Do you care about climate change?

julieca · 05/11/2021 08:19

Not just in an abstract way. But would you be prepared to accept radical changes to your lifestyle to reduce climate change?
Or do you think continuing to live your life the way you want is more important?

YABU - No I don't and I want to continue living life as I want
YANBU - Yes I do and would accept major changes to my life

And as long as Greta, XR and Insulate Britain carry on preaching and aggregating everyone I have no intention of doing any more, and 8n fac5 am close to stopping what I do do

Well, that'll really show them all, won't it? Hmm

garlicandsapphires · 05/11/2021 12:15

I would like to care more but it feels somewhat hopeless so I struggle to.
Everyone needs to stop flying - completely- including me, and I don’t know that I’m committed enough to never fly again.

ItsSunnyOutside · 05/11/2021 12:18

Yes. I have a child and I want to leave the world in a better place for her and her children, should she choose to have them.
It's that simple.

I'm not perfect by any means, but I believe EVERYONE can do their bit. Even if it's just small changes.

It's not rocket science, but some people like to stick their head in the sand , so it seems.

JadeSeahorse · 05/11/2021 12:24

Im a bit on the fence!

I now do all my washing - including dishwasher - on Eco programmes.
I am excellent at recycling and have certainly turned down the central heating a notch or two. We also drive a hybrid car!

However, we do enjoy luxury travel and eating meat. Not prepared to give those up as life wouldn’t be worth living. I’m also dead against those useless heat pumps they’ve are hoping to introduce.

My overall opinion is I’m not prepared to exist miserably so people in the future can live much better. I probably sound rather shallow but we won’t have ancestors to worry about. We only have one dd who has sld so she will never marry or have dc. We Intend for the 3 of us to have the best life possible and then once we are all gone our line will end.

julieca · 05/11/2021 12:24

But where would you even buy cheap cuts of meat? I remember buying pigs trotters from the Co-op. You simply can't now. These cuts of meat seem to have become the province of posh butchers in leafy villages.

Yes it will - if the end result of their protests is that they don't grow support for the issue but instead turn people off engaging and acting. A movement is supposed to encourage people to follow, to influence, to vote accordingly, to exert pressure - not to get so pissed off that they no longer listen or care.
JadeSeahorse · 05/11/2021 12:25

They are hoping 🙄

HermioneWeasley · 05/11/2021 12:31

I care about climate change but know that anything I might personally do makes no difference when the biggest global contributors aren’t interested. When that’s sorted I’ll consider it, no point in the meantime

ComtesseDeSpair · 05/11/2021 12:39

Consumers have to create the demand. Twenty years ago things like plant milk, tofu, vegan cheese and environmentally friendly cleaning products could only be found in specialist health food and hippy shops. Now they’re on the shelves of every supermarket and even small corner shops will usually stock Alpro and Ecover products.

In the meantime, Chinese supermarkets stock trotters, chicken feet, tongue, tripe etc. They aren’t viewed as crap in Chinese cuisines.

julieca · 05/11/2021 12:40

@SirChenjins it is too late to influence the public to make changes on their own. These activists know that. Drastic action is needed.

julieca · 05/11/2021 12:41

@ComtesseDeSpair I dont see it happening. It was only poor people like me buying those things. Because chicken breasts and steaks do taste better.

Yes and I fear for my son's future to the extent that I wish I'd ignored my desire to reproduce because it was selfish to bring a kid into this shitshow.

I feel this way. When I had my DC 20 years ago, it didn't seem to be so bad ( or maybe I ignored the warnings). I have told DC not to have any children of their own, but who knows if they will listen...
SirenSays · 05/11/2021 12:49

I care and I'm willing to make whatever changes are neccasary. The way we've treated the planet is disgusting.

A groundswell of opposition to the status quo drives policy and legislative change and you get that by changing public attitudes. If people start turning against these groups and start to actively fight against them then politicians won't move quickly - they are more concerned about staying in power.

julieca · 05/11/2021 12:59

@SirChenjins honestly people have been trying that for decades with little success. These extreme tactics are being tried because the reasonable influencing tactics have not worked.

OP posts:
SirChenjins · 05/11/2021 13:08

Yes, and these things take a huge amount of time - it won’t happen in a few years even. The extreme tactics of XR and the eco warriors before them aren’t doing anything beyond pissing people off - a perfect excuse for Govts not to act because ‘the public don’t want it’

julieca · 05/11/2021 13:13

But people have been trying for decades. And what have we got? Charging for plastic bags? That is literally about it. It will never achieve what is needed.

They're two separate things. Yes, I care about climate change- I really believe that things are headed in a terrible direction and I'm scared for the future.

No, I don't think that making changes to my lifestyle will make much difference but yes, I would change my lifestyle if I thought it would make any difference- including bigger things such as becoming vegan.

All of the household emissions in the UK account for 0.2% of overall emissions (we contribute 1% overall but 0.2% are from households)- so even if everyone turned off every appliance they owned and did everything they could at home it would make a negligible amount of difference unfortunately.

Instead I think that big companies need to be accountable for their actions and there needs to be huge investment into technology that will affect climate change.

We'll then the public needs to step up.

At least XR are willing to take a stand.

Having a road blocked for a week is not as inconvenient as the increasing extremes in temperature we're seeing currently contributing to 5m deaths annually.

nanbread · 05/11/2021 13:23

Yep

Oil companies need to pay tax for starters. It's outrageous they currently don't in many instances.

Water companies need to be hit not with fines for polluting, but with other measures that actually hurt.

WAY too many businesses globally purposefully take the fine for polluting illegally as it's cheaper and less hassle than disposing of it the legal way.

picklemewalnuts · 05/11/2021 13:24

@PlanDeRaccordement

sone does 3D printing which requires resin in 1L bottles, alcohol, and loads of plastic waste and I fret.

My friend runs a 3D resin printing business and he uses environmentally friendly plant based resin made from soybean oil. It has no BPA, no benzene, no VOCs, and is fully compostable. It is called ANYCUBIC Plant-based 3D Printing Resin.

There’s no “plastic” in his products.

Thank you so much! I'll talk to him about it.
Drumshambo · 05/11/2021 13:25

If, as we are being told that we're all doomed, and we have only so many years to save the planet, then surely most of us will take the decision to carry on our lives as best we can and enjoy every moment. For me, that means several holidays abroad every year amongst other things. I will continue is to do this for as long as I am in good health and can afford it. Everyone I know feels the same.

HoldingTheDoor · 05/11/2021 13:26

HoldingTheDoor · 05/11/2021 13:26

Let's just hope that you know about two people.
