AIBU to find it utterly astounding that it's socially acceptable in England for pet cats to poop in other people's gardens??!

I honestly cannot get my head round this. We've moved into a new house and the garden is full of cat shit. Not a single cat owner I know has a little tray for their cat to use. Where do cat owners think their cats poop? Do you honestly not care that it's in other peoples gardens?
My dh is from in a country where this is not socially acceptable and cat owners have litter trays and the cats bloody use them.

@Mouseonmychair

Sigh there are different rules for cats despite the massive distribution they cause. They also have different rules if you happen to run them over in a car compared to a dog.

If I was you I would get a decent size dog with a moderately aggressive tendency. That will soon clear the cats that are quick enough to move.

Although you'll now have larger piles of dog shit to contend with, and toxic patches on the lawn where nothing will ever grow again Grin

@theemperorhasnoclothes

The problem is that cat poo is often very liquidy, whereas wild animals generally have dry poo that is easy to remove from grass. My kids have got cat poo in our garden all over themselves several times and it can be very dangerous for kids.

Totally agree with you OP it's disgusting.

Car poo shouldn't not be remotely liquidy. That's fox poo
Chelyanne · 07/11/2021 15:02

I let our dog chase the little gits away from our garden

We have a litter tray and I'd be mort

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 07/11/2021 15:05

I'll start again Grin
We have a litter tray and would be mortified if Dcat starting pooing in the neighbours gardens but short of follow her around what can I do. I was proud of her when she was urgently scratching at the door to come in then pooed in her litter tray though.

XelaM · 07/11/2021 15:07

@Chelyanne Me too! Hoping he scared them off for good. If their owners don't care what their "pets" do when they're free-roaming they only have themselves to blame if their cats get hurt by dogs or run over

XelaM · 07/11/2021 15:07

@Myusernameisnotmyusernameno Pay a company to cat-proof your garden

usernumberno46273 · 07/11/2021 15:09

Cats are feral so unavoidable, albeit disgusting.

We used to have a major issue with cats pooping in our garden - until we got a dog! They don't come in now. Although still find cat poo on our front garden where my dog doesn't go (not fenced).

I grew up in a house full of cats. There was a man behind us who you used to hear hugging and sweating to himself because of the amount of cat poop in his garden. My mum used to call him a grumpy git but I feel so sorry for him now having had the same issue!

Porcupineintherough · 07/11/2021 15:13

Most cats are not feral, they are pets. They dont have to roam, they could be confined to their owners properties much as dogs are.

ProfessionalWeirdo · 07/11/2021 15:15

@DrManhattan

So grim. Agree with you op but i don't have any answers.
Ditto. I'd also love to know why it seems to be socially acceptable to dislike dogs but not socially acceptable to dislike cats.
debwong · 07/11/2021 15:17

I have heard that if you ask the zoo for a bit of lion poo to put in the garden it scares them off as they don't want to have a territorial dispute with a lion. I don't know if you just end up with a garden smelling of lion poo instead of cat poo.

But the problem then is that it attracts lionesses.

Mercurial123 · 07/11/2021 15:17

Move to a flat with no garden, problem solved.

Yeah cause I can afford that Hmm. There's also lots of cats that come in our garden. Tbh my cat doesn't go far since she once went missing for a weekend.

Brilliant! 🤣😂
XelaM · 07/11/2021 15:21

@Myusernameisnotmyusernameno Then don't have a cat!!!!!

Blondiney · 07/11/2021 15:21

I like cats, their shit not so much. You’d think having three ‘lively’ dogs would deter them but nope, my front garden often has a little brown gift.

AnkleDeep · 07/11/2021 15:22

It isn't socially acceptable but cat owners are innately selfish and don't care.

Porcupineintherough · 07/11/2021 15:22

@debwong there's been research on that one. Lion poo deters deer but a) it stinks and b) the effect only lasts for about a week or til the next heavy rain. It's basically really, big, smelly cat shit so doesnt really help if that's the problem you are trying to solve.

NigellaSeed · 07/11/2021 15:23

Question to cat owners. Is it okay for neighbour to throw your cats shit over the fence into your garden? As in, your cat, your responsibility. Is that okay?

Rainbowcake88 · 07/11/2021 15:25

I have had many cats over the years, they all have peed and pooped discreetly in a bush. No need for litter trays when they are doing something natural in nature. Dogs shit where they like no discrete about it. Foxes go where they like too. Living in the country we are used to all manner of shit, horses, sheep, cows... obviously not in our garden but everywhere else. It's life. move on.

You would need to ensure it was the correct cat to the correct neighbour! Difficult I would imagine, as if you see them doing in you'd just chase them away?
BigHuff · 07/11/2021 15:27
@PickUpAPepper ok so people don't have cats. Then what? Cats will still exist. Shelters will be overrun or they will just roam feral and breed. Thus creating more cats/shit.

You don't have to like them but why not try to accept that they are as much a part of the planet as you or I and you can't just eradicate something because it annoys you.
Yes, cats will still exist. But currently cats exist in unnatural numbers; there are almost 11 million in the UK. And more than 12 million dogs. Pet ownership is at an unprecedented level - it can't continue like this!
