AIBU to say that the Tories, the party that brought us Brexit, are NOT the party of fiscal responsibility?

The Tories have always borrowed more than Labour, and always repaid less: they are the party of big deficit spending -

Wasnt it the Labour Party who reputedly left office with a note saying "There is No money"

What is your point in relation to the facts?

The facts show Tories spend more, repay less.

They also increase taxes whilst claiming to be a low tax party.

Those are the facts.

Yes it was Liam Byrne who wrote 'Dear chief secretary, I'm afraid to tell you there's no money left.'

I actually admired Gordon Brown for calling that woman a bigot. She bloody was! Or certainly chose to portray herself as one.

The Tories have fucked us all over well and truly, I can only assume some people enjoy that! 🙄

It always seems to come up on the Covid threads I read: 'The government don't care about you/education/mental health, they only care about the economy.' Well, they don't care much for the economy either...

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/12/2021 12:38

I read somewhere that theCBI prefer Starmer. Never ever ever thought they would prefer a Labour minister!

GlitterNails · 23/12/2021 12:48

Yes Labour left that note AFTER years of doing well for the economy and clearing debt left by the Tories, followed by a worldwide economic crash that was nothing to do with them.

The Tories borrow more each time yet some people only remember the note and the crash, not all the good work before. It's also shown Labour as a government do better with the economy overall but people believe the myth the Torys are the party of the economy which is nonsense.

And then they have brought about Brexit - who whether you agree with it or not is going to take years to recover from, but now they have the excuse of covid to point to when Brexit is still doing a lot of damage.

It all makes me sad as it's the vulnerable that suffer under the Tories while people keep voting for them under the delusion they are better for the economy.

They don't care about the economy. They care about money. Specifically, keeping all the money in their pockets, and siphoning taxpayers money off to their millionaire mates from school.

They’re not really Conservatives anymore- it’s UKIP in disguise. DC effectively handed over control to the ERG when he lost his gamble, they have far more in common with UKIP than (most of) the Tories ever did.

The effects are starting to become clear, there are no meaningful trade deals available and the trade we do with Europe is plummeting. The next few years we will be reaping what we sow, starting in the new year once the new border controls kick in. That’s the price you pay for an isolationist, rose tinted specs approach to running a country.

Valeriekat · 24/12/2021 04:42

Didn't we have a referendum about leaving the EU?
Many CONSERVATIVE MPs were/are very pro Europe.
