Do you care about climate change?

julieca · 05/11/2021 08:19

Not just in an abstract way. But would you be prepared to accept radical changes to your lifestyle to reduce climate change?
Or do you think continuing to live your life the way you want is more important?

YABU - No I don't and I want to continue living life as I want
YANBU - Yes I do and would accept major changes to my life

@Beckert

No I don't care. Species become extinct, humans are no different.
Can I ask, do you have dc?
Beckert · 05/11/2021 19:43

Yes I do.

MarshaBradyo · 05/11/2021 19:44

Do you worry about increased hardship they may face or their dc?

Beckert · 05/11/2021 19:44

Not really no.

MarshaBradyo · 05/11/2021 19:45

Because you don’t think it will happen or just not bothered about it being harder?

Beckert · 05/11/2021 19:45

You're making an assumption they will have DC. I'm not convinced that they will.

MarshaBradyo · 05/11/2021 19:46

I have no idea if they will or not.

Just trying to gain understanding into other types of thinking

Beckert · 05/11/2021 19:46

I'm not bothered. I think the earth would be better off without the human species tbh.

twinkletoesimnot · 05/11/2021 19:47

@MareofBeasttown
Yes I noticed that too. Fair point. I think the amount we fly is a big issue.

Has to be said that whatever a tiny island like us does compared to China, India, USA is just not going to cut it.

Not saying we shouldn't do our bit but it does seem like it's a futile effort.

julieca · 05/11/2021 19:49

@twinkletoesimnot but most people in China and India have a much lower carbon footprint than we do. What pushes the carbon footprint higher for those countries is they make so many things for us. They should be counted as our carbon footprint, but they are not.

I am from India:) Hence the long haul flight to see my family, which clearly is much worse for the environment than I had thought, and cancels out all the stuff I do right.

I would agree that most people in India have a lower carbon footprint. My mother, for instance, who leads a very simple life. But we are too dependent on fossil fuels and we have a stupid, shortsighted government.

@Jellykat

Anyfucker and derxa and where does that leave the poorest countries, drought ridden because climate change has meant it hasnt rained for 4 years? they cant grow anything, they cannot keep animals, they cannot breastfeed their babies.. how does your not giving a toss help them? Climate change awareness is not just for the privileged, thats a huge cop out!
This ^ Thank you @Jellykat. I couldn't have worded it better 👏
derxa · 05/11/2021 20:22

how does your not giving a toss help them? I do give a toss actually. These people need help right now and that takes money and changes in government policies all over the world. Being awfully concerned on MN doesn't change a thing

Bdelder · 05/11/2021 20:23

@Beckert I agree with you, I’m eco conscious - always have been - but i realised a long time ago it’s not going to make any difference as you can’t control humanity. I’m not worried. We’ve had it good for so long, we should count our blessings and be grateful for the good run we’ve had.

I have young children and focus on building resilience in them to cope with the future. I actually had a spiritual vision of the future a few years ago ... broke down in tears. But then I started to practice gratitude and live in the present. What is the point in worrying about the future when you have no control of it? Just live in the here and now and be happy.

I don’t drive, haven’t flown for years and live very simply. So thinking like this hasn’t changed my lifestyle, but it will make me a happier person. I live in an area that floods and will be under water in a few years, so the threat is imminent for me personally and I’m still quite young.

I truly believe that if governments start making drastic changes that reduce people’s living standards/ freedoms overnight, they’ll just get voted out because most people don’t care. So we’ll get more extreme government in power and it will get worse. It’s only by making green choices economically attractive that we will see mass change. And the only hope for that is scientific advancement and cheaper, effective green technology.

We all need to accept that our lives will probably be shorter and harder going forward and make peace with that.

Viviennemary · 05/11/2021 20:25

No. Not till population control is tackled.

Beckert · 05/11/2021 20:31

I agree.

MarshaBradyo · 05/11/2021 20:33

I often see threads on here about having dc and how it makes you worry rated quite highly (although I don’t quite match that most of the time)

But these threads seem the opposite as in people are just accepting of hardship

I think it comes down to the type of question but I’d say I’m in the middle to easy going generally but can’t quite get the we’ll die out stuff. Not that fussed etc

Generally trying to look after next generation is high priority. I’m not having a go at anyone just musing on different types of responses

Bdelder · 05/11/2021 20:33

One thing that has baffled me is that emissions globally rose when the world’s economies shut down due to Covid. So if that didn’t have an impact, what will?!

julieca · 05/11/2021 20:35

Bugger that I am not accepting my life being shorter. I have teenagers. I want to see grandkids and be involved, not just accept dying.

Only when big businesses, supermarkets, the rich and famous and government make massive changes themselves. There needs to be a big overhaul at the top worldwide.Consumers making changes in one country won't do enough. When this is done I will but I won't be dictated to whilst others aren't doing anything.

I heard an explanation of that in terms of an analogy of a water running into a container and the container is overflowing. The reduction in emissions meant that the water rushing out of the tap was slowed but didn't stop so the container was still overflowing. Or something.
Bdelder · 05/11/2021 20:44

@MarshaBradyo I have a working class background. My dad grew up dirt poor, no shoes, left school at primary school age, 1 of 10 children. His grandad was one of 20+. My mum lost most of her family when they were very young and had to raise the remaining child as an older teen. My extended family are all grafters, many have not a pot to piss in but are happy, so to speak! They get by on charm!

I grew up in a fairly low income household, no savings. So perhaps it’s easier for me to imagine a life of extreme hardship as it’s not so far removed and I have been taught the coping mechanisms to cope?

I have noticed that the environmental movement is very middle class and white. perhaps because they are more scared and think longer term? I don’t know

Beckert · 05/11/2021 20:45

Bugger that I am not accepting my life being shorter. I have teenagers. I want to see grandkids and be involved, not just accept dying

Well that's up to you. You may find you have no choice in the end.

AnyFucker · 05/11/2021 23:09

I just read that Boris Johnson and Prince Charles got private jet transport (separately) from the COP thingy

And Leonardo di Fucking Caprio appeared out of the air somehow

They are taking the piss and all the earnest types having a go at the likes of me living a quiet life and not going nuts about climate change can just fuck right off

ThePunnyMonster · 05/11/2021 23:23

I only have one child. I’m a vegetarian. I grow some of my own vegetables and fruit. The majority of my clothes are second hand. I wish I was more eco UNfriendly tbh because just fuck all the politicians and celebrities going on about it. I don’t want to do what a bunch of hypocrites are telling me to do.
