How to hang out socks to dry

Of course the correct way is by placing the peg on the foot side (and the down side, not the top).

But DP hangs them by the top of the leg side , and thus a peg mark could be visible. Angry Like on the photo, but only one side, not both.
To be fair, hanging by the foot side could possibly lead to holes (doubt it), and by the top could (maybe) dry them faster.

Let me know if IABU (I'm not) and give me more arguments pro-foot side - the correct way.

I hang socks from the top, so bugs can’t get inside them while they’re drying.

I hang trousers from the ankles, otherwise the legs blow around and get all tangled on the line.

I hang tops from the bottom, I don’t understand why you would peg tops from the armpits?

diddl · 06/11/2021 15:51

@jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey

If you wear it on the bottom half then peg it at the top. If you wear it on your top half then you peg it on the bottom. These are the pegging rules ! No??
No.

You peg tops by their bottom & bottoms by their tops.

Underwear are neither bottoms nor tops!

supersop60 · 06/11/2021 15:54

My socks don't have peg marks. Maybe you need new pegs???

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/11/2021 16:04

I'll ask my House Manager and see how she does it.

I'll get back to you.

WaltzForDebbie · 06/11/2021 16:07

@EverNapping

Tops - pegged at the armpits Trousers - pegged at the waist Socks - pegged either end

This is sacrosanct.

my parents do tops at the shoulders/waist and it pains me

Noooo. You can't peg the top of trousers because you need the thickest part (the bum area) to have all the air circulating round.

Same with tops. Peg at the bottom so they dry quicker!

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 06/11/2021 16:09

@Lweji

Maybe time to get some new pegs?

Maybe I'll get a dedicated sock peg basket. Some of my pegs leave less of a mark. Hmmm...

Ok, less of a problem in winter, sure. But, sometimes, the trousers lift up when sitting and the top of the socks can be seen.

I know this is light hearted but I can assure you at the age of 41 I've never paid any attention to the top of peoples socks. Do you have the worlds most rare fetish?

Tbf though I never hand socks on a line, too much faff so they go on a clothes horse either inside or in the garden season dependent.

diddl · 06/11/2021 16:11

I don't really think that there are any "rules" that work for all though are there?

Some tops I think can be pegged at the bottom & others need to be put over & pegged at the armpits.

nannybeach · 06/11/2021 16:13

By the tops, one side only so you have maximum air circulation through them. Trousers bottom of the leg,one side only, waist is the thickest part, you want maximum air circulation there as well. Peg marks on socks!! Well, iron them,(that is sarcasm!!)

FuzzyPuffling · 06/11/2021 16:14

By the toe on the socktopus.

At the armpit?! How?!
Alldressedup · 06/11/2021 16:23

You lot are drying amateurs!
You definitely peg socks by the toe. Peg them in pairs then once dry, whilst still pegged to the line, fold the tops/cuffs of the pair together. Once you un-peg they’re ready to go straight into the drawer. Genius.

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 06/11/2021 16:37

If you want them to dry as quickly and thoroughly as possible then peg one side of the top only, so only one thickness of fabric is caught under the peg.

Same for the waists of trousers - back bit only, fly open so that it can all get dry evenly. It leaves marks on the trousers but they dry reliably and fully on the line, and I always iron cotton trousers anyway, which is the only sort I wear.

OH MY GOODNESS ME YOU HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE
purplesequins · 06/11/2021 16:41

yabu
on a socktopus here. peg on one part of the leg opening. 2 socks per peg.

TrivialSoul · 06/11/2021 16:47

We use a socktopus here too but we call it a sock-hanger-upper. I peg the socks in pairs by the top of them. One layer of each sock in the same peg. My teenagers peg socks inside out, upside down and not in pairs... They still dry but it annoys me. If dh were to hang socks up I genuinely wouldn't care what way they were pegged, I'd be booking him a doctors appointment since I would be sure that it was an indication of a grave illness!

diddl · 06/11/2021 16:51

"Peg them in pairs then once dry, whilst still pegged to the line, fold the tops/cuffs of the pair together. Once you un-peg they’re ready to go straight into the drawer."

That's what I usually do (thanks Mum!)

I do sometimes leave the socks for their owners to pair.

DappledThings · 06/11/2021 16:59

Socks are pegged the right way up with the peg going inside the sock thereby pegging the least amount of material and reducing the drying time.

And always pegged in pairs. Unpaired socks on the line is but one step from total anarchy.

PuppyMonkey · 06/11/2021 17:03

I don't peg socks at all, I just drape them around the rim of my wash basket and leave that out and they dry that way.

That's in summer if I hang washing out anyway. Don't bother doing that in winter, they dry on the airer over the radiator.

QuornSausagesAreTheDevilsPenis · 06/11/2021 17:26

Pegged at the ARMPITS??! Shock Savages.

Socks are pegged at the toe, pairs together. That way you can bundle them straight together when you take them off the line and you should have no singletons (except for ds2 who is never actually known to wear a matching pair).

? works equally well if you pair them and peg at the top properly
