To reveal or not to reveal

Please help me revolve this minor domestic disagreement in the potato household

Which looks better?
YABU Roman blind inside window reveal
YANBU Roman blind outside window reveal

Window is North facing and for a dressing area in a bedroom. If it is positioned outside I will put it higher up than shown so it doesn't block the light when open.

Outside because inside will cut out a lot of light. Roman blinds can be bulky when open and you need to max light in a north facing room.

MazzleDazzle · 05/11/2021 07:11

In this house it’s roller blinds inside, Roman blinds outside - always!

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 05/11/2021 07:16

What MazzleDazzle says. Roller blinds inside as neater. Roman blinds outside as block too much light from top of window otherwise

GaryLurcher19 · 05/11/2021 07:32

I put YABU because I can't really see a difference.

It looks great. But equally so either way.

Inside. Outside always looks a bit CBA.

londonrach · 05/11/2021 08:15

Inside but light get past but really doN t like outside. As long as not a bedroom go for inside

stairgates · 05/11/2021 08:18

My eyes aren't very good this morning but does it have a radiator below it? I've voted inside, neater and if its is a radiator the heat will go straight to the window if outside if that makes sense

22Giraffes · 05/11/2021 08:18

Inside looks much better.

QueenOfCakeandCoffee · 05/11/2021 08:27

Outside!

Bontanics · 05/11/2021 08:49

I'm not sure I understand which is inside and which is outside. What is a reveal?

hotmeatymilk · 05/11/2021 08:52

@Bontanics The first picture is “inside” – close to the window, with the hole in the wall – the reveal – visible. Second picture is “outside”, with the blind on the main wall hiding the hole entirely.

hennybeans · 05/11/2021 08:57

I think outside but I see more disagree with me.

I always thought roller blind goes inside and Roman blind goes outside.

I think Roman blind inside will block too much light as you can't really roll it up all the way. Google image search of Roman blinds and see what most comes up.

FluffyBooBoo · 05/11/2021 08:57

@Dollywilde

I prefer outside the window, purely for a practical reason - if you have stuff on the window sill, it won’t get knocked off when you pull the blind down.
Exactly what I was going to say.

Plus imo it looks neater.

Froppysue · 05/11/2021 08:59

Inside, but bring it further forward so it’s sitting flush with the wall

Singinghollybob · 05/11/2021 09:02

Inside for me

LilyTheMink · 05/11/2021 09:04

Outside

Geppili · 05/11/2021 09:05

Inside. Where is the print from? It is gorgeous!

BeanyBops · 05/11/2021 09:06

Inside. Nice Emma J Shipley too!!

LilyTheMink · 05/11/2021 09:10

I think you mean inside or outside the recess and not the reveal, which is just the piece of wall that goes back from the front to the window
....
Traditional technique is to make the roman blind start 10cm above recess and finish 10cm below. And wider by about 5cm either side.

You can play with proportion to make the window appear taller or wider if the room need it.

Inside the recess will look a bit mean and not as luxurious. It also harder to get it to fit exactly with the sides of the recess.

MangoBiscuit · 05/11/2021 09:15

I prefer inside here, because it's easier to stop light leaks, it makes the room look bigger, and I like being able to access whatever is on the windowsill when the blind is closed. Also, it takes up no space inside the room (we have one in the toilet, moved to inside because I kept clipping it with my shoulder when cleaning)

An extra bonus for your set up, if it's inside, and your radiator is on, you are less likely to lose heat between the blind and the window.

All of that said, if you prefer the way it looks outside of the recess, do that.
