Fridge Freezer

We have quite a big fridge freezer but it's a standard one, fridge up top, freezer below.

I do a big shop twice a month with smaller shops in between and there's just not enough space.

I also batch cook and I'm limited as to how much I can do it because I don't have the space.

I was talking to my mum about wanting an American-style fridge freezer. Mum, my sister, brother and 2 nephews are coming for Christmas this year so it was even more incentive to get one. Last year when it was just DP, our 2 boys and I, we had to do our Christmas food shopping the night before due to space issues!

She said they're only for rich families and we'd look silly if we got one for a small family of 4! We both work but were not rich! We have the space for one.

Are they pretentious?

If you have one, was it a good idea?

I'd appreciate any recommendations too!

Your mother has a serious chip on her shoulder. Ignore her nastiness and buy the appliance you need or want.

We have one. Family of three. Old style fridge is in garage and is the wine and beer fridge and overflow freezer for Xmas

Well, your mum is wrong. They are for people of any incoming bracket who needs to refrigerate/freeze food! Personally, I actually don’t rate American style fridge-freezers, the freezer part is never wide enough. For that reason, I’ve bought separate a tall free standing fridge and freezer, but there are six of us, so it makes sense.

@WorraLiberty

This is weird, I live in a borough with a very high poverty rate and these fridges are fairly common in lots of houses/flats?
I think that's partly because they're prioritising something that is for the benefit of the whole family (as compared to buying themselves a fancier pair of shoes or bed), want something 'nice' - because they do look and feel quite different - like the idea of chilled water and ice all the time as it saves money on other drinks - and partly because it means they can stock up and aren't left in a position of having no food in at the end of a long day at work, if there are further shortages and panic buying or if UC is stopped suddenly

I think I'd quite like one, but my old fridge is resolutely hanging on in there (bought when I lived in a tiny flat, so had no choice but to get an undercounter one) and, tbh, it's a PITA to reach the back of it when you have arthritis; I'm definitely not keen on kneeling on the floor to reach things.

Your better off getting a full size fridge and full size freezer and putting them side to side - flip the doors around if need be

Usually no more expensive than the us ones, you get a lot more room for both and if one fails, you only have to replace one.

Get matching ones from the same
Make/range and you cant really tell the diffeeence

Treacletreacle · 07/11/2021 16:18

We have one and actually I would say the freezer space isn't huge...the fridge is in comparison. So I would say do your research on models could you buy a small chest freezer to add to the fridge freezer you have now?

tootiredtobother · 07/11/2021 16:22

dont you lose freezer space if you have a plumbed one, as the gubbins for the ice box bit steps back into the freezer space ?

Niconacotaco · 07/11/2021 16:25

Check the freezer size, some are smaller than a standard fridge freezer.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/11/2021 16:28

Ours is great but has less freezer space than fridge space...

TheDeadlyNightShade · 07/11/2021 16:32

We found that the freezer on them weren’t any bigger than the freezer in our fridge freezer. Obviously the fridge is a lot bigger though. We got rid of ours and now have a tall fridge and a tall freezer side by side which has given us the room we need.

TheQueef · 07/11/2021 16:39

This is the one we have TooTired the entire top half of freezer door is the ice machine and inside the fridge is the water filter (mine doesn't have a water tank) it does have a silly little flexi pipe feed which I've accidentally cut through though.

It creates a kind of static field that attracts dust and cat hairs. Despite being larger than our downstairs lav, I regularly bang my shin on it.
I'm secretly hoping it dies soon so I can have a sensible replacement.

We have a big kitchen but no suitable spot for an American fridge freezer.
If we downsize, I will certainly look for a kitchen with room for one.
In Australia anything edible goes in the fridge. They are used like a pantry.
If you have room buy one.
Line with flexible mats to help with cleaning

MissConductUS · 07/11/2021 20:22

I'm an American and have a full sized LG top freezer fridge about the same size as the one you linked to. It's very quiet and works perfectly. We love ours.

HalloweenScrooge · 07/11/2021 20:25

We have one, but we have the Fisher and Paykel one which has double doors at the top for the fridge and a big drawer for the freezer. We love it.

cloverleafy · 07/11/2021 20:29

Ignore her. We have separate full height fridge and freezer - family of 5.

Dita73 · 07/11/2021 21:18

I’ve had a few. I wouldn’t recommend getting one with the skinny freezer on one side and the fridge on the other as the freezer space really isn’t great. I got this one and it’s really good. It’s a Haier and the great thing about them is they’re fairly basic. You don’t have to plumb it in,no bells and whistles, just plug it in and go and they do the job well. Fridge/freezer space is well distributed and more practical
