AM I a wimp to go to minor injuries tomorrow

Reallybloodypainful · 04/11/2021 22:15

My wrist was mildly painful like an rsi type pain that goes away with rest. Two days ago I picked up son and it was a sudden sharp pain. Been painful since but was able to go about normal activities. Tonight so painful I have cried a little. Hand feels vaguely tingly and I feel like I'm going to be sick.

Is there any chance I have an actual injury. I can move my fingers albeit difficult. So assume not. Also given how to pain started must likely tendon. Definitely not a break.

You definitely need to get it checked out anyway. Things can break without an impact also.
Good luck tomorrow.

3luckystars · 04/11/2021 22:20

Could it be carpal tunnel? My colleague had that and it was incredibly painful.

EgonSpengler2020 · 04/11/2021 22:24

Sounds like tendonitis. Buy some OTC diclofenac (assuming okay to take nsaid) and speak to your GP, or self refer to physio if your practice offers that service.

Theunamedcat · 04/11/2021 22:24

I once had agonising pain in my finger I looked at it and watched the bruise form rapidly I was literally sat watching television there was no impact or anything I didn't move it just ruptured infront of me

So shit can happen sometimes

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 04/11/2021 22:36

I tore ligaments in my thumb by hyperextending it in my sleep, and it was incredibly painful. Minor injuries were fab and strapped it with Elastoplast tape so it was immobile for a week. I don’t think I could have managed it at home.

Reallybloodypainful · 04/11/2021 22:37

Probably something like tendonitis. I am a wimp. Its so painful . Will be a wait of a week or more for GP. I'll just have to toughen up!

Tiddlypompadour · 04/11/2021 22:49

I went to minor injuries with a tendonitis that was so acutely painful and developed a bit of a lump. They xrayed to make sure it wasn’t broken or anything sinister, gave me a brace and painkillers and then referred me back to GP to be referred on for a steroid injection.

Reallybloodypainful · 04/11/2021 23:21

It was the level of pain made me think something had ruptured but reading it could be tendonitis or carpal tunnel. Cocodamol has helped.
Steroid injection sounds painful.

PurpleNebula84 · 05/11/2021 01:30

How old is your son? Is he a newborn?
I suffered De Quervain's Tendeosynovitis and was exacerbated by trying to pick up my daughter.
It had started in my last few weeks of pregnancy and thankfully had mentioned it at a doctor's appt and he made a referral - when my DD was 5 weeks old I had an appointment with muscular skeletal and had a steroid injection that day - changed everything and the injection wasn't painful at all.

Reallybloodypainful · 05/11/2021 07:44

He's older actually. A big 7 year old lump!
Feel a bit sheepish as it is much much better this morning so clearly not anything serious. Bit swollen and tender but nothing worse. It really was agony last night but I was driving for a few hours yesterday so maybe that was the problem.

OP posts:
PurpleNebula84 · 05/11/2021 09:15

I definitely don't think YABU to go and get it checked out - if it's painful and swollen - something isn't right x

girlmom21 · 05/11/2021 09:24

It'll only flare up again if you leave it. Get it checked out!

MakingTheBestOfIt · 05/11/2021 09:24

Oh my goodness, this happened twice to me within a 12 month period, then never again! I had completely forgotten about it! Did you ever find out what caused it?

OP - I hope you feel better soon Flowers

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 05/11/2021 09:27

It could be a stress fracture. Damaged ligament or tendon. A sprain... either way, the longer you leave it, the worse it will get.

My DH broke his thumb last year, ignored it (and all advice to get it checked out) and now has a permanently dis-formed thumb and arthritis in it too.

There is nothing 'wimpy' about seeking medical help.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 05/11/2021 09:31

YABVU for not having gone yet

DS4 accidentaly banged his hand & fingers on his locker at school .
Came home told me it was a bit painful but ok. had a bruise.
4 hours later it was so much worse we went to A&E as I suspected a fracture on his pinky.

the X-ray showed he had not 1, but 3 fingers injured with what's called a boxer's fracture!😱
We were stunned!

so don't be daft. just go an get seen asap

Persephoned · 05/11/2021 13:56

Why are you going to wait a week to see the GP if you’re in real pain now?

OneTC · 05/11/2021 14:44

Buy some OTC diclofenac

We're not allowed it anymore 😭

gamerchick · 05/11/2021 14:47

I wouldn't, but I'm always getting stupid injuries. I'd just strap it up and see how I go.

But it's obviously bothering you a lot, there's no harm in getting it checked out.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 05/11/2021 18:25

why do people in Britain still think they are a wimp for being checked out when in pain?
it's just such a stupid, self-deprecating attitude.

Whenever I hear I remember that woman a few years back who scratched her hand while gardening. all the signs were there that she should seek help but no, she chose the stiff upper lip route of self-healing.
The wound turned septic pretty sharpish and by the time she did ask for help it was too late.
She was dead within 5 days of that scratch.

Why risk something like that, ever?
There are no medals being given out for being in pain. not with injuries, not illnesses, not in childbirth.
not when it's a physical, an emotional or a mental issue.

Pain makes you weaker. it sucks out energy and it delays healing.
Pain is a warning sign that something is wrong and that you should do something.
It's not something you should embrace and suffer from.
I can not understand why people ever prefer to suffer instead of doing something to get better.
It's beyond me. But I'm not British so I'll probably never understand why applying "keep calm and carry on" as a blanket policy is a good thing. I view it as toxic positivity in this situation.
There's zero need to suffer OP

Reallybloodypainful · 05/11/2021 18:39

Zing I don't think it's self deprecating. Or maybe it is? I genuinely find it hard to know when to get medical assistance. On this occasion the pain seemed oddly out of sync with the fact I could wiggle fingers and figured no breaks. I thought I'd pass out last night yet this evening it is mainly fine. If I'd fallen or something and had the pain I would have acted on it.

I do get what you are saying though.

The spontaneous rupturing fingers sounds very odd!

OP posts:
Throckmorton · 05/11/2021 18:59

It is a minor injury - therefore go to Minor Injuries tomorrow. Don't suffer!

I've been hypermobile all my life. If I went to get checked out every time I had an injury, I'll never be away from the place. What would you suggest?

Have you been OP?

MushMonster · 05/11/2021 20:55

Tendonitis hurts, a lot!
You need to have it checked, though I think I would go to the GP. Out of hours would help you.

Wtf? Just go and see someone. You are not wasting anyone's time and you're in pain and feeling sick. You don't need to "toughen up" people that say silly shit like that are the reason why people end up not getting cancer symptoms checked out. Go to minor injuries, enjoy the feeling of feeling better quickly once they tell you what it is and how to treat.

100% agree with you. There is such a weird attitude on MN about this sort of thing it does my head in. Not even sure why you're asking OP - if someone came to you and said I'm in so much pain I feel sick and I cried what would you tell them to do??
