To think you shouldn’t be able to finance a Domino’s?

I’ve also seen the same company advertising finance for Asda pizzas, literally.

AIBU to think this sets a terrible precedent? I can easily see students etc quickly racking up the debt from the service. Rather than learning how to cook cheaply from scratch some will just use this.

Finance of course does have its place for many things such as cars and appliances. But for a fucking pizza? I can just about accept maybe financing for a Domino’s (for example your child’s birthday falls just before payday and they want pizza with their friends and you’re skint but don’t want them to miss out) but I find the option to finance a pizza from Asda especially tragic.

And no, it’s not me being a snob. I’m completely skint. That’s why it bothers me because I think people will end up racking up the debt quickly with it.

I will admit this made me laugh though. So true.

I don't know how schemes like this, or Klarna etc, work.

but is it much different that putting a pizza on a credit card? in my day student overdrafts were huge and if you got a few hours work a week, you seemed to be able to get a credit card!

Hwory · 04/11/2021 20:17

Yeah it's super sad

MaskingForIt · 04/11/2021 20:21

YABU. If people want pizza they should be able to have it. People need food to survive and they deserve a treat now and then.

BernieBaby · 04/11/2021 20:21

In some ways it seems better than putting crap on a credit card...at least there are a finite number of payments over a relatively short term. Better than racking up a credit card with the option to pay a minimum payment and rack up debt that takes years to pay off.

JCFJW · 04/11/2021 20:23

I think it’s a bit different to a credit card, at least the pay monthly ones. Paying a tiny amount weekly makes you feel like it’s pretty much free when you’re first ordering the food.

It’s all very crafty. The company is literally called ‘PayZilch.” You initially think “Well it’s £60 for a £10 pizza each for us all. I can manage £10 a week easily for 6 weeks.”

Then 2 weeks later you fancy another one and think “Yeah I can manage £20 a week fine I think.”

Then there’s interest as well.

And so it begins racking up quickly.

I’ve also got visions of conflict breaking out in student homes because X hasn’t yet provided Y with that £5.00 they owe to cover Y’s finance payment for this week for the pizza night they had 3 weeks ago.

Unbelievable, if you want a pizza and can't afford takeaway then just buy it from the supermarket and put it in the oven. Way cheaper. Getting into debt for a pizza is complete madness IMO.

Domino's is quite pricey. However people need to live within their means ffs. What's wrong with a supermarket pizza?

I think Klarna is bad too

JCFJW · 04/11/2021 20:29

@MaskingForIt.

I’m skint since having my baby. When I want a takeaway (and it’s rare I can even afford one) I go to somewhere cheaper than Domino’s. Or go looking for discount codes.

The ‘people need food to survive’ argument doesn’t stand up. Those who are genuinely struggling to feed themselves and their kids aren’t helped by being able to get £30 worth of pizzas on finance to cover one night.

This is awful and should be illegal.

JCFJW · 04/11/2021 20:35

Being able to finance an Asda pizza is a whole other sorry state of affairs.

Financing Domino’s and Asda are both things that shouldn’t exist, but they are bad for different reasons.

Person A one financing Domino’s for their dinner is a bit silly and shouldn’t have the option to do it because it’s madness.

Person B who is having to finance an Asda cheese pizza to split between their kids for dinner because they only have £5 left for the week...well that’s just fucking tragic and shouldn’t be a thing but it will be now

2 reasons why this may be useful

  1. Uncertain cash flows. Student finance coming in late, zero hour contracts
  2. Many students don’t have the money in their accounts to pay for an entire gathering’s worth of pizza. This is an easy way of getting the food first without sorting the money out. Especially when people are hungry, some people are broke etc etc

This is ridiculous. No-one should get into debt just because they want a pizza.
TractorAndHeadphones · 04/11/2021 20:38

Also students aren’t necessarily ordering pizza for dinner! This often happens when there are multiple people around and frankly it’s easier to order pizza.

Grown ass adults don’t gênerally have people dropping around Willy Nilly…

MaskingForIt · 04/11/2021 20:39

But they get into debt because they want a holiday. They could just go for a walk.

TuftyMarmoset · 04/11/2021 20:43

Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen tbh. Place your bets now on when the adverts will start… were you missold pizza financing?

JCFJW · 04/11/2021 20:50

Of course you’re going to get lone individuals using it for their dinner. Junk food like this is addictive

It’s terrible

But Klarna etc are on the clothing websites

You sign a credit agreement I think? I don't know. Is that what happened woth payday loans? I'm curious about the business model.

TuftyMarmoset · 04/11/2021 21:14

@DaisyNGO yes you do sign an agreement but people with payday loans were awarded compensation iirc after arguing that the firms didn’t do a proper affordability assessment. I don’t know the details of Zilch but it seems plausible that a similar thing could happen. Although I think the FCA is already looking at BNPL more closely after the payday lending stuff, where they put a load of price caps as well.

liveforsummer · 04/11/2021 21:14

If it wasn't for clear pay/Laybuy etc I'd not be able to buy clothes or shoes for dc. They are interest free and a huge help by spreading the cost. Klarna must be different as it's over less weeks yet I get refused every time. I'd not use it for pizza now but I guess if I was a hungry student I might

Hercisback · 04/11/2021 21:17

Klarna sort of works as a free trying on service and the other you only pay for what you keep.

Dominoes is another extreme. No one can argue they need a dominoes to survive. For the cost of one dominoes I could feed my kids for a week.

PivotPivotPivottt · 04/11/2021 21:19

I use Zilch. Not for pizzas but for bigger purchases such as new clothes for the kids or a decent Winter jacket for myself. I am on a low income paid weekly so it's easier for me to pay £10 a fortnight rather than £40 upfront. There's no interest either and you can only have 3 purchases going at the one time. I missed a repayment recently because I lost my bank card and was waiting on a replacement. They don't charge any late fees if you miss a payment the will suspend your account after 14 days with no payment though.

PivotPivotPivottt · 04/11/2021 21:22

And Zip and Clearpay are other ones which have came in useful especially near Christmas time. They do charge for late payments but if you contact them they usually are happy to rearrange payment date without a charge. I've had to do that twice recently with Zip (because of the bank card situation and they were great about it).

Crazycakelady17 · 04/11/2021 21:25

That’s shocking 😞
We had home made pizzas for tea ready bought Aldi flat naans pasata and all the left over veg in the fridge with some cheese hinges on top
You can buy £1 pizzas in ASDA

Teeheehee1579 · 04/11/2021 21:51

What is their business model? If they are not charging interest or late fees then how do they make their money?
