Do you care about climate change?

julieca · 05/11/2021 08:19

Not just in an abstract way. But would you be prepared to accept radical changes to your lifestyle to reduce climate change?
Or do you think continuing to live your life the way you want is more important?

YABU - No I don't and I want to continue living life as I want
YANBU - Yes I do and would accept major changes to my life

I would support radical change, but I think everyone needs to be in it together. I think we need policies that aren't linked to wealth like food rationing to limit meat consumption and global speed limits - I'd start at 50mph on motorways and probably aim to go lower after a few years.

Drumshambo · 06/11/2021 18:09

@nanbread. All the angst and handringing in the world won't make a blind bit of difference. More fool you. If you choose not to see your family because of some misguided attempt at martydom.

Beckert · 06/11/2021 18:20

The government need to provide solar panels for every house and insulate them...just for a starter

Whose paying for that?

Beckert · 06/11/2021 18:23

I'm going to vote Green bit most people vote Tory as their logic is that there us no point voting for any other party...then they wonder why we are so screwed.

I wouldn't vote for a party that doesn't understand what a woman is. Gender politics is the greens thing these days. Go with them, we're screwed anyway. Well, women will be anyway. I'm voting Tory.

tempchecked · 06/11/2021 18:35

Ah, the new religion aimed at those that can least afford it. Messiahs, acolytes, altars of shame.

I will not do a bloody thing other than the things I can do without sacrificing my current quality of life. There is no way I will reduce my comforts for some preachers who (like many a religion with scandals attached) say "do as I say, not as I do".

I refuse to justify going to any lengths unless they are mandated and certain behaviours are banned for ALL, not just the congregation of the bewildered and guilt ridden. Make it easy and cost free and I will consider it.

Beckert · 06/11/2021 18:47

Yep. And how are ordinary people going to afford a heat pump. Thousands and thousands of pounds. That people haven't got. I'll just burn wood instead.

DdraigGoch · 06/11/2021 20:12

@Mynameismargot

Honestly as a person of limited financial means I feel like there is very little else I can do. We are vegetarian, we buy pretty much everything we need second hand, no crazy consumerism because we can't afford it. We hardly drive any where. We can't change our car to a more eco friendly elecrric/hybrid car because we can't afford it. We don't have our heating on much because we can't afford it. We don't fly because we can't afford it.

I feel like there is this messaging that we all should be doing more and more and more and tbh I feel like what else do you want from me? Our life choices are very much dictated by finances right now. All of this talk of radical changes and I'm feel like I'm just here trying to make it through to my next pay day.

People on low incomes aren't the problem. You can't afford to pollute, so you don't. So your conscience can mostly rest easy, it sounds like most of the changes needed are already part of your lifestyle.
DecadentlyDecisive · 06/11/2021 22:44

To quote the song Greta and her creepy supporters were singing...

"You can stick climate change up your arse".... Wink

Not sure that was the message they meant to put across, but none of the supporters would dare to tell Emperor Greta that....

@Drumshambo

If, as we are being told that we're all doomed, and we have only so many years to save the planet, then surely most of us will take the decision to carry on our lives as best we can and enjoy every moment. For me, that means several holidays abroad every year amongst other things. I will continue is to do this for as long as I am in good health and can afford it. Everyone I know feels the same.
While I can't generally stand XR, if they want to blockade departures at Heathrow, I've no objection. Stopping the likes of you chucking out several tonnes of CO2 on each of those holidays is worth it.

Rather than waiting for China to change, let’s stop buying shit that’s made there

Which will lead to factories shutting down, millions losing their only income and millions starving to death.

RAFHercules · 07/11/2021 01:42

Oh wait, I forgot about the x factor type fans who don't care about anything except image and shit pop culture.
I am lucky enough to own a bit of woodland which we are protecting for everyone.

Aw well done, that's bound to fix it all.

