Wear clothes once, then take them back?

Does anyone do this?

I remember doing this a lot as a teen, so I’d have lots of different outfits to go out in, but couldn’t afford. It was either from the catalogue or from shops.

Haven’t done it since, but was reading about how many fashion influencers on Instagram etc do

I have never done this.

I was thinking about a similar topic the other day, about celebrities only wearing outfits once. I think people in the limelight should normalise wearing outfits multiple times, in our current climate fast fashion is not a good look.

carbon60 · 08/11/2021 22:14

Years ago my friend used to do this. Her mum had a catalogue and she used to order stuff so she had new gear to go to youth club dances . I always thought it was fucking weird , but obviously her mum was ok with it.

DeepaBeesKit · 08/11/2021 22:21

I've only ever returned something worn if it was faulty.

Eg I wore a dress a couple of years ago and a friend pointed out half the hem was completely unravelling. I returned it as faulty.

Disgusting and akin to stealing to routinely buy, wear then return.

lololololollll · 09/11/2021 00:58

Hahaha wow the dramatic responses on here are cracking me up

lololololollll · 09/11/2021 01:11

@BigYellowHat

I can beat that bridal one. DH and I were in H&M one time and he picked up a pair of men’s shorts to try on. He got to the changing rooms before discovering that they were full of diarrhoea and weren’t even H&M branded! Someone had clearly had the shits, grabbed a pair of shorts, gone to the changing rooms and then calmly hung up their shorts ready for an unsuspecting shopper (DH) to pick up 🤮 🤮
This is hilarious and rank all at once.
smoko · 09/11/2021 01:19

Will never forget working again a surf shop during uni days & my manager sniffing the crotches of returned swimwear to check if they’d been worn Hmm

Rank doing this, just shop at charity shops & get gorgeous designer clothes in your budget that you don’t have to return!

MrsAvocet · 09/11/2021 02:17

One of DH's relatives did this at our wedding. The price tag escaped during the reception and was hanging down her back. I spotted it and offered to ask one of the waiters for some scissors, assuming that she'd just forgotten to cut it off. She laughed and told me no, it was deliberate as she'd be sending it back tomorrow. I was shocked. When I was a peniless student I'd sometimes check every item in my size looking for one with a minor fault in the hope of getting a discount, but I would never have dreamed of buying something with the express intent of returning it worn, and I'd never known anyone else do it either. It's a nasty, unhygienic thing to do.

fibrecruncher · 09/11/2021 03:18

Yuck.

FreddieMercurysCat · 09/11/2021 17:39

Nope, never done it. I can’t be arsed with taking stuff back. Have only ever taken back a pair of bloody expensive trousers that became unstitched on the seam after one wear/one wash.

Mamanyt · 09/11/2021 17:43

it is tantamount to theft, and I would never have done it, and never will. Yes, you return them, but no longer new. I know I'd be beyond mad if I had bought an outfit, only to find that someone had previously bought it, danced in it, sweated in it, eaten in it, then returned it. That's a bit disgusting.

MrsGeralt · 09/11/2021 17:44

Most returns go straight to landfill.

KarmaLife · 09/11/2021 17:45

I would never do this, but was accused of it in Jigsaw once.

I tried it in the morning after applying deoderant and obviously some of the perfume was left on the item.

It really upset me as this is something I would never do but it did make me more careful when trying things on at home.

Teatoast00 · 09/11/2021 17:46

I used to work in a well known store and we were made to return soiled boxers from a customer by the area manager. Our own manager was disgusted never mind fact that unworn underwear wasn't allowed to be returned in non disgusting circumstances.

KarmaStar · 09/11/2021 17:49

No.it's dishonest dirty and just yuk.whatever your age.as a teen you were old enough to know right from wrong.

wellstopdoingitthen · 09/11/2021 17:51

I have a work colleague who invited me to her wedding. As she stood at the front exchanging vows, I could see the dress label showing through.

I caught up with her later & whispered to her that she'd forgotten about the label. She triumphantly told me 'oh no, it's going back to the shop tomorrow, I need that £400 for the honeymoon.'

I just smiled & hoped she was joking.Hmm

ufucoffee · 09/11/2021 17:51

I know someone who used to do it and I always thought it was a really cheapskate, skanky thing to do

Beehappy21 · 09/11/2021 17:54

Absolutley not. 🤮

Siameasy · 09/11/2021 17:55

My Nan used to brag about doing this in the 1980s. M and S didn’t have fitting rooms so they had a no quibble refund policy.

Bertiebiscuit · 09/11/2021 17:56

Really never done this, it's illegal vile and lowdown nasty - why would anyone?

Diva66 · 09/11/2021 17:59

Eeuw! YABU, I wouldn’t want to wear stuff some Instagram minger had worn before me.

takenforgrantednana · 09/11/2021 18:00

@Massiveroastdinner no we all didnt do it! never once entered my head and still wouldnt even now well more so

marton4710 · 09/11/2021 18:08

My sister was married in Canada 50 odd years ago. She had very little money and purchased a red hat to wear on the day. Years later she told me she took it back the next day. I was mortified.

JessieLongleg · 09/11/2021 18:14

Last coat I got online has a ribbon from sleeve to collar on the outside if cut can't send it back. It's a good idea so people can't send back after wearing out.

Jewel52 · 09/11/2021 18:23

I volunteer in a charity shop and people still do this with stuff that’s only a few pounds! I’ve noticed that certain brands have very large tags in conspicuous places to discourage it

Granjeanne · 09/11/2021 18:34

Disgusting and immoral and no, I've never done it.
