Does anyone do this?

I remember doing this a lot as a teen, so I’d have lots of different outfits to go out in, but couldn’t afford. It was either from the catalogue or from shops.

Haven’t done it since, but was reading about how many fashion influencers on Instagram etc do

@Megan2018 Yes exactly, so different at that age, now I find it awful

I worked at various clothes shops and always knew when people did that. Unless there was an obvious stain I had to take it back though, otherwise it’s just your word against theirs and management always backed the customer under those circumstances. We all judged the ones who did as dirty cows though.

MysticCT · 07/11/2021 22:05

I knew someone who worked at Chelsea Girl (showing my age there) She said on a Monday morning they used to have loads of returns and they had to smell crotches and armpits on all trousers and tops.
Not surprisingly, she got another job elsewhere.

godmum56 · 07/11/2021 22:19

disgusting

AandWsMum · 07/11/2021 22:22

NOPE.

Absolutely disgusting, rude, tacky.

I know that asos have a policy now where if you are a “serial returner” who often makes large purchases (as in lots of items) and return them all regularly you can actually be banned from returning. Mainly because this is what bloggers do - buy loads and then return it all after trying on for a video.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/11/2021 22:23

It’s a horrible thing to do, and also disgusting hygiene wise

I’ve never done it, but had a school friend and later a boyfriend who seemed to think this was acceptable. I remember the boyfriend smoking in a football top he’d worn for fancy dress and planned to return Envy < not envy

Should have dumped him for so many reasons that doesn’t really even add to it!

DramaAlpaca · 07/11/2021 22:26

Of course not! We most certainly did not 'all do it'. What appalling behaviour.

PepeSilviaDoesNotExist · 07/11/2021 22:27

I did this before by accident. I bought two dresses, the same but different sizes, as wasn’t sure which would fit. I wore one to my friends 18th and decided to send the other back.

A few days after the party I grabbed the spare dress folded it into the bag and returned it.

Later I noticed I’d accidentally kept the unworn dress. I felt guilty so I emailed asos and told them about my mistake and asked if I could get my actual dress back. The person on email just told me to send the other one back and my worn item would be rejected as a return and sent back. It never got sent back and I got refunded for both of them. I’ve no idea how as it definitely needed dry cleaning after I collided with a pint.

LubaLuca · 07/11/2021 22:27

I once received a children's coat from Debenhams that had a pair of gloves balled up in one pocket and an orange peel in the other. Also a blouse from somewhere (possibly Dorothy Perkins?) that reeked of sweat. How didn't the staff notice?!

Chippymunks · 07/11/2021 22:28

The amount of people that used to do this when I worked in M&S and it wasn’t teens.

grapewine · 07/11/2021 22:31

Gross and tacky.

idontlikealdi · 07/11/2021 22:33

This story popped up today!! 🤢🤢🤢

mawkthestork · 07/11/2021 22:40

No I could never.

I have a friend who does it all the time, she's always posting photos on sm of her and her kid in beautiful expensive clothes but she orders them and uses klarna, keeps the tags on then sends them back after 1 wear so rarely actually pays for anything.

wheresmymojo · 07/11/2021 22:41

I work for a very large fashion forward online retailer.

It happens enough that we have an entire strategy around it ('weekend wearers')

ThorsLeftNut · 07/11/2021 22:41

We haven’t all done it.

I know one person who regularly done it but it was a company who started including those large double tags so they couldn’t be hidden and no refunds if the tags had been removed. She stopped not long after that.
She also bought a tag gun so she could reattach before the aforementioned happened.

iklboogiemaninthecloset · 07/11/2021 22:45

Never.

wheresmymojo · 07/11/2021 22:47

@Youdoyoutoday

Yeah, obviously this is grim.

There's definitely a process in place to check all returns and reject any that have obviously been worn.

In defence though the people doing that job would easily miss that stain if they just held the play suit up and looked at it as it's hidden in the crotch.

Grim.

JaceLancs · 07/11/2021 22:47

Never did it or even considered it
Never would do it
I’m not normally judgemental but in this case would judge anyone negatively who did this

TableFlowerss · 07/11/2021 22:48

@nimbuscloud

In m&s recently The lady at the returns desk was sniffing the crotch of a pair of jeans that someone was trying to return You couldn’t pay me enough to do that job
🤢🤮
LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 07/11/2021 22:48

Grim. Never done never would.

tickledtiger · 07/11/2021 22:49

Nah never. I wasn’t fashion forward enough as a teenager and too much of a goodie two shoes anyway.

musicviking1 · 07/11/2021 22:49

Never

NotSure1542 · 07/11/2021 22:49

I’m going to go against the general census and say I’ve done it Blush.
I was very broke, just graduated and had my dream job interview. I was so bad with my finances and put myself into an overdraft because I didn’t have an outfit to wear to the interview. I wanted to keep the outfit for future interviews but couldn’t afford to! I made sure I showered, wore no perfume before wearing it and made sure it was in the condition I bought it in. It’s not something I am proud to admit but I was desperate. I did get the job though and haven’t done it again.
