🤣🤣

@LibrariesGiveUsPower45321

Are they growing wacky backy?
Exactly my thoughts 🙂
TokyoSushi · 08/11/2021 11:36

Oh I love this thread, makes me proper nostalgic for when we lived in a tenement flat in our early 20's. No such luck with the heating through, just frost on the inside of the windows and mice, but it was beautiful!!

Jijithecat · 08/11/2021 11:38

Also if it's a flat it doesn't sound like the kind of property that would be used for a commercial cannabis farm. Generally there are too many people around in flats who notice comings and goings....

Dreamstate · 08/11/2021 11:40

Lucky u!

I threw open my windows on Saturday morning cos it was fairly mild and sun shining. Best time to get fresh air in. Neighbournpopped over asking me to close em cos they had their heating on and didn't want to lose heated through the party wall to my house and have to heat theirs more and dont I know its all expensive and we should be working together

Hmm I just looked at them like they were crazy. They are free to insulate the party wall on their side if they are so bothered

oakleaffy · 08/11/2021 11:48

@Longdistance

Apart from boiling you alive, are you sure they’re not harvesting Cannabis?
This- Those industrial fans are incredibly loud But surely there would be a smell?
ChristmasGrogu · 08/11/2021 11:50

@Dreamstate I am with you on getting fresh air in every day! Who wants to spend 6months in a sealed box, we get the blankets out, open the windows them out the heating on for the day after that.

That is the most Barking thing ever! The lovely old lady who lived next door never heated the rooms adjoining mine , and the new people have installed CH - and it does feel warmer

But if they asked me not to open my windows I’d also think they were dotty.

Most heat is lost from above.

We lived above an old lady in a rented flat, and all her heat came up to us.
I felt bad, but nothing we could do.

oakleaffy · 08/11/2021 11:55

My friend drives her DH mad by having heating on and windows open.

Sometimes with a woodburner it can get so hot one needs to open a window, and the radiant heat and fresh air is rather lovely-

One point- With carbon &c, will they be banning woodburners/ open coal fires?

MRex · 08/11/2021 11:56

You shouldn't have gone down there. Anyway, clearly a cannabis farm so you'll have to call the police, sorry but usually they get directly.into the electricity supply so it's too dangerous as a fire hazard to leave it..

SunShinesBrightly · 08/11/2021 12:01

I have no advice OP other than run bare foot to the nearest police station if you have to and report the drug farm...
Do police stations even still exist? Phone the non-emergency hotline then!

Your neighbours are crazy! Imagine thinking you have the right to tell your neighbours when they can open their windows.
VickyEadieofThigh · 08/11/2021 12:04

@DaisyStiener

Omg I’m NOT calling the police on a DRUG RING!? This is real life!? They know where i live! ShockShock
I think I might call the nearest station and run it by them...Say something like "This probably sounds alarmist, but..."
CSJobseeker · 08/11/2021 12:04

@girlmom21

With the rise in fuel prices I'd be over the moon if the neighbours were heating both our houses!
Same!
MackenCheese · 08/11/2021 12:06

@LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 yay free heating AND marijuana!!

MargotEmin · 08/11/2021 12:09

This is incorrect, cannabis factories have been discovered in flats. Please don't give unqualified opinions when there is potential for serious harm.

Also there wouldn't typically be lots of comings and goings from cannabis factories (aside from when they're setting up perhaps) as they tend to only cultivate from there, not sell.

You might notice a weekly drop off of food for the gardener (if they're bothering to feed him), but it wouldn't be like a crack house with users coming and going.

ADreadedSunnyDay · 08/11/2021 12:10

I remember a cannabis factory was discovered in the attic /

roof space above the soft play in a rather well-to-do Edinburgh neighbourhood a few years ago ...

I agree- there are a lot of idiot wannabe cannabis farmers- equipment, information, seeds, everything is easily avaible thanks to the internet.
Many many people living in flats grow cannabis, all are foolhardy, many inexperienced who would have trouble keeping a spider plant alive on a windowledge. Not all cannabis farms are in warehouses on farms or industrial estates. Many are small scale, in city flats, naice middle class estates, or sleepy villages.
Throw ego, money and a drug addled brain into the mix- a cannabis farm in a flat is perfect! What could possibly go wrong?

forinborin · 08/11/2021 12:23

I do this. From a warmer country, the house is on 25 degrees always. Not growing cannabis, but tropical plants seem to feel at home.

Somanysocks · 08/11/2021 12:29

Cannabis growers don't give a stuff where they grow it.

My next door neighbours (who have now moved thankfully) grew a very successful crop all over their garden which I only realised once it started stinking.

It's probably a cannabis farm. If the blinds are closed, it';s for sure.
