Fridge Freezer

Lottiethelemming · 07/11/2021 14:35

We have quite a big fridge freezer but it's a standard one, fridge up top, freezer below.

I do a big shop twice a month with smaller shops in between and there's just not enough space.

I also batch cook and I'm limited as to how much I can do it because I don't have the space.

I was talking to my mum about wanting an American-style fridge freezer. Mum, my sister, brother and 2 nephews are coming for Christmas this year so it was even more incentive to get one. Last year when it was just DP, our 2 boys and I, we had to do our Christmas food shopping the night before due to space issues!

She said they're only for rich families and we'd look silly if we got one for a small family of 4! We both work but were not rich! We have the space for one.

Are they pretentious?

If you have one, was it a good idea?

I'd appreciate any recommendations too!

We have one but have quite a few dc. They cost a lot more to run than a regular ff the energy provider told me when i questioned the bill!

Furrydogmum · 07/11/2021 14:41

I love my 90cm wide Beko American style fridge freezer! Had it for at least 7 years now and no problems with it.. We went for the non plumbed one but am buying my son and his fiancée the plumbed in version when their house purchase goes through. I would buy again for sure.

Lillipops · 07/11/2021 14:42

We are a family of 3 and we have a full size fridge and a large chest freezer. Loads of room in them both. During the pandemic it's been a god send as we have been able to do big shops and batch cooking. Doesn't need to be one of the big American fridge freezers, you can get separates Smile

Do they?
HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/11/2021 14:43

There's only 2 of us and we have one. Freezer space is fine, though with batch cooking you can never have enoughSmile

SmellyLikeABlewBooHoo · 07/11/2021 14:44

'Pretentious' or not, if you need one, just get one. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks. If it's functional for you and your family, then you have good use for it.

I don't understand people's (especially on mn) fixation on calling things 'pretentious'.

Pumpkinsonparade · 07/11/2021 14:47

According to Octopus energy they do!

WorraLiberty · 07/11/2021 14:48

This is weird, I live in a borough with a very high poverty rate and these fridges are fairly common in lots of houses/flats?

MatildaTheCat · 07/11/2021 14:52

We have a normal FF in the kitchen and an ancient old one in the garage which is useful for extra stuff or when entertaining.

I feel like the bigger American style FFs kind of invite you to keep too much crap and get a bit grim unless you are really motivated to keep it clean and free of decaying veg.

It’s possible I’m just influenced by my mother’s unpleasant arrangement. Grin

LakeShoreD · 07/11/2021 14:52

We lived in the US for years so I just view them as standard now and couldn’t be without. If you get one definitely go plumbed, I love having cold filtered water and ice on tap.

TheQueef · 07/11/2021 14:55

We have one.
10yr old Samsung with ice and water plumbed in.
The only pro is filtered water (still need to buy filters)
Cons are
it's huge.
They're expensive.
Barring Xmas it always looks bare (fridge)
Freezer always rammed (deceptively small)
Bizarrely attracts cat hairs so always looks grubby.
Sounds like it's smashing the house up when it's doing ice.
Also has a ridiculous alarm after 1.5 seconds of open door so it harasses you when you fill it.

TheQueef · 07/11/2021 14:56

And we still have an ancient under counter freezer in the shed to actually store food.

Pamparam · 07/11/2021 14:57

If you get one, make sure it will fit through your door. We don't have one for this reason (after buying one and the delivery drivers taking it away)!

Duchess379 · 07/11/2021 14:57

Do it! I'm a family of 3 & 3 dogs. Dog food is delivered frozen so I lose freezer space for that. We're always shifting things around the rest of the freezer to make room. I'm now moving & will get an American style fridge freezer. They're not pretentious, they're practical 👍🏼

Nellesbelles · 07/11/2021 14:59

My friend and her fiancé have one and they have no children. If you want one get one, don't let jealous people put you off!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/11/2021 14:59

does your mum suffer from crabs in a bucket mentality? mine does this exact same shit, not that I ever ask her, so I just ignore it.

don't listen to hear.
buy what you want

Aprilx · 07/11/2021 15:01

I don’t think it has anything to do with rich, poor or pretentiousness. It is all down to kitchen size and space. I have had an American style fridge freezer when I had a bigger kitchen, I don’t now as it won’t fit.

0palescent · 07/11/2021 15:03

Is your mum alright? We've had ours over 20 years, we're not rich. It's quite a standard thing these days, isn't it, they're hardly an elite thing!

Lottiethelemming · 07/11/2021 15:03

Thank you for all of your views so far.
I'm not concerned about the extra energy, I feel like it would counterbalance itself with the amount of food I end up throwing away!

My mum only works part time and she only has my teen brother at home so she has plenty of time to cook (delicious) meals every day.

I work a regular 9 to 5 so it would be nice to only cook 2 or 3 times a week max if I had the space to cook extra and store the leftovers.

We live in a 2 bed house with no storage space. Our dishwasher already sits in the middle of the kitchen!

We're hoping to buy next year but even so, we need the space now.

I'm going to go ahead and buy the style I want regardless of what mum thinks.

I've got 2 in mind...

Do you have enough space in the kitchen?
Normal appliances are 60cm wide but those are 90cm.

bellsbuss · 07/11/2021 15:10

We had one before we had children.

Biker47 · 07/11/2021 15:18

Don't understand how a certain type of fridge freezer can be pretentious and others aren't, I obviously don't share the same mindset as your mother. The fact that she thinks they're only for "rich families" is telling.

Lottiethelemming · 07/11/2021 15:25

Yes! The space is more than enough. It must be a sign!

OP posts:
Lottiethelemming · 07/11/2021 15:26

@biker47 my mum can be quite resentful at times. We haven't had the best relationship. She was absent throughout my childhood.

Definitely ignore her - I’m very jealous. Enjoy it