If we continue as we are then starving to death will be a reality for the world. Crop failures are already happening. If we don’t keep global temperatures down, don’t tackle loss of biodiversity and soil degradation, then food will get harder and harder to grow. We are totally dependent on the earth to sustain us so we need to look after it.

cloudtree · 07/11/2021 08:10

Yes but it requires balance. We have solar panels (or we will next week when they’re installed), my ancient car is about to die so we will replace with an ev, we don’t buy much in terms of “stuff”, we recycle and reuse loads, we’ve massively reduced our meat consumption. But we will still go abroad once a year (reduced from probably three times) for a holiday because it’s not just my views that count in the family and we want that experience for the dc.

malificent7 · 07/11/2021 08:53

I think it us important to make small changed but big business needs to change do.
Things i am willing to do:
Shampoo bars and soap instead of bottles.
Go veggie/ vegan perhaps.
Recycle
Walk more instead of car
Buy second hand
Boycott Macdonalds etc

What i am not prepared to do:
Give up the odd foreign holiday.

FallenMadonnawiththeBadBoobies · 07/11/2021 08:57

I have voted YANBU, although I accept that I need to do much more myself.

However, there are issues which should be tackled which no-one appears to consider or talk about, such as Bitcoin. What on earth is the point of it other than to make a limited number of people wealthy? I can only assume not many people know about its huge impact - See this article youmatter.world/en/bitcoin-bad-environment-impact/

This sort of thing needs to be tackled right now.

If we focus on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index from Cambridge University, Bitcoin’s bad impact on the environment raises – compared to the Digiconomist’s Index – to an electric consumption of 133.68 TWh per year.

That makes Bitcoin’s impact on the environment equivalent to a country like Sweden’s and its 131.80TWh annual electricity consumption. Or similar to the consumption of countries like Poland (152.57TWh/year) Egipt (150.58TWh/year), Malaysia (147.21TWh/year), Ukraine (128.81TWh/year), or Argentina (125.03TWh/year).

bordermidgebite · 07/11/2021 09:54

The thing with Bitcoin is that distributed ledgers can exist that don't use so much energy so it really is just about spending energy to make people rich

Elephantsparade · 07/11/2021 09:59

I do care about climate change but realistically I struggle to make meaninful changes to my life as its all so complex and I dont really want to be uncomfortable.

bordermidgebite · 07/11/2021 10:00

If you don't get used to making changes snd government don't get their acts together you may have to get used to being very uncomfortable

bordermidgebite · 07/11/2021 10:02

Although everyone has different capacity for making changes ,

the wealthier should have more capacity and since they tend to burn more , their changes can have bigger impacts

Beckert · 07/11/2021 10:43

I am lucky enough to own a bit of woodland which we are protecting for everyone.

Grin Aww thanks. That's very kind of you to protect your woodland for everyone. I'm sure it will make a big difference. Will you be inviting everyone to come and enjoy your woodland with you? Or will you be keeping it all for yourself?
I take it you have the money to purchase your heat pump as well?

FixItUpChappie · 07/11/2021 15:04

I am no eco activist but I don't really get the aggressive dislike of people who do care or the "fuck tree huggers" mentality.

I mean....I like trees? I may be lazy but I like clean water too? Clean air seems like a win win 🤷‍♀️

Its hardly greatly sacrificing to look for some candidates in local/federal elections who do care and give them a license to do what your too busy or weary or whatever to do - not let a factory upstream of your city/village dump toxic chemicals into the river you get your water from, not let developers pave over local wetlands which capture carbon, foster biodiversity and reduce flooding - yes even to protect some trees so we have air to breathe and beautiful wild spaces to enjoy.

If you feel you can't or know you won't do anything at least throw your vote to someone who will....that's the most impactful thing most can do and it's quite straight forward IMO.

Suzi888 · 07/11/2021 15:08

Yes I’d support it and major change will happen. The world is not a nice place and I think it’ll get much worse before we become extinct/the planet dies.
